View Full Version : Most underrated band/musician of the 80's?
Gunner Girl 6-20-00, 01:20 AM In your opinion, who is the most underrated band or musican from the 80's?
I think it has to be either Poison or Bon Jovi. Both bands were incredibly important during the 80's. Even if you hate both bands, you cannot deny their influence on that decade.
People have always gotten too caught-up in Poison's glam look & party image Some people forget that they made great music!
Bon Jovi brought melody & harmony to metal. They weren't the heaviest band of the 80's but they were definitely one of the first big mainstream acts of the 80's.
Your opinions?

Blaziegirl 6-20-00, 07:32 AM I agree, Cinderella is another band that was underrated! All everyone cared about was their fashion since not the great music they made. Looking good was just the icing on the cake http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Tydestra 6-20-00, 03:02 PM Okay, let me think... Bon Jovi got at least some respect... so I say POISON Everybody hated them... everyboy! The critics, a lot of the other bands...
For a musicain... I'll say Mick Mars.. The Crue isn't the Crue without him, but he has never truly gotten respect!

donlav19 6-20-00, 04:38 PM I would say the 2 most underrated bands were and still are Cinderella and Warrant. Both bands have excellent song writing, especially as they matured. Just listen to Heartbreak Station by Cinderella or Dog Eat Dog by Warrant. Cinderella had a real Led Zepplin feel to them by that album. They could be heavy or mellow. For Warrant, I still believe nobody writes a better ballad than Jani Lane. Heaven and I Saw Red are obvious favorites but listen to Blind Faith on Cherry Pie and Sad Theresa or Let it Rain on Dog Eat Dog. These are some serious songs.
As for most underrated musician I would say David Bryan of Bon Jovi. He is an excellent musician and is currently working on writing music for broadway and soundtracks. He just doesn't get the credit because he is a keyboardist.

Bronski Beat. Great stuff, not much notice because of their, ummmm..., preferences. Good stuff. Pet Shop Boys as well, though they got more recognition. I would also say that Shriekback didn't get *near* the accolades they deserved.

Let's see....Poison, Bon Jovi, Warrant....Oh wait you asked underrated not overrated. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/redface.gif
As for underrated......Racer X, Great White, Tesla.
I agree Tydestra...Mick is a very underated guitar player.

Gunner Girl 6-24-00, 02:43 PM I totally agree about Mick Mars. He is incredible!!
Others that are underrated:
Lita Ford - I feel that she would have sold alot more album if she was a guy. Because of her gender, some people didn't take her seriously & missed out on some great music.
Ozzy Osbourne - One of the greatest musicians of all time. It just seems to me that outside of the metal scene, alot of people don't even give Ozzy a chance.
Blackie Lawless - Another fab musician that doesn't get the respect he deserves.
Love to all!!

I think Anthrax were pretty underrated! Not only were (ARE!) these guys great musicians, but they also have a great sense of humour. (major turn on for me) Joey Belladonna had the best voice in metal and Among the Living is one of the best metal albums of the 80's. Right up there with Master of Puppets! I loved this band right up until they dropped Joey from the band. Whoever the hell they hired to replace him just never had the same impact for me. (and NO, it has nothing to do with Joey being an Upstate NY boy! I am not bias! Honest!)

AKA Rain Taylor
*Kicks himself in the ass* I feel like a complete idiot....how could I forget to mention my boys. I totally agree with you Raine http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif....John Bush is NOT the one who should be singing for Anthrax....Joey Belladonna is the man!

Joey Belladonna is the man!
Hell yes, he is! The man had the most sincere voice in metal. I totally dig this guy! My MOTHER turned me on to Anthrax in the 80's! She loved Joey's voice. Of course, my mother was totally into Motorhead and Accept as well. Leave it to the Mother of Rain to run around the house singing "balls to the wall, man..."

That is one cool mother. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif I had a hard time getting my mother to listen to "Beth". Does she have any younger sisters? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/wink.gif

Wild Flower 7-22-00, 06:26 AM Lillian Axe and Badlands were both KILLER bands that were severely underrated...so much so that it's almost criminal!

Got to be the master of shock rock and glam Alice Cooper! He was cited as an influnece by most of the 80's bands. In fact did you know Jon Bon Jovi is an Alice fan and even wrote a song for ALice but it didn't make the final cut, but did background vocals on the song "Trash?" Alice not only influnced most of the acts but made some great 80's albums as well. When you talk about glam and theatrical rock it all started with Alice, and he still is rocking to this day!

Iluvthe80s 5-27-01, 02:28 AM One of the most underrated musicians I can think of would be Andy Taylor. In 1987, his solo album "Thunder" came out and literally bombed. It has always been one of my Top 10 80's albums. His guitar work on it is great! He also did some songs for the "American Anthem" soundtrack and one for the "Tequila Sunrise" soundtrack.
KinKyFae 5-30-01, 07:15 PM mmm ok...
I loved the Quireboys...yeah a few chart hits sure, but they died too soon.. I was in love with Spike's voice, and him..lol I was 16 and had a Qboys bday cake..with blue and black icing..and a real carnation made out of icing...awww..
who else, Doro! MAN YEAH...she is amazing...really beautiful, amazing voice and great look that I totally copied...when I had a figure 4 spandex...sigh~
Love,
KinK xx
ImSoooSure 6-01-01, 05:09 AM I would have to say Alphaville. They sang "Forever Young" (not the Rod Stewart version) Great band but next to impossible to get them played on the radio.
greeneyesjackson 6-05-01, 10:28 PM Yes I agree, Poison was totally dogged by (so called critics) but they were Awesome and still kicking!!! I would also like to say that Stryper was VERY underrated and were just as awsome!!!!
Poison PJ 6-06-01, 04:37 PM Lets See...
Dokken, Kix, Hurricane, Tuff, Bulletboys, Winger, Shark Island, MSG, Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, Kick Axe, & Danger Danger
Jefferson Starship 9-02-03, 11:37 AM I agree with all of you, Cinderella is soo underrated and again nowadays!! It's easily one of the best of the 80s I've ever heard!!
