View Full Version : 80's Arcades rulz!!!
Nintendofan86 3-15-01, 12:17 AM My favorite arcade of all time is definetly Aladdin's Castle in Chicago/Chicago Ridge,Illinois.I've been going to that place for 15 years beginning with my debut as a customer in Spring,1986.Here are the top 5 games I played during the 1986-1987 year:
1.Rampage
2.Gauntlet
3.Kung Fu Master
4.Time Pilot
5.Super Mario Bros.
Aladdin's Castle is still the Ultimate Party Place!

Hmmm. Let's see. Top five arcade games of the 80's.
Scramble
Tron
Battle Zone
Donkey Kong
Armor Attack
I'm not discriminatory though. I went into a frenzy for any arcade game that I could shove a quarter into. Man I wish I had some of that money back. I can't tell you how many days I went without lunch cause I had spent my money on games.

Nintendofan86 3-15-01, 12:19 PM Hey Roemello,
I take it that you played both the arcade and the NES 8-bit version right? When I rented Rampage for the Nintendo,I was the first one to destroy 128 cities and completed the game back in August,1989 and it became a hit for 9 more years.Wanna know my world record point total? It's 32,320,476 points.

Roemello 3-15-01, 01:56 PM Thanks to emulation, I actually own the arcade version, NES version and GameGear version.
I've played through the N64 version as well. I've finished 'em all...no clue on scores though...never kept track of that http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

Roemello 3-15-01, 03:49 PM Ok Tina....I'm gonna walk you through this deal step by step (and I'm assuming you use a PC and not a MAC).
Ok, first step is to get the emulator. Go to:
http://www.emux.com/english/emulators/mame-windows.phtml . Download the file 'mame32b-037b11.zip' This is the program you use to play the games.
Next, download the rom. Since all my old download sites seem to be down, I had to scrounge this one up. Just go to the following page and download 'goldenaxe(1.3MB)'
http://www.classicgaming.com/vault/roms/arcaderoms.GoldenAxe11506.shtml
Now all you have to do is unzip the emulator (DO NOT unzip the rom!). After unzipping the emulator, it should have created a bunch of folders along with the program itself. Move the zipped rom into the 'roms' folder. Now just open up the mame32.exe file and BOOM! You're in!
If any further assistance is needed, just ask http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Roemello 3-16-01, 07:15 PM It's a decent site, but a little aggressive with the automatic banner pop-ups http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//mad.gif
Anyway, I found it Tina! Ok, go to that link Shakey provided, click on 'ROM files' under the Emulation heading. After weeding your way through all those damn pop-ups, click on the 'Arcade Emulation' link that's right next to "Classic Arcade ROMS at"
After this a new window will open up. Click on 'M.A.M.E.' under the Arcade ROMS heading. Now just click on the letter G, cycle down the list, and there it is....Golden Axe in all it's glory http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Some of them are really small files...if you want one like that Super Pac-man you spoke of one time or even Jungle Hunt/King, I can set up a place for you to download either/both of 'em http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

Hi guys. Yah, I agree with you Roemello. Most ROM files are typically small. That's what throws me about the Goldenaxe rom. It is about 1.5 meg's. That huge... I have a broadband connection, so it's not to bad for me, but if you had a slow connection that would be a pain. If you come up with a place to upload them to, tell me and I will send it your way. Plenty of bandwidth. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Roemello 3-19-01, 05:36 PM Ya know....I might just make a ROM site one of these days. Wouldn't be for a while as I'm strapped for time with my other projects, but at least it'd be a reliable download spot http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Man, I miss those arcade games from the '80s. Here are some of my favorites:
Robotron (all-time favorite)
Tempest
Ladybug
Kangaroo
Star Wars
Tron
Donkey Kong
Wizards of Wor
Roemello 3-22-01, 01:32 AM Funny story I heard this morning on the radio as to why they named Donkey Kong, 'Donkey Kong'
See, originally they wanted to name it King Kong, but the people owning the lisence to King Kong wouldn't allow it. So the makers of the game simply called it Donkey Kong to subtly make an 'ass' out of them http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

lazy boy 3-26-01, 03:34 PM Ahhh, arcades in the early '80s - I have few memories as fond. Southern California, 10 tokens for a dollar, the girls in their really short shorts, smokin' cigarettes before we were old enough.
My favorite game was probably Zaxxon. A buddy showed me a pattern you could follow each time through and get a really high score. The only problem was that between levels when those airplanes would shoot at you, they would ocassionally back up and you couldn't really prepare for it.
Then Star Trek. I never was very good at it, but it was pretty cool. All I remember is shooting at various satellites and stuff, and I think it had some sort of radar to help you find targets.
And Gorf - it started out like one of those bounce the balls into the blocks game, but had a lot of levels after that that were totally different.
Defender - I've got it on my Playstation and I think I've made it up to level six a couple of times. Always a fun game.
And speaking of Playstation, I've got Robotron on it and I've actually gotten pretty good at it, even though it was never a favorite of mine in the arcades.
Those were the days... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif
Yes they were, lazy boy. I liked a lot of games that weren't the big named ones. Crazy Climber, Scramble and Armor Attack come to mind. They were good times...

lazy boy 3-27-01, 01:04 PM Speaking of downloading those games, I tried to download the emulator from that MAME site last night. The file was mame32b-037b11.zip, which is "binary", as opposed to the "source" one which was also listed. Anyhow, the problem was that I left the thing download all night, from about 8:00 pm 'till 8:00 am the next morning, and it didn't even come close to finishing the download. Hardly even got started actually. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif
I don't think it's a problem with my computer, because all the websites I go to seem to load up quickly.
Any suggestions? Should I try downloading one of the other files, like the "source" one? What's the difference?
Thanks - I would really like to play some of the old games again!
Roemello 3-27-01, 04:47 PM No, don't download the source....that's the actual source code of the emulator. Unless you're a programmer, that would be of no use to you.
Don't know why it didn't download....I think Tina got the emu without a problem off that site...http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//confused.gif Shouldn't take that long either, it's only a little over 2 megs....
