Ok, so here's my Top 3 Best Albums of the 80's:
#3-Van Halen "1984"..This album was my #3 pick because it's when I first discovered Van Halen. This album had tons of energy and I love every song on it from "Panama" to "Jump". This is one of those albums that you can just listen to and think, "man, I wish I was in Van Halen!"

#2-Tina Turner "Private Dancer"..this showed us that Tina Turner was back and stronger than ever! With songs like "What's Love got to do with it" and "Private Dancer", she truly made a comeback that some said wouldn't happen. This album is truly a defining moment in her career should by far be considered one of the best of the 80's!

#1 Thriller-Michael Jackson, what can I say, this is definetely one of those albums where you can remember where you were when these songs were hits. I think back and everyone was listening to it. "Beat it" and "Billie Jean", you couldn't escape these songs.

Ok everyone, what are your picks?

Nikki, here's my Top 3 albums of the 80's:

3. Notorious by Duran Duran. After DD's seperation for Arcadia and Powerstation I really didn't believe that they could come back. But they did. And this is the only DD album where I honestly like all the songs.

2. Let's Dance by David Bowie. I loved the "polished" David Bowie. The production by Nile Rodgers was brilliant. This was completely different and was certainly setting new standards for post-production as we know it today. Bowie himself hates this album though.

1. Kick by INXS. The album that established INXS as superstars. Not as experimental as their earlier stuff, but very melodic and had a number of hits. I will never get tired of this album. Variety is the keyword for this brilliant album.

Let's see...top 3 albums of the 80's?

Number 3: Yaz "Upstairs at Eric's." This one still can make you move. Pop it in the CD player at your next get together and see what happens.

Number 2: The Police "Synchronicity." A great band and their swansong album. Remember Andy singing "That's my mother on the phone"? Aagh!

Number 1: Michael Jackson "Thriller." Go ahead, laugh. But everyone I knew of all ages, races, and backgrounds owned this album. It crossed all culture lines. Hippies. Goths. Metalheads. Heck, even old ladies had this one.

#3 is Appetite For Destruction by Guns N Roses. It's the first Guns N Roses album I ever got and it rocks. I specialy love the song Paradise City. The album rocks, exept for one song I can't stand, well actualy two: My Michelle and Rocket Queen.

#2 is The Final Countdown by Europe. When I first heard Europe it was The Final Countdown (song) so I went out and got the album. I haven't been getting enough of Europe ever since.

Last but deffinetly not least, #1 is Slippery When Wet. The album that took Bon Jovi to the top of the world. It's just a great album with my fave song since I was two, Livin' On A Prayer (thus the name Amy Livin). I just love the entire album. The guitar, the great hooks (I know for some that hooks aren't a good thing but they work for me) and the incredible lyrics. Also, with this album Bon Jovi also showed that keyboards in a rock band are cool. Specialy with the song Let It Rock.

Too hard for me but here goes:

1. Thriller: Michael Jackson - Have always liked this album and am waiting to get a record player to play my record of it I got second-hand in excellent condition.

2. Rio: Duran Duran - Just had to put at least one in here. So I choose this one, second would be Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Just can't think of the 80s without these guys! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

3. Kick: INXS - I love these guys. Their best stuff was in the 80s. Especially around mid to mid-late 80s. Maybe I'm just patriotic! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well, here a mine, which some of you might find a little strange:

#3: "the luxury gap" by heaven 17. this '83 album was the first one to announce about the new-wave-industrial-kind-of music, which i liked a lot.

#2: "the hurting" by tears for fears. their '82 album was the first, and it was all about the connection between love and pain, and did that alongside a wonderful cold-basic new wave sounds-like music.

#1: "some great reward" by depeche mode. an '84 album which i think was their best ever since.

taht's my three for now. i mean "for now" literally, 'cause if you'll ask me tomorrow i just might pick up 3 other ones... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My picks:

1.) Shout At the Devil -Motley Crue-
Appetite For Destruction -GN'R- (tie)

2.) Look What the Cat Dragged In -Poison-Slippery When Wet -Bon Jovi- (tie)

3.) Peace Sells.....But Who's Buying?
-Megadeth-

4.) Metal Health -Quiet Riot-

5.) Basically any Ozzy album from the 80's!

Mad Dog
6-07-00, 10:34 PM
#3 - Def Leppard - Pyromania
This album set the stage for Bon Jovi, Dokken, and every other hard rock band in the 80s

#2 - Rush - Moving Pictures
My favourite band besides Magnum

#1 - Guns & Roses - Appetite for Destruction
This album blew me away when it came out, and I think it set the stage for the grunge in the fact for the raw power it oozed...quite a difference from the glossy production that every other group was putting out at the time.

This was hard, but here goes:

3) INXS-"Kick"-new and fresh

2) Duran Duran-"Rio"-fun and funky. This changed the way I listened to songs because now I always pick out the bass first. Love "Notorious" also.

1) U2-"War"-it was a toss-up between this and "Unforgettable Fire". Talk about power and energy. Whew!

Well, after a lot of thought, I had to make a few seperate lists.

ROCK:
4 Shout at the devil by Motley Crue

3 Hysteria by Def Leppard

2 Whitesnake by Whitesnake

1 SLIPPERY WHEN WET Bon Jovi
Shout at the devil was when I first reliased that thier was music beyond what was played on the radio. It opened up a whole new world of rock that I never knew was there.
Hysteria was one of those albums that you could listen to and never want to skip a track, great songs top to bottom.
Whitesnake was #2 for me for a number of personal reasons, but mainly because it is such a great cd MUSICALLY. The guitars, bass, and drums, with David Coverdales voice was, to me, THE voice in rock in the late 80s.
But the best CD in the rock genre to me had to be Slippery When Wet. To this day, I still think about that great summer in my life when I listened to this tape every day and was having the time of my life. Never Say Goodbye was our class song, and that was 2 years AFTER the album came out. From top to bottom, every song could have been a single and a top 5 one at that.

POP 3 Rio DURAN DURAN What can be said? great songs, great music, great POP. Why cant a band like them come along these days?

2. Disentigration (did I spell that right?) the Cure. A CD that flows from the first moment you put it on. Sitting at the beach in North Carolina (yes, they DO have beaches there) and listening to this CD was one of hte few things that ever made me feel totally at peace. Pictures of you is probably one of the saddest, yet beautiful songs you will ever hear.

1. Thriller by YOU KNOW WHO. No need to explain this selection.

SOUNDTRACKS

3 Footloose ANY soundtrack with Sammy Hagar is fine by me. This was back when ALL great movies had great soundtracks.

2. TOP GUN This is probably TOO much info, but to this day I still get an erection just from hearing the opening notes of TAKE MY BREATH AWAY. *SO* many great memories associated with that song. Probably the best match of music to a movie in the history of movies.

1. Purple Rain by Prince and the Revolution
What a great movie, what a great song, what a great album. My only wish was they would have had the part where Prince was playing the piano with the Purple Rain music all by himself. I wish they would have just put that in as a bonus track. There isnt a better soundtrack in the HISTORY of soundtracks as far as I am concerned.

There were so many, but to narrow it down in no particular order:

Def Leppard- Pyromania

Ozzy Osbourne- Blizzard of Ozz & Diary of a Madman

AC/DC- For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)

Honorables:

Motley Crue- Any of their albums
Dio- Holy Diver & Last in Line
Judas Priest- Any of their albums
Iron Maiden- Any of their albums

I'll seperate this into 2 categories as well:

POP:
3. Top Gun Soundtrack
2. True Blue - Madonna
1. Different Light - The Bangles

ROCK:
3. The Great Radio Controversy (Tesla) this was the perfect mix of acoustics and electric, plus it has Heaven's Trail, The Way it Is, & Love Song.

2. Hysteria (Def Leppard) This is one of those albums that stands the test of time. Plus it showed a one-armed drummer can play the skins better than anyone else (even if he had some elecrtical help!)

1. New Jersey (Bon Jovi) While Slippery When Wet made them immediate superstars, New Jersey showed that Jon could mature with his lyrics and Richie showed why he was a leader on the axe. This album proved that Bon Jovi was here to stay.

The Hurting-Tears for Fears. Funny, really. This is one of my all time fave albums, but I have not liked ANYTHING they have done since!

7 and the Ragged Tiger-Duran Duran. This album was great. Union of the Snake and the Wild Boys were so differant from earlier DD work. This was a little rougher. (not to mention, I LOVED seeing John Taylor tied to the hood of a Mercedes in the Wild Boys video!!)

Master of Puppets-Metallica. Best Metal album, best Metallica album. This is the album that really started things for Metallica in the mid-eighties. The tour with Ozzy. *sigh* good ol' days

Other faves:
Journey. Everything they did in the 80's
Van Halen-1984.
Heart-Heart
David Bowie-Let's Dance
Def Leppard - Pyromania
Scorpions-I can't remember the name of the damn album! Oh hell.
Anthrax-Among the living
AC/DC-Back in Black and Highway to Hell!!

This Is Way To Hard, But I'll Try Anyway...

3. Back For The Attack- Dokken.
This Album Is Lynch-Era Dokken At Their Prime
2. New Jersey-Bon Jovi/Open Up And Say...Ahh!!!
Two Of The Greatest Hard Rock Alums With Some
Of The Best Rock Anthems
1.Appetite For Destruction-Guns N' Roses
Named #1 Hard Rock Album Of The Millennium By

Ok this is a difficult one, but I'll give it a go

Around the World in a Day - Prince

What a wonderful album. It alienated a lot of Prince fans when it was released because it was sooo different to Purple Rain but I love every song on the album! Standout Track: Paisley Park

From Langley Park to Memphis - Prefab Sprout

An album conceived by Paddy McAloon which focused on the Theme of America. Contains 2 of their biggest hits "Cars and Girls" and "The King of Rock and Roll". Wonderfully crafted pop songs with lyrics that get you thinking.

Wendy and Lisa - Wendy and Lisa

Their debut Album now 16 years old and I'm still playing it all the time.

Couldn't agree with you more on "Paisley park" being the absolute stand out track on that album. It was never released as a single in the US and the 12" import is a much sought after item for collectors (I should say import in the States). I have a copy of course :D Instead of "Paisley park", he released "America" as the third single in the States.

I do like the song "America" although it didnt chart well compared to "Raspberry Beret". The only song I dont like on the album would have to be "condition of the heart". Some of Prince's Ballads are truly wonderful (my favs being "Sometime it Snows in April", "Beautiful Ones", "Slow Love" and "The Cross") but this one just seems to drag a bit.

Mind you any Prince sopng that has Wendy Melvoin playing on it is ok in my book!! WENDY mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................... :D
