View Full Version : Your favourite Heaven 17 Song
Prefab Sprouter 2-23-05, 10:28 AM Probably my favourite New Wave Group. Anyway what is your favourite song by the lads from Sheffield who left Human League to form Heaven 17?
BTW, Glenn Gregory was the original choice for lead singer of Human League but Philip Oakey got the job after he turned it down!!!
I went with 'Temptation' because it's just an awesome piece of music, but i absolutely adore 'Let's all make a bomb', not the album version but a mix that was either the b-side of 'Temptation' or 'Come Live With Me'.
Great band and the B.E.F. spin offs were fantastic too. :thumb:
Prefab Sprouter 2-23-05, 10:55 AM I chose "We dont need this Fascist Groove Thing" although I like all the songs on the list.
Ian Craig Marsh and Martin Ware also Produced Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" album too!!!
I've got a 12 inch of Glenn Gregory and Claudia Brucken (from Propaganda) called 'When Your Heart Runs Out Of Time'.
I don't recall it being a huge hit.

She's not very tall!

Yes but I must confess there is something about her I do find attractive. Mind you I've always taken "Striking" over "Pretty" anyway.
Dont recall that song but I must check it out now!

If you'd like the mp3, just ask! I agree, there was something attractive about her in a unconventional way.
Sorry boys, gotta disagree....'Temptation' kicks SERIOUS butt. I think it made every other 17 song look ordinary, although I did like 'Facist Groove Thing'.
'Temptation' is a seriously underrated song.

'Temptation' is a seriously underrated song.Unbderrated????? I do agree but what annoys me about Radio in Ireland is that its the only song by Heaven 17 that they bother to play and as can be seen from the poll there is a lot more strings to their bow!!!!
Eric T H 2-28-05, 04:41 PM Let me go - especially the 12" version as it's proper pukka :bouncy:
Heaven 17 are another of the groups I collect so I've got alot of what they've released, the B.E.F. releases are also well worth checking out if you come across them.
Another link between Heaven 17 and the Human League, when H17 performed their first live gig as a support act to Erasure, the final song they did was a version of the Leagues 'Being Boiled' which Marsh and Ware wrote. ;)
ps I will second Gazza's nod about the Gregory / Brucken song it's a great song, from the soundtrack to the film "Insignificance".
xistenza 2-28-05, 06:58 PM i had to vote for "we don't need this fascist groove thing". my friends and i used to laugh our asses off at this song, although, we all really liked it.
i also recall hours of laughter around the album cover. those guys had the worst haircuts ever.
Xcess-N-Htown 2-28-05, 07:12 PM "Bob Be Di Bop de Bop" Let Me go is a classic
Brand1974 2-28-05, 07:55 PM Let Me Go gets my vote!
I also like Crushed by the Wheels of Industry and Play To Win

But they had sensible haircuts!! Glenn just combed it straight back & the other two looked like they worked in a bank! But compared to Mr 'Flock Of Seagulls' & Phil Oakey they appeared normal! :thumb:

true. you know, now that i think about it, i think it was their fashion sense we were laughing at. haha.
(p.s. - i personally always liked the flock of seagulls look ;) )
Eric T H 3-02-05, 08:29 AM Don't forget my Homie Limahl if your talking classic 80's haircuts

Jefferson Starship 3-10-05, 11:25 AM Penthouse and Pavement
I'm so addicted to that song!!! :hyper:
i vote for the "other" option. my vote goes to the sublime "This is mine"...
i have the original 12" single, and there is a bizarre talky bit in the middle of the track! i also love the synthetic horns, and the songs uplifting message!
whistledog 3-22-05, 01:01 PM I did not see This is Mine in the list, so I voted for 'Other'. The whole How Men Are album was great! :thumb:
Another lost gem is Heaven 17's Teddy Bear, Duke & Psycho (nicknames?). I still listen to the import cassette i purchased @ Tower Records in the late eighties. It is a unique combination of synth-pop and funk-soul. It features catchy uptempo numbers like Don't Stop For Nothing and Train Of Love In Motion, not to mention sweeping ballads. Not their best work, but a very consistent effort and probably a lot less dated as their more popular material!
80's fanatic 3-26-05, 01:36 AM 'Let Me GO' :)
Poindexter 5-04-05, 12:37 AM Other: Play To Win :thumb:
BlitzKid 5-20-05, 05:24 PM Let me go - especially the 12" version as it's proper pukka :bouncy:
Don't know the word pukka, but otherwise I agree with you, the 12" version kicks ass! :yesnod:
Good Vibes 5-20-05, 06:38 PM Let Me Go is awesome. I still listen to that song A LOT.
industrialgeek 6-04-05, 03:03 AM Temptation is one of my absolute favorites by them. I couldn't think of a better song of theirs to sing loudly in front of a steamy mirror in the bathroom. :D
Monty007® 12-01-05, 08:15 AM Let Me Go top tune :thumb:
Let Me Go - but I could have chosen I'm Your Money (Buy this! Sign here!) or Penthouse and Pavement or Temptation or Groove Thang. One song missing is the song they did with Jimmy Ruffin called "Foolish Thing to Do" - sadly NOT a huge hit.
Going back to the Claudia Brucken/Glenn Gregory single - I think they were married at some point as well.
My vote has to go to the ballad...
"Come Live With Meeeee... " :)
