I always loved "Goodbye to You!" by Scandal.

When I was itching towards the phone to call I'd put this on and it would strengthen my resolve :)

"Missing You" by John Waite, absolutely. Still one of my favorite songs. I didn't start dating until the early 90s, (I turned 14 in 1989) but I've loved and understood that song since I first heard it in grammar school.

Was it my personality that brought me to songs of lost love, or the songs that shaped me into the Queen of Angst? The world may never know... hehehe.

Depends on my mood and how it breaks up...

If Iīm sad...
DEINE LAKAIEN - Away
MESH - You Didnīt Want Me
(Paul) KING - Alone Without You
and a thousand other songs...

And if Iīm feeling angry...
TYPE O NEGATIVE - Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity
(Thatīs the SLOW, DEEP AND HARD version...on THE ORIGINS..., they called it by name - I Know Youīre F**king Someone Else).

This song is comprising it best how it feels when you discover that the woman you pretend to love is cheating on you - and I know such feelings too well.

Come Back and Stay by Paul Young maybe?

Mentioned it before in another post but one of the best has to be I Want You by Elvis Costello. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/bigcry.gif

If I'm doing the breaking it was "You Ain't Worth the Salt in my Tears" (don't remember the artist at the moment).

If I'm being broken it was "You Don't Want Me Anymore" by Steel Breeze.

How about "What's It To Ya?" by Robbie Neville (sp?)? I like upbeat, up yours type breakup songs. LOL The sad ones are good the first day, but then you need to pick yourself up and get back on your feet. That is not to say you shouldn't still hurt, just that you should realize that the bum doesn't know what he/she is losing! "Watch Me" by Lorrie Morgan (probably only djdaffy will know these), is my absolute fave upbeat goodbye song. And "Goodbye Says It All" by ? (temporary brain fart), is a good one.

ValJ

Almost forgot!! "Little Goodbyes" is hilarious, but the group isn't the greatest (SheDaisy).
Sample:
Took the hourglass, left the sand
Now you got time on your hands,
Took the statue from the den,
Your funny little Buddha man.
Change my voice on the machine
Or there'll be little goodbyes with every ring.
Left the pictures, took the frames
I got the umbrella, here comes the rain ....

There's also a part that goes: Loaded up the TV in the back of my car, Have fun watchin' the VCR. LOL

EDIT:Shoot....I forgot, sorry, this wasn't an 80s song.

Hey now! I listen to country, a lot when those 2 songs were popular.

"Goodbye Says It All" was by Blackhawk (with Van Stephenson of "Modern Day Delilah" fame. And sadly died in April.)

There is NO doubt that I know who Lorrie Morgan is.

wait. aren't these supposed to be 'break-up' songs?
lol
those are too romantic for that sort of thing. those are "we can't live apart" songs.
you're just too sweet. :)

how about,
"this is the sign of the times,
peace of mind to come.
this is the sign of the times,
time to be alone."

"When you said goodbye
I was trying to hide what I felt inside
Until it passed me by
You said you'd return
You said that you'd be mine till the end of time
Well don't wait any longer
...
Come back and stay for good this time."

To me, it sounds like she left. :)

oh, ok.

for some reason, I was thinking of 'break-up songs' as in a mutual feeling break-up. lol. hopefully, everyone's fortunate enough for those kind.

Wow. MDC. Thanks for mentioning that song. That's another one of those 1989 songs that played on the radio a lot when I got my first full-time job. How I would love to put together a sound track like that.

Anyways... How about "Nobody's Fool" by Cinderella?

For me there was only ONE true breakup song for the 80's. "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake. The lyrics just said it all.

Here I go again on my own
goin' down the only road I've ever known.
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone.
An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time.

Oh boy, I almost forgot the immortal "One More Minute" by Weird Al. I knew I was in bad shape when I actually identified with this song, with no trace of irony or sarcasm... heh!

I'd rather rip my heart right out of my ribcage with my bare hands and throw it on the floor and stomp on it till I die..... than spend one more minute with you!

I vote for "At This Moment" by Billy Vera and The Beaters. I understood this song perfectly when a friend ditched me over a mistake I had nothing to do with. I wrote her a letter on Sunday in a last-ditch effort to get her to be my friend again. I hope it works! :(

Sincerely,

And was "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" by Meatloaf late 70s or early 80s?

PJ picked a good one with "Goodbye" by Nightranger! :)

Since someone mentioned country songs, one of my all-time favorite break-up tunes is Ray Steven's "Get Your Tongue Outa My Mouth, 'Cause I'm Kissing You Goodbye" LOL! :D

Hahaha, good one Nolanbuc. It reminds me of "I've got a tear in my ear from lying on my back crying over you."
I think my fav. country break up song is "Baby's gotten good at goodbye" from George Strait. Nobody does breakup songs like country musicians.

"I'm looking for a new love baby". The singers name is on the tip of my tongue, but I just cant get it to come out of my mouth.
It felt good to sing it at the top of my lungs at the time, but I wished I could have said I felt like actually looking for a new love. Not like the guy, who at the time found a new love before breaking up with me, would have even cared if I had found somebody new.

I can't believe no one mentioned this one!

If You Leave - OMD

This song breaks my heart-

"If you leave, don't leave now
Please don't take my heart away
Promise me just one more night
Then we'll go our separate ways
With hours left time on our sides
Now it's fading fast
Every second every moment
We've got to--we've gotta make it last

I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends someday "

Speaking of Synthpop...'Let Me Go' by Heaven 17 is also a good example for a breaking up song.

At least I found myself listening to this song quite often when a relationship went down the drain again. ;)

When ever I break up with someone, I always listen to
"with or without you" by U2.
It usually says it all...
" I can't live, with or without you"

also i like the song
"trying to get over you" by Vince Gill.

it's a good song

You are right though. That is a heart wrenching break up song.

THAT SONG ALWAYS MAKES ME SAD..

I CAN'T LIVE... IF LIVING IS WITHOUT YOU. I CAN'T LIVE.. I CAN'T GIVE ANYMORE..

the first time I heard the song in "Con-Air", at the end, I thought that's the best break-up song. (only if you don't want to.lol)
"How do I live without you?
I want to know.
how do I breathe without you
if you ever go..."

Good song pick Vilji! Do you like the Leann Rimes or Tirsha Yearwood version better? I believe Trisha did the one in Con-air.

When I saw the movie, Trisha's version fit the character really well.

But then when I heard LeAnn's version, I have to admit her voice was much stronger.

How about Don't Dream (It's Over) by Crowded House? It has been used in a couple of tv series shows (one of them Beverly Hills 90210, the other possibly Party of Five). A very good song.

Hmm...I don't tend to want to remember the break-ups but... (if memory serves me right)

All At Once ~ Whitney Houston
Against All Odds ~ Phil Collins

But then any slow/sentimental song can become a break-up song because when you're down you just soak it all up and feel immensely sorry for yourself :)

Trisha Yearwood without a doubt has more soul and depth in her voice. Leanne Rimes just rips off everyone else's hits. She can sing Blue almost as good as Patsy though but she needs some years under her belt to give some of these love songs meaning.

It is funny you say that, that is the reason I heard they didn't use it in the movie.

For me, I don't think about thinks like how old a singer is. Or whether or not they are old enough to know what they are singing about. If I like a song, that's all it takes. :)
