View Full Version : Bands that need to give it up?
Gunner Girl 7-21-00, 05:19 AM Okay, here's one I've stolen from somewhere else.
What bands do you think need to pack it in & call it a day?
My picks:
Sellouttica - Once a great band & a true innovator of music. Now I wouldn't walk across the street to piss on them if they were on fire!
KISS - Can you say "Show me the money"? Paul & Gene have more $$$ than they could ever spend in 50 lifetimes so why do they always have to make more? I know that merchandising has always been a big thing w/KISS but it's gotten way outta hand, IMO!
RATT - Without Stephen Pearcy, they're not RATT. Yes, Stephen is an asshole but you have to admit that when you hear that voice, you know who it is.
Van Halen - Unless Eddie gets his head out of his ass & lets Dave back in the band!
Axl Rose - Yes, I'm a GN'R freak but all that's left is Axl so I don't feel that he should call his solo project "Guns N' Roses". He's another one who needs to get his head out of his ass & wise up!
Tommy Lee - He's finally free of Pamela yet he still thinks he's a rapper. What a joke! He's an incredible drummer who needs to go home; to Motley Crue!
And last but not least (and I know I'm gonna get flamed for this one!) - Jon Bon Jovi
I know that alot of you liked the new BJ record but, IMO, it's awful. I think Jon needs to come back down to Earth w/the rest of us & get over himself. Yes, he is incredibly talented & gorgeous to look at, but he's lost touch w/his fans & seems much more interested in running w/the fashionable crowd. He's a good actor & I think he'll continue to do well in that area. But I just don't think his attitude flys well w/us normal Joes & his music is suffering for it.
Just my opinion......
------------------
Blaziegirl 7-21-00, 10:35 AM I've never heard of Sellouttica so no opinion there.
Kiss, yea it's probably all about money now But I still love these guys and would love to see them one last time /ubb/smilies/frown.gif
Ratt, I agree on that one.
Van Halen, don't really care because I'm a Sammy fan /ubb/smilies/smile.gif
GN'R, just isn't the same without the rest of them.
Tommy Lee, I agree with you on that one he should give it up he stinks.
Bon Jovi, OK I'm not touching this one because I don't want to get flamed *lol* but I haven't heard the new one yet.

donlav19 7-21-00, 11:34 AM I think you're CRAZY to think that Bon Jovi should give it up. Their new album is some of their best work in years. It's also some of the best current music out there. He can still write and sing awesome songs. Richie is about as good as they come on the axe. Out of all the bands that are classified as 80's bands, Bon Jovi is like the only one that can still please the old-school fans and grasp new ones with their modern sound. Jon is cocky, but I think that makes him a great performer.
I will totally agree with you about KISS and Tommy Lee. KISS are fun and all but let's be honest, their music is really not that good. Tommy, you blew it by leaving the Crue. And it looks like they are doing fine without you. I partially agree with Van Halen too. If they don't bring back Roth or Hagar, its time to give it up.
The other band I would say to give it up is Dokken. I saw them at the Poison show, and they just don't have it anymore. Their new stuff sucks and Don Dokken has NO stage presence.

Nikki_91 7-22-00, 04:50 PM I totally agree with you on all bands listed!
Kiss..the LAST TOUR, yeah right, heard that before!
Bon Jovi, okay, they were good in the 80's, sucked in the 90's (with the exception of Bad Medicine), what do they expect out of 2000?
Van Halen--please, retire already, you're no good without David Lee Roth. GIVE IT UP!!!
Warning to Bobby Brown...don't try to make any comebacks..just let it go, you're finished and you aren't doing Whitney any favors either!!!
------------------
Check ya later-I'm outta here!*Nikki*
IMO The Rolling Stones......They are way past their prime, all over 100 years old, and I never saw the big deal in them anyways. Flame away.

Yall are right. The Stones had some good songs, some I still like today. But, only a few. After almost 40 years that's the best they can do?! Please!!
I agree with the other bands as well. I saw Dokken in their "prime". They just weren't that good, not in concert anyway. The rest of 'em have huge egos and do need to come back to earth.
One last note, I have read on other sites that David and Sammie are not opposed to rejoining VH. Either one would be great, IMO. But, I don't think there can be any other.
------------------
OK my turn now! KISS - yes definately, getting old and should've stopped after Lick It Up. /ubb/smilies/icon20.gif
Rolling Stones - the same, never liked them much anyway! Keith looks like he's been around since the beginning of time. /ubb/smilies/laugh.gif
Michael Jackson - Let's just hope he never makes a comeback! He ain't no good anymore.
Tom Jones has been 'round for a while too! 'bout time he retired.

I agree with most of the choices so far, and here are a couple of my own:
Aerosmith: Haven't written anything good in a long time. All of their hits are written by other people, and all of them are ballads.
Bryan Adams: See Aerosmith...

Had a chance to see A Flock of Seagulls a couple of years ago. Now there's a band that *needs* to give it up.
I hear Ozzy still rocks, but at a geriatric pace.
Depeche Mode sucked the last time I saw them. Don't know if they're any better in concert since Dave Gahan gave up the smack.

Ok. I can agree with some of the bands I've seen listed in here. Kiss is getting old, Stones should have disappeared years ago, and Axl Rose is an attidude problem. The new Bon Jovi is a great album though. Reminds me of their earlier stuff. I have heard a song off the new Duran album and it's pretty good. Aerosmith is a gtear band in my eyes. Steven Tyler has an incredible voice. Just wish the music coming out now overall was better.
Jazzmyn
------------------
ok now, for once and for all, stop the KISS bashing. Lets look at the facts, they put together one of the biggest selling tours a few years back. Gene and Paul cut thier nuts off to make even more cash, by letting Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer go, and sticking with Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Bruce and Erice gave them a drive and kept the music fresh. I saw them on teh REVENGE tour and they were, quite simply AWESOME. Then I saw the first "last" Tour and they just plain sucked. I am a big HUGE fan, but ace and peter cannot keep up anymore, and instead of playing NEW songs, it is like seeing a TRIBUTE band with a bigger budget. Bring back Bruce and Eric and write some new, KILLER modern sounding tunes, and they will be great once more.
Van Halen, when edward ripped off the fans by using dave for the GH cd and then saying he was never back in the band, I lost what little respect I had for him. **** EDDIE VAN HALEN. I will never again spend a dime on him, his music, or a tour, even if he gets dave back, because I know, Just like Gene and Paul, they are only with the old guys for a pay day.
I saw Dokken in a club with George Lynch and they rocked. I saw them with the poison tour and they sucked. Why only 4 songs in a half hour? Did we really need a 13 minute version of ALONE AGAIN?

Tydestra 8-16-00, 12:28 PM This band in fairly new... but it should just stop while its ahead.
M.O.M. Tommy's "new" band. /ubb/smilies/00hmph.gif
They just suck... I mean SUCK/ubb/smilies/Exclamation.gif
Its this pathetic attempt at music.
Tommy should be sitting on his ass playing drums, not prancing about on guitars... its just not right. And if not, at least he could give the band's drummer some lessons...
Not to mention that they sound like any other band out there right now. This Limp Bizkit/Korn sound that everyone thinks its SO cool... well its NOT!
I do feel sorry for my generation, I mercifully was saved because of my nosy "What the hell is that?!?!" phase when I was Gene's tongue around 9...
But all these little kids that think that Korn and LB are all that... poor poor kids...
Korn is stupid for letting LB use this as a spring board... and LB is a mall band... who's 15 mins of fame are way overdue!

Iluvthe80s 5-27-01, 01:16 AM First of all, all these boy bands need to go.(Example: Backstreet Boys)
All the Britney Spears and her sound alikes!
All this so called New Metal (Example:Limp Bizkit)
If all of this would disappear, I would be happy!
Greenway88 4-11-02, 01:00 PM This thread cracked me up, time to ressurect it.
Bon Jovi, KISS and The Stones do need to hang it up.
One of the last concerts I went to was Dead Or Alive, which was really just the lead singer, Peter Burns I think. That guy doesn't need a 'Brand New Lover', he needs a brand new life, what a loser. Hang it up NOW!
Another group that maybe should hang it up is the Go-Go's.
I've never understood the appeal of either The Rolling Stones or KISS. Both bands are so old and ugly.
scott28883 4-11-02, 03:12 PM OK, here is my measly 2 cents. I think the Rollin Bones need stop right now. They do have good music, but I was really never a fan but face it guys, time to stop before you break a hip on stage.
That crack-whore wannabe-Britney Spears needs to learn how to sing before she goes on tour
limp bizkit, what kind of music is that? All Fred Durst is a tattoo artist who is a hollywood celebrity wannabee
Aerosmith. Yes they are good live but there new music lately doesnt impress at all. Sounds all the same to me.
Eric Clapton. Why even tour if he said that he doesnt enjoy it anymore. I dont think I would want too see him in concert after I heard him say that. What kind of show would he put on if he is bored?
I'd have to say, the Rolling Stones and Motley Crue (Sorry Foxxy. :( )
The Monkees. Guys, GIVE IT UP!! :hammer:
(To the tune of The Monkees Theme)

LOL!
The Monkees are definitely the old generation now, but I still like them :D
Just to piss Flix off, even though he's not around at the moment, I'm gonna go for Depeche Mode! Give it up guys! hehehe.
And Michael Jackson should definitely give it up, because if he doesn't, one day his nose is gonna fall off on national television and then he'll never live that down!
My Obsession 4-11-02, 07:42 PM Everyone is probably disagree with me here, but, I think irish band U2 need to give it up. Their music has become very boring - too much of a degree of sameness (music for music's sake?)
Their music simply isn't as catchy as what they produced in the 80s. Then again, which band actually got better with time? Hardly any.
idexpectnoless 4-11-02, 09:13 PM Foreigner - (I'm a huge fan - but Lou Gramm has lost his voice and no one can find it.) I saw them in concert last year and I was embarassed for them. Lou can't even come close to hitting any of the high notes and worse he dosent even try. I'm glad that I have all of their stuff when they were awesome.
Greenway88 4-12-02, 08:59 AM My Obsession: U2 is just about there. I don't think they should pack it in just yet.
idexpectnoless: Yes, Foreigner needs to go, all though I thought they hung it up a long time ago.
I thought of another one, Styx.
Christine 4-12-02, 01:44 PM I think that all nu-metal groups need to GIVE IT UP. You're absolutely horrible and a disgrace to real metal and real rock 'n roll. :yucky:
Another band that definitely needs to give it up is Metallica. Please, put me out of my misery. :yucky: :p

I couldn't agree more, them and all that rap crap. :yucky:
outofplacechild 4-12-02, 02:15 PM -The Beach Boys. Hey, when the only Wilsons in your band are the ones who helped to sing "Hold On" and "Release Me", then maybe...just possibly, you should think of packing it in. They should've said "No No No" and "We've Got To Go Go Go" before they did "Kokomo". I'll pass on this, thanks very much.
-Eminem, and not for reasons you might think...I say he should give it up because his shtick is old. Seriously, reading has proved to me that faux-homophobia and possibly real misogynism go back further than when he first hit it big. Homophobia and misogynism had been done already by people like Geto Boyz, 2 Live Crew and N.W.A. Hey, Eminem, when you have something genuine to say, crawl out from under your rock. Shock without a point equals nothing. Jesus, I can't believe I expelled so much
energy on Eminem these past few years. Maybe if people ignore him (like I started doing last year), he'll get the message. I don't give a damn about this wanker anymore.
-Aerosmith. These 9 words spelled out their end: "Performance with N'SYNC at the 2001 Super Bowl". The second Steven caterwauled the words "It's Gonna Be Me", I knew that Aerosmith reached a point of no return.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

To a certain degree, I have to admit that DM maybe wasnīt that fortunated with their last release...and with all the rumours currently flying, the end of DM seems not to be entirely impossible.
Speaking of Synthpop...if the next releases of Camouflage and Alphaville are as weak as their last ones, they should also call it a day - for good. For me, itīs sad to see them ruining their reputation as being the most successful German Synthpop bands of the 80s.
:hammer:
I say Diana Ross needs to give it up too. She's too full of herself, and this was made evident by the ticket prices for her failed tour in 2000. The tour had to be cancelled in its entirety due to lack of ticket sales.
Barbra Streisand needs to give it up too. She whines too damn much!
Seeing that I'm only 23 years old, I can run down a list of "artists" or bands that need to give it up before Top 40 radio becomes a COMPLETE cesspool (as opposed to a partial cesspool that happens to be filling fast):
- Limp Bizkit (I should probably mention that one of the DJ's on the local modern rock station in Atlanta has forbidden anyone to request a song from Limp Bizkit on his show.)
- Ja Rule (Sing with me now, in a raspy, tone-deaf voice: "What would I be without you!!!! I only think about you!!!! I know you're tired of bein' lonely!!!! So baby girl, put it on me!!!!")
- Backstreet Boys (I know that some of you are fans, but I'm predicting that alcohol abuse within the ranks marked the beginning of the end for them.)
- Britney Spears (You're a tramp! You sold out your target audience of teenage girls when you tried to broaden your appeal to include teenage boys. Teenage boys today are perverts, and you're sending the teenage girls --- your most loyal demographic --- the wrong message by showing them that it's OK to dress like a $2 whore to impress the perverted teenage boys --- and that it's OK to be a...SLAAAAAAAVE...for them!)
- QB's Finest (If this group is Queensbridge's finest, then I don't want anyone from Queensbridge making any more music. "Oochie Wally" has to be the single most perverted, misogynistic, shameless, and disgusting piece of music I have ever heard. These guys make the High Honor Roll for being told to give up after only one song.)
- Jennifer Lopez (Just give Ja Rule a blowjob and get it over with.)
- Creed (Scott Stapp's singing voice sounds like Eddie Vedder meets Gavin Rossdale --- and nothing like his speaking voice. These guys are nothing but fourth-generation grunge hand-me-downs, and they're beginning to take themselves way too seriously for my liking. Furthermore, their songs now spend a horrifically long time on the charts. "Higher" spent 57 weeks on the Hot 100, and "With Arms Wide Open" spent 47 weeks. Those two songs together have an average chart-life span of 52 weeks --- one year. I still have yet to listen to "My Sacrifice" the whole way through for the first time. Remember how back in the '80s, most songs spent no more than 30 weeks on the charts? And remember how those that did spend more than 30 weeks on the charts never saw their 40th week [with the lone exception of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love"]? Why can't we go back to that?)
- Lifehouse (Can I go for one whole day without hearing "Hanging By A Moment"? You guys "hung by your moment" for exactly 54 weeks on the Hot 100 --- way too long! Fifty-four weeks, 15 minutes, same difference.)
- Blink 182 (Pop and punk never went together. Furthermore, the lead vocalist for some of their songs sounds like a whiny little brat.)
- Trick Daddy (We get it now. You're a thug! Thank you for taking every opportunity possible to remind us of this, whether it be by album names such as www.thug.com, The Book Of Thugs; Chapter AK, Verse 47, and Thugs 'R' Us, or by song names, such as "I'm A Thug." He's awfully insecure for a straight-up thug!)
- Anyone signed to Cash Money Records (These are the idiots who brought us "Back That Azz Up," invented the incredibly stupid slang term "bling bling" [referring to the way their gaudy, expensive jewelry twinkles in light], decided that their own teeth would make for a nifty fashion accessory by having them plated in gold or platinum, or even studded with diamonds [the good news is, one slug in the mouth for any of these jokers would mean they'd immediately swallow or spit out about $25,000], and who figured that the best wheels on a car are 20" in diameter or larger. Most of these guys sound illiterate too.)
Just breaking today's music down for you guys. I still think there are a lot of good and pleasant songs made today, but I also believe that within the past three years, a steadily-increasing amount of new music has been nothing but crap, as my above list shows.
:hammer:

Oh, I forgot to add Eminem to that list. This is the analogy I've made: Dr. Dre is Dr. Frankenstein, and Eminem is the monster the doctor created. Eminem is nothing more than a belligerent 16-year-old trapped in the body of a 28-year-old. I also believe he has permanently killed off what little chance white rappers had to succeed after Vanilla Ice.
Nice post DBR96. Gave me a few chuckles too :) Interesting to hear about Diana Ross and her high ticket prices. Definitely full of herself!
Thanks for your take on some of todays artists. Some good points made. :)
