View Full Version : Play Station 2
Sal Collaziano 2-05-01, 04:37 PM Well, I just went to buy one of these things and you basically can't! They're like $400.00 (not even complete) but you can't find them anywhere! So, being that I always have to have things NOW, I bought a Play Station PS1.. I've played with them before and they're cool.. I bought it for my other apartment (where my girlfriend lives). I really wanted to DVD with the PS2, though.. Any really good game suggestions you can give me? So far I have Gran Turismo, Arcade Classics, and if I can ever find it, my favorite: Mortal Kombat Trilogy. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Roemello 2-05-01, 05:29 PM My first suggestion would be...don't even bother with getting a PS2...it's a complete waste of money. The original Playstation you have now, you should just stick with. Personally, I don't care for that one either with the exception of the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Cross, and Breath of Fire III. Other than that, when it comes to console gaming, I stick with Nintendo http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif They'll be coming out with a mega system this October (or possible next year) that will blow every other system completely out of the market.

ReagansRenegade 2-05-01, 10:51 PM If you ask me the console wars are too much like PCs with their upgrade chips, in that when a new console is availible (for two hundred dollars more then it costs them to put it together i bet), you hear about one thats FAR more powerful that will be coming out just when the games for the system you want now start to "max out" as far as average performance. Most companies won't even bother maxing out the potentials of the systems, and even if they do it will only be for non interactive graphics or sound- which sucks!
Anyhow for the PSX i suggest "Metal Gear Solid" if you like movie/action games, it's hard to go wrong with that one. There is "Metal Gear Solid: VR Mission Complete" or somesuch- but that isn't the regular game and is more of a puzzle or something.
Star Ocean is a RPG i had but it's so freaking big i never finished it- and it's way too NON linear in a lot of ways http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif I wish Enix had just concentrated on making a cooler linear story, the beginning blows you off the water and then it starts to get repetitive real quick. But I never liked Final Fantasy either- though #8 is supposed to be a big departure.
The best games of course are only in Japan- like Dragon Quest (aka Dragon Warrior), at least as far as my tastes tend.
Roem mentioned Chrono Cross- that is 2D and pretty brilliant looking! And another one like it- forget what its called.
I pawned my PSX before I got to play many games sorry! Although if I still had it I'd get one of the Street Fighter collections from Capcom- maybe the Second one. And Megaman- he has some games on there if you like that.
Did you guys here that Sega has quit the console wars and is going to switch immediately to just making games? It's no rumor it's confirmed by different sources.
Dreamcast is going to go for $100 at about mid this year or later. It might not be a bad deal at all cause they have gotten lots of high quality games.
I heard a lot of disparaging remarks about the Playstation2- sure Sony and their fanatical supporters (i.e. people screwed over by both Nintendo and Sega lol- hey i was screwed over by TTI and NEC with their TG-16!) say the PS2 will have tons of great games- but the X-Box is going to get lots of stuff from Konami too like Metal Gear Solid 2, and others.
I have a bias for X-Box cause Microsoft hasn't REALLY screwed me over yet- I have a WebTV and I it takes up most of my life now, I never bought Windows or ran applications with it, and the X-Box looks even color then the PS2 (how vain is that) and the controller looks real user friendly!
I have seen conversions of PS2 games to X-Box and the X-Box DOES display better with more detail, better resolution, more color and I have yet to see ONE single jaggy (broken lines that look like steps during scaling, rotation or object reduction) in any X-Box screen shots.
Nintendo's GameCube I don't know anything about, except a prototype picture (thing was HUGE!). I never bought a Virtua Boy and memories of Super Mario 64 really left an impression on me. The N64 is not THAT bad lol and the vast majority of PSX games were rip-offs anyhow. (although I loved G-Police because you fly around in a police chopper shooting all kinds of crap in closed off colony stations! but that was JUST a rental).
I still have my SNES! I haven't played Super Mario RPG yet and I want to get a Super Famicom converter so I can play the Japanese version of Axelay (which has two levels missing from the American version!?), so I may not be the best intel for cutting edge gaming.
I always wanted to publish a videogame fanzine, and now I have to live out my editorial dreams on messageboards http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//crying.gif oh what have I become

Roemello 2-06-01, 02:12 AM I love my N64. I've stuck with Nintendo since it came out in 1986 and I haven't looked back since. IMO they have the best brand name characters and fun games out there...Mario, DK, Metroid...and the game series to end all game series...The Legend of Zelda (can ya tell that's my fave of all time? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif ).
The X-box isn't all that critically acclaimed either. It's going to go down in a blaze of very short lived (if any) glory. I've seen prototype screen shots of the upcoming GameCube and that thing...even in it's developement stages...is absolutely flawless. Not only that, but it's only going to cost around $200 for the system and probably 1 controller. That's the good thing about Nintendo...they give you as much quality as they can for your dollar. The only mistake they've ever made in their entire history is making the N64 a cartridge based system. If they made that thing CD, Playstation would be in the same situation as Sega is now with their Dreamcast.

Sal Collaziano 2-07-01, 03:19 PM Hmm. Maybe I will wait to see this new Nintendo system I've been hearing about. I hear it will be CD/DVD, right? I AM interested in X-Box, though. Because of the internet and everything. Will the new Nintendo do this? I WOULD like a nice game system besides the computer - I really DON'T know why! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//icon36.gif

Roemello 2-07-01, 06:12 PM Nintendo GameCube will be a CD system only. They opted out of DVD to keep the cost of the system low for consumers (aren't they nice http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif ).

Roemello 2-08-01, 06:47 PM Take my word for it....Nintendo ALWAYS finds a way to make their systems better than the rest (with the exception of the cartridge mistake of N64).
As far as DVD goes, you should just pick up a stand alone player...they go pretty cheap these days http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif You'd get a lot more features with a stand alone player too http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

"The only true knowledge exists in knowing, that you know nothing"
ReagansRenegade 2-09-01, 11:25 AM I just want to mention my experience in videogames, which may be a lot different then others. This is soley for my own musing and benefits no one particularly, as usual.
Not once I have a purchased a system that turned out to be as worthwhile or have the sort of long-term usage that was advertised. The NES of course was necessary for survival, and the SNES was a great era for nerdom, no question! The coming of SF2 was an added bonus.
The TG-16 had NOTHING- it was underpowered, hardly 16-bit, and seemed to have a WORSE and MORE linear graphical mechanics system then the NES- even though it had more color and a little more power in a certain respect. This was an aging system in Japan by the time it was released stateside, and not only that but it's half-way decent games (if a decent game could be generated using it's microprocessors) were NEVER released here and what did wash up on our shore, averaged at least 3 years past it's prime.
NEC has to be one of the most hateful, greedy companies that ever existed. All we despised TG-16 owners had to count on was Hudson Soft- and that company is equally strange.
The Sega-CD! It did not contain ONE single side-scroller that reached the standards of a good Genesis cartridge game, except Sonic CD, maybe Wonder Dog (or was that for the Saturn!? it doesn't seem to matter). All of it ten times over priced.
But some companies, perhaps to spite Sega intentionally, came up with products almost worthy of the hype. These included "Third World War" and the games that were made for Mattel in NINETEEN EIGHTY SIX (they decided it wouldn't be fiscal to release their own videogame console): Sewer Shark (once you get halfway through it kicks ass...sorta), Night Trap, and that other one where aliens invade, which was developed later on and wasn't nearly as good as the other two because it didn't have Dana Plato or any real historical significance whatsoever.
That was IT, except maybe the almost excruciatingly slow and confusing (especially to a 12 year old who wants to spray blood, blow things up and see a garter belt or two) Sherlock Holmes. If Sega had ANY shame they would have made it so that a copy of every game released for the Sega CD was mailed directly to disillusioned, displaced, and deceived owners.
But that wouldn't be fiscal and we're just idiot children anyway who will bite at any hope of distraction now that the eighties were taken away. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//CRYING2.gif Well that was the situation for me... Mmmm, i'll get back to this later unless you want me to stop.
The moral of this story is going to be that you might as well wait until a company STOPS supporting a system before deciding if had acheived a respectable library.
I have to disagree with Roem & Tina on this one. I picked up the PS2, and it totally rocks! Nintendo is awesome also, I have the N64, but the games Nintendo makes are definitely geared for the younger market. Hence the more cartoony characters. For games like that, platformers and such, it's hard to beat the Nintendo system.
However, for racing and sports games, PS blows everyone out of the water completely. Madden 2001 on the PS2 is so incredible I sometimes just program the computer to play itself, pop open a Mike's hard lemonade and watch the game!
Gran Turismo III completely crushes ANY racing game I've ever played on ANY system. Where else can you actually tweak the gearing in your transmission, the damper on your shocks, and the camber on your tires for a particlular course? The graphics are astounding, during replays you can actually see the brake discs heating up during hard breaking into the turns!!!
Also, games like Metal Gear Solid and any of the Resident Evil series look and play WAAAAY better on the PS than on the N64. I can't wait until they come out for PS2. There's also a game called Silent Hill that I defy anyone to play alone in the dark at night and not get goosebumps at least once! Dino Crisis, Jet Moto, Driver & Driver 2, Twisted Metal: Black....these games all rock!
Take it from someone who owns both systems, the PS has them all beat for more "adult" oriented games. Nintendo does corner the market on "arcade" style though. I found the perfect solution...buy them both!!!
80sSmurf 7-21-01, 09:01 PM I have to agree with Pagan. For all it's flaws PS2 is the best at the moment.
It's got the biggest softwaredeveloper support, and by the this fall things should start to look even better for this machine, since he 2nd generation games will start flooding the market. Oh and if u like programming Sony's included YaBasic, nice li'l feature me thinks Use ur controller or plug in an usb-keyboard & a harddrive's just been released.
This said it also has it downsizes. No monitor means u have to plug it into a hi-def tv to get that crisp pic u get on ur CPU. Games r very expensive. I have serious doubts 'bout the online capabilities being all that great (I'll stick to my CPU for that).
If ur looking for a diverse gamingplatform to just start & play both playstation One & 2 r very nice, I'll choose 'em any day over Nintendo,as I think Nintendo seems to focus more on a younger audience, I know they've made some adultorientated games, but IMO they still lack a lot in that department.
Game slooking good right now would be: SSX (must-buy), Crazy Taxi, Gran Turismo 3 & Tekken Tag (unless u already got Tekken3).
Games coming this fall to look for: WipeOut Fusion, Li'l Red Racer, GTA 3 & MGS 2.
I also have to agree with Pagan 'bout racing games being good on PSone & 2. Racing, Platform & fighting games r usually great for these systems. Stay well ckear of FPS, RTS & adventures.
Nope! Sorry. It's gonna have to be the Gamecube for me! I strayed from Nintendo once (Sega Genesis) and always regretted it. Give me Nintendo and Zelda and I'm a happy guy.
I'm glad that Pagan brought up games like Resident Evil though. That whole series is superb. I'd rather play them on my computer though. They look fantastic with the Geforce2 video card.
My fav. game right now is definitely Gran Turismo 3 for PS2. It has incredibly graphichs, easy to learn and tons of challenges for a single player.
I like Nintendo alot, but they tend to gear their US releases towards children and very young adults. I think this is a smart move, since Sony has failed to keep that audience. I am gonna wait a while and see the software lineup before deciding on a GameCube.
I feel the same way about Microsoft's X-Box. I am very impressed with screenshots and demos, but I am gonna wait with that as well.
I think now is the time to buy a PS2. There will be lots of good releases in the near future and there are already a handful of extremely good games out there.
-Mike
80sSmurf 7-22-01, 09:36 AM I'd advise anybody about to buy a concolesytem to wait .
With both X-box & GameCube around the corner, and the Sony tradition to cut prizes and make special offers before the x-mas shopping-spree, the sensible thing to do would wait it out a few months and see what happens. Expect prizedrops come november.
Rent a machine for starters and see which one is to ur likings
Poison PJ 7-23-01, 01:40 AM X-box's Gonna Be DOA, Gamecube Is gonna Sell Extremely Well And PS2 Will Cotinue To Rock
Roemello 7-23-01, 02:14 AM I've always stuck with Nintendo...the games are just more fun for me. Unless I'm in an arcade, one on one fighting games bore the hell out of me....not big on racing, not big on sports games. The only credit I give to Playstation is with Playstation 1...the RPG's like Final Fantasy are spectacular.
Playstation 2 has nothing at all that impresses me and with a price as high as it is, it's not even close to worth the money. Especially where the GameCube is going to be far and away the greatest system ever made and it's only gonna cost 200 bucks

PS2 is now $199....and the biggest thing about it that I forgot to mention, which ALL game systems should take into consideration, is that it's backwards compatable. You can play PS1 games in it also.
The jury's out on Gamecube. Everyone said that the 3DO was going to be ther greatest system also, along with the Dreamcast. It remains to be seen. Hopefully it will.
What games are you into Roem?
If you're a die-hard Nintendo fan, then you like Zelda, Mario & Donkey Kong more than anything else. That is the only reason, since everything else is available on other consoles. I think it's awfully judgemental to like one machine and dislike the rest.
There are good games on every console. I own all existing consoles and have favs. for all of them.
If someone thinks that X-Box will fail from day one, then they are in for a surprise. The X-Box looks like the bomb for people who are tired of constantly upgrading their PC's for gaming purposes.
On the other hand, the GameCube looks awesome too. I'm just a little reluctant to buy yet another console only to play Zelda, Mario, Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong.
Every machine have pros and cons. It's a question of finding the one, that suits your personal preferences.

About the jury being out...GameCube blew everyone away at the CES (or whatever the heck that electronics expo is called). X-Box is just a bland system mimicing computer gaming...it's not breaking any barriers really, so it'll be going nowhere fast...especially where it's releasing so close to the GameCube. Also, 3D0 wasn't exactly made by a company that knew too much about gaming. Sega's only hallmark has been there sports games...other than that, they've never been all that impressive either, so I knew both those systems (3D0 and Dreamcast) weren't going all that far.
What games am I into? RPG's and action/adventures. That's why I do give Playstation 1 it's due...love the Final Fantasy series, the continuation of Breath of Fire from the old SNES, and Chrono Cross

Ehhh....What about games like Amped, Halo and Munch's Odyssee for X-Box? They don't look bland to me. I attended the E3 Expo where both Microsoft and Nintendo presented their latest wonders. I think that they appeal to each their group, but I wouldn't exactly call any of them bland.
The fastest selling game ever is Sonic Adventure for Sega Dreamcast. The second fastest is Soul Calibur for..surprise surprise..Sega Dreamcast. Just so we don't mix facts with opinions.
80sSmurf 7-23-01, 07:11 PM Well, some nice pro & cons for various systems. Seems like they all have their weaknesses and strenghts. So far we can conclude different systems appeal to different people (BIG surprise there )
I still say, rent 1st & check the gamecatalogue, then make your descision.
Me: I don't really have a favourite gamegenre, it changes all the time.
Right now I'm holding my breath for THPS 3...online skating WooHoo & WipeOut Fusion

Damn..I used to love RPG's. I just don't have the time to really get into them anymore. By action/adventure, do you mean FPS? There's one coming out for PS2 called "Red Faction" that finally allows you to do one thing I've always wanted to do in a game. You come to a locked door...no key? No problem, blow the sucker off it's hinges! Also, if your heat seeker senses someone behind a wall and you have the proper weapon, you can waste them THROUGH the wall! How f@#kin' cool is that!
We have come to one conclusion, and that is that it does come down to game genre choice for what system you like.
By the way Roem, you get Conker's Bad Fur Day yet for N64? If not you MUST get it! It's one of the better playing platformers I've ever played, and it's funny as hell. I actually laughed out loud at least once or twice on every level!
Poison PJ 7-23-01, 09:39 PM Plus The Original Playstation took The Best Side Scroller/Action Series For SNES, Megaman X, And Perfetced It.
And Dreamcast has One 2 Of The Greatest games Ever Made, Shenmue & Phantasy Star Online
Phantasy Star Online. I couldn't agree with you more, Poison PJ. What a monster game!!

I rented that game, Pagan. Funniest game I've ever played. The Matrix spoof was cool, but "Saving Private Rodent" was the best. I laughed my @ss off playing that bit. Listen to the man, Roem. Rent this! It's classic.
