View Full Version : Best 80s Remakes
There are so many! Here are some off the top of my head. They aren't necessarily my favorite, in fact I never liked the Mariah Carey remake (see below). There are just some songs that should never be touched (like Open Arms) because they are classics. Anyway, which are your favorite or worst?
Funky Town - Pseudo Echo (remember them?!)
Funky Town - Lipps Inc. (1979/1980)
In My Dreams - The Party (1991)
In My Dreams - Dokken
How Soon Is Now - Love Spit Love
How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
Open Arms - Mariah Carey
Open Arms - Journey
Bizarre Love Triangle - Frente!
Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order

lazy boy 5-31-01, 11:14 PM My fave' would have to be Wuthering Heights by Pat Benatar, originally by, ah, can't remember.
Let's see, there must be another one my brain can come up with...nope, too much to ask I guess
By ahh... Kate Bush perhaps?
And since you brought up Pat Benatar, I'll add her remake of "You Better Run" originally done by The Young Rascals in the 60's. Also, "Helter Skelter" originally done by the Beatles.

Roemello 6-01-01, 01:00 AM How about, "Keep Me Hangin' On" by Kim Wilde Don't remember the original artists...mind always draws a blank with the oldies The Supremes maybe?
djdaffy1227 6-01-01, 09:53 PM It was the Supremes. Are we talking remade songs in the 80's or of the 80's.
I liked "That's life" by David Lee Roth. I really liked the Party's version of "In my dreams" although my friends thought otherwise.

Cool! Many great ones. I guess 80s remake can qualify as an 80s band/artist who remakes another song from any decade or any band/artist from the 90s to present day that remakes an 80's song. Sheree the original Crimson & Clover is by Tommy James & The Shondells which had some other songs covered in the 80s - Mony Mony by Billy Idol & I Think We're Alone Now by Tiffany. Yikes! I had a crush on her. I love the responses. Keep 'em coming :-)

N'sync's first album had a remake of Christopher Cross' song "Sail Away" on it.
My daughter has the CD, that's how I know. You didn't think I owned it, did you? LOL
My personal faves:
Gimme Shelter (Sisters of Mercy). Unique take on the Stones' original.
That's the Way (I like it) by Dead or Alive was a massive dance hit in the 80s. Excellent verion (original KC & the Sunshine Band).
Ziggy Stardust by Bauhaus RRRRRROOOOOCKED (David Bowie original).
Let's not forget Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go by Soft Cell. That was a cover also. (Can't remember who did Tainted Love but Where Did Our Love Go was the Supremes methinks).
Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles - anyone else like the Bangles? (Simon & Garfunkel original).

That's so cool that someone here likes "sister's of mercy" (even their remakes.) And Peter Murphy's voice was perfect,I thought, for the David Bowie song. I liked the Bangles version of 'Hazy Shade..' better than the original. I love them. I just heard their song "If she knew what she wants.." "In your room" and "Eternal Flame" --some of their best I think.
Stop the madness! You had mentioned Elizabeth Frasier, too. just stop it! my head hurts.

dirt_worshipper 6-30-01, 07:32 PM yeah, ziggy stardust is a great song....one remake that pissed me off was Every Breath You Take -The Police.....You know how Puff Daddy (i hate him, haven't heard one original song by him) remade it into I'll be missing you. One funny thing though is at the Mtv video awards (i think it was) puff daddy was singing his version....and they had sting come out to sing too......when puff daddy had come out the first time, nobody really cheered....but when sting came out to sing part of it.....the whole audience went wild!!! That was great. -Sarah >^._.^<
Roemello 6-30-01, 07:35 PM I said it before and I'll say it again...if it weren't for 80s music, Puffy wouldn't have a career All the background music he uses came from the 80s....at least for just about all of his "hits" anyway
That's "P. Diddy" to you, Roem!! Pee, Didhe? What a doofus....I will now be known as "P. P. Puleeze"!! LOL You figure out what that adds up to!!! LOL I do amuse me.

Poison PJ 7-01-01, 12:22 AM and I forgot W.A.S.P.'s Cover Of The Real Me
Can't believe I didn't think of this one before. How about the entire album Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes? A marvellous voice and a full record of Leonard Cohen covers.
mmmm. Time for dreams. :D
wavemaster 8-20-01, 02:46 PM Okay...let´s see what I have found...
Sisters Of Mercy "Jolene" - they have perfomed it only live as far as I know...wasn´t that originally by Dolly Parton?
The Mission "Like A Hurricane" - the counterpart to the Sisters, covered a Neil Young track
Depeche Mode "Route 66" - the Beatmasters Mix is featuring a section of "Behind The Wheel" (it´s actually the B-side), but they kept it quite close to the original (Bobby Troup Jr. ?)
M.L.Gore "Counterfeit E.P." - a whole CD with coverversions performed by a member of the above mentioned group
Funker Vogt "You Can Win If You Want" - if you hated the original, you will love this... :D
Type O Negative "Cinnamon Girl" - really good cover of another Neil Young track, the "Depressed Mode"-mix is actually sounding like a virtually unknown band I´ve mentioned above had done it...
Treponem Pal "Funky Town" - boy, those Frogs have really destroyed this track... ;)
Paradise Lost "Walk Away" - see, the Sisters have also been covered...
Klute "The Furor" - eat this, bloody AC/DC fans... :D
The Clash "I Fought The Law" - I really like this version better than the original (Bobby Fuller ?)
I think I better stop here now...for a while :D

Absolutely right Wavey. I've heard it played on bootlegs but it's not on any official recordings that I've seen. Yes it was a Dolly Parton song. :D
Last time I saw them live they covered Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. Wasn't bad really.

Cool, I'm going to have to check that out.
I love Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal." (Michael Jackson) The video is a kicker also, I just watched it on mtv.com. :) (It's impossible to actually see an *entire* video on television anymore!)
Iluvthe80s 8-20-01, 11:11 PM I think this one might be 1990, but it is still good. Faster Pussycat's version of the Carly Simon song "You're So Vain".
xistenza 8-21-01, 12:58 AM here are a few good cover...
Brave New World - Shake the Disease (depeche mode)
Meat Beat Manifesto - Everything Counts (depech mode)
Bi-God 20 - Like A Prayer (madonna)
Laibach - Final Countdown (europe)
Ikon - Fall Apart (Death in June)
Siouxsie & the Banshees - The Passenger (Iggy Pop pre-80s 1977, i think)
Elastic Band - Running up that Hill (Kate Bush)
Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind (Willie Nelson, i think)

Iggy Pop, Lust for Life released 1977.
Siouxsie & the Banshees, Through the Looking Glass released 1987.
I'd forgotten about Through the Looking Glass. A whole album of covers. Some great ones on there. "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us". I used to love Sparks when I was a little Bogie. The Doors' "You're Lost Little Girl" and Dylan's "This Wheel's On Fire" were pretty good too.

Oh, I completely forgot about Bigod 20. I love them. :) That "Bog" song cracks me up.
On the theme of current bands, Sugar Ray also has a fun version of "Abracadabra" (Hall & Oates) on 14:59. Sugar Ray is one of my guilty pleasures...

Bigod 20 were among the rare projects who had covered themselves...they had rerecorded/remixed "Carpe Diem" for a CDS which was released originally by Umo Detic, featuring basically the same members (Talla2XLC / Jallokin).
Another remakes I found (aah, I just love talking music... :D )
Depeche Mode "Sonata No.14 in C#m 'Moonlight Sonata' " - okay, it´s not from the 80s but a bit earlier...it was written by Beethoven in 1801. Nonetheless, an interesting track.
Fine Young Cannibals "Suspicious Love" - yep, a track from the King, but with much more drive...the German synthpop band Camouflage did a song with the same name, but it has nothing to do with the classic version.
Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind" - another track originally performed by Elvis. How would Elvis sound today, given the technologies? ;)
KonKan "I Beg Your Pardon" - I think the original was performed back in the 60s by Lynn Anderson, but I´m not sure...
BTW..."Tainted Love" was written by Ed Cobb and released under 'Al Cobb' somewhere during the 60s.

I agree. A great album. I like the idea of a single band releasing a "Covers" album, as opposed to the "Tribute to so-and-so" albums where a bunch of different bands cover one artist. It's more interesting to see what our favorite artists are inspired by.
I agree Xis. However, there is one Tribute album that you shouldn't be without. Can you guess which one? Here's the track listing:
1. The House of Love: Who by fire
2. Ian McCulloch: Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye
3. Pixies: I can’t forget
4. That Petrol Emotions: Stories of the street
5. The Lilac Time: Bird on the wire
6. Geoffrey Oryema: Suzanne
7. James: So long Marianne
8. Jean-Louis Murat: Avalanche IV
9. David McComb & Adam Peters: Don’t go home with your hard-on
10. R.E.M.: First we take Manhattan
11. Lloyd Cole: Chelsea hotel
12. Robert Foster: Tower of song
13. Peter Astor: Take this longing
14. Dead Famous People: True love leaves no traces
15. Bill Pritchard: I’m your man
16. Fatima Mansions: A singer must die
17. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Tower of song
18. John Cale: Hallelujah
:D
xistenza 8-27-01, 04:27 AM Leonard Cohen!!!
I knew it right away. I should really get off my butt and buy some Cohen of mine own. I've been relying on the kindness of friends for it. Lazy xis needs to get her ass to the record store, once again. hehe.
How are the covers? I bet the Cave one is great.
Most of them are terrific. NC's version of Tower of Song is, how to put it?, unique. Robert Foster's version is good too.
The real stand-out's for me are James' version of So Long, Marianne and John Cale's version of Hallelujah.
They're all great though. :)

I love his stuff! And let me let you guys in on a little secret..SO DO THE LADIES!!!Under "Top 10 Songs to Do It To" Rolling Stone magazine once voted Roxy Music's "Avalon" album! Not just one song, the entire album! I agree! I give 2 thumbs and 1 penis up!

Cool Breeze
"There can't be a winner..If there isn't a river!"
Madonna did a cover of the 1970's Rose Royce classic "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". It appeared on her 'Like A Virgin' album 1984.
Both, The Belle Starrs and Cyndi Lauper did a cover of "Iko Iko". It appeared on Cyndi Laupers 1986 album 'True Colors'.
Laura Brannigan did a cover of the Donna Summer disco sensation, "Dim All The Lights".
COOL BREEZE 2-18-02, 05:51 PM JUSTINE BATEMAN OF FAMILY TIES ALSO DID "IKO IKO" ON THE "SATISFACTION" SOUNDTRACK...I'M ALMOST ASHAMED I KNOW THAT!
COOL BREEZE
Iluvthe80s 2-18-02, 06:39 PM I'm glad someone resurrected this thread again because I thought of another remake the other day. I was listening to the radio and heard Phil Collins doing a version of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors". It was pretty good.
Christine 2-19-02, 08:57 AM You can't forget Diamond David Lee Roth's version of "California Girls"! Probably the weirdest remake I heard was Marylin Manson's version of "Tainted Love", originally by Soft Cell.
stymie71890 3-01-02, 11:34 AM Didn't Marilyn Manilow do a cover of Sweet Dreams also?
(I wouldn't know, I have no use for his drivel.)
Hanoi Rocks - Up Around the Bend (CCR)
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was orignally written/performed by Robert Hazard, a Philly-area songwriter. Cyndi and the guys from the Hooters adapted it.
Soup Dragons, I'm Free (Stones)
Lawnmower Deth (a hilarious deathmetal band) did a couple of versions of Kid In America that will make you pee your pants!
Devo, Are You Experienced (Hendrix)
I can't believe no one mentioned Bananarama's cover of Venus!
Here are a few of my favorites:
Smoking In the Boys Room-Motley Crue (Brownsville Station)
Easy Living- W.A.S.P. (Uriah Heep)
Venus- Bananarama (Shocking Blue)
:hammer:
"Cruisin'" - Huey Lewis (duet) Gwyneth Paltrow
