Memorable events..we've had disasters, scandals, benefits, you name it.
Events I remember of the 80's..
1-The wall came tumblin' down..That was a newsworthy event I thought might never happen, until it did.

2-The 80's..decade of benefits. We had Comic Relief, USA FOR AFRICA, and Live Aid..etc.

3-Scandals, scandals, scandals. Jim Baker and Tammy Faye, Iran-Contra scandal, Imelda Marcos and all those damn shoes!

When Ronald Reagan finally acknowledged the existence of A.I.D.S.!

Of course, lots of people had already lost their lives to the disease by then. Being in smal-town hell all my life, that's the first time that I can remember hearing about the disease.

I think that if the government had stepped in earlier, maybe it wouldn't have become so widespread. But because it started in the gay community & next spread to I.V. drug users, they did nothing. They allowed people to suffer because they didn't like their lifestyle & that's sad.

The space shuttle explosion was the most vivid memory I have of a news event in the 80's. I remember walking into 'Social Studies' and being almost paralyzed by the scene on TV.

Also when President Reagan was almost assasinated. James Brady took the worst of the attack and all the gun control legislation took on his name after that attack.

Lots of memorable things went on in the 80s. Aside from the events already mentioned, one of the biggest events that I remember was the Live Aid concert for world hunger in 1985. That was such an awesome day and I felt special just to be able to watch it on MTV, as it was broadcast live from Philadelphia and London. The world seemed to be more connected on a human scale back then...

Whew! Alot of memories...but distinctly I remember:

ASSINATION ATTEMPT ON RONALD REAGAN
HOSTAGES BEING RELEASED
CHALLENGER EXPLOSION
FARM AID
LIVE AID
WE ARE THE WORLD (USA FOR AFRICA)
MICHAEL JACKSON'S HAIR CATCHING FIRE
THE LAUNCH OF MTV
PRINCE CHARLES & LADY DIANA
THE FINAL EPISODE OF MASH

The list could go on but these are just off the top of my head.

Wasn't the song "That's What Friends are For" released to recognize HIV and AIDS? ( Just like with "We are the World" for the Aid to Africa.) I thought some of the proceeds went to help with AIDS research.

I think you're correct there Angela.

I think the discovery of HIV and AIDS was the biggest event in the 80's. It affected so many lives in so many continents and to this day there is no cure! I donate my help to the Coastal Bend Aids Foundation, at times, I wish I could do more, but I really take the cases to heart and it can really depress you. God bless everyone in the world suffering with this dreaded disease.

Two events that stuck out in my mind were the Russians shooting down Flight 007, and the May 31, 1985 tornado outbreak in Pennsylvania and Ohio. I was living in Pittsburgh at the time, and my father's best friend from the University of Pittsburgh was on Flight 007. Also, the tornado outbreak ended up killing 90 people in Pennsylvania, and included 36 different confirmed tornado touchdowns --- including one F5 which struck three towns about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh. I remember seeing the damage on TV and in the newspaper. To this day it remains the 3rd-costliest tornado outbreak in the U.S., behind only the super outbreak of April 1974, and the "billion-dollar tornado" that struck suburban Okalhoma City in 1999.

A memorable event was when Baby Jessica got trapped in a well here in Texas. Someone mentioned on the radio recently that she is like 16 or 17 now! Hard to believe, huh?

Also, when the PMRC changed the music industry with their "Parental Advisory" stickers. I still do not like Tipper Gore and her little group to this day! :hammer:

I was a TV kind of kid, so one event that was memorable to me was the episode of "Family Ties" called "A, My Name Is Alex" where his friend died in a car accident. I thought that it was such a sad episode.

You're not actually saying that Reagan was responsible for the spread of AIDS are you?
