View Full Version : The CD still soon fizzle out
Steve Savicki 1-31-05, 10:18 AM So I heard a DJ on this country station saying CDs will be gone soon just like cassettes, vinyl and even those that remember 8-tracks. They will be replaced with the Ipod.
I sure hope that doesn't happen. I love my little setup. I love the tape player that comes with it. I love how everything doesn't have to be computerized.
Newer isn't necessarily better. In fact, there is old-fashioned technology I actually miss. I miss my 5 band graphic equalizer that came with old radios back when CD players were sold separately and were attached to analog tape players.
I think you can safely say CD's will be replaced one day just like Betamax and VHS being replaced by DVD.
There's always a new better form of storage with better sound quality and for purely horrible commercial reasons, the record companies can cash in on your old favourites by slappin 'Digitally Remastered' or 'Recorded in Okey Dokey 2000 Stereo graphic shear clipping 440MHZ clarity' and we go and buy our old albums again and they save money gambling on good new artists coming through.

Define "good new" LOL :mwaha:
Define "good new" LOL :mwaha:
I know there is a dearth of very poor new artists around at the moment, rap being a genre VERY short on ideas at this point in time, your hit is based on how good the chorus of your 'ripped off' sample is.
But i think there are some very good acts coming through (these obviously depend on your taste in music), as i said elsewhere The Kaiser Chiefs are one act i like coming through.
The dance scene has been very stale and written off as 'dead' in the UK press, but it has some very exciting acts coming through.
Even 'British rap' is good at the mo', established act The Streets and a very funny Welsh act Goldie Looking Chain (personal fave 'Your Mother's got a penis') being good.
Though the '80's were a defining moment in music, there still is great music still to be discovered! :thumb:
whistledog 1-31-05, 02:28 PM I don't really like Ipods. I like being ablwe to go to the store and buying a CD. I hope CD's don't ever die
Roemello 1-31-05, 02:43 PM I can't see that happening really... the ipod is just a portable mp3 player, ain't it? I'd venture to guess that no one's gonna just give up their home sterio systems for a little pod :p I can see it possibly replacing discmans, but CD's? naaaaaaaah. A lot of people share the mindset of whistledog... myself included... in preferring a physical copy of their music
I agree with Roem and Whistle...CDs aren't going anywhere.
I much prefer a physical recording of a CD but the next generation of youngsters have been brought up on mp3's etc. The UK singles chart is going to become a combined download & CD sales chart. Also the Mobile Phone Ringtones are actually outselling the CD version of chart hits here, which is very sad.
BrandyBlue 1-31-05, 02:48 PM I don't think that CDs will fade anytime soon. I think if anything they will become smaller and denser. Think about it, though--even if they fade in the next ten years or so, people will still burn the blanks like crazy. It's almost impossible to find a cassette tape but you can ALWAYS find blanks around so you can make your own. Some artists still release their stuff on a limited basis on LPs. I never see an 8 track around but I wasn't too broken up to see them go. Did you ever try to get a stuck one out of a deck?
Most things in this world, in our disposable society, will fade away eventually, but this is still much, much too popular to go anywhere for a while.
Steve Savicki 1-31-05, 04:14 PM You can find brand new 8-tracks at your GoodWill.
And yes, I prefer to dish out music old-fashioned style as well. Get the physical CD to see the cover art... ahh the glory days of vinyl when the pictures were bigger and the lettering was actually legible to where you didn't have to squint.
Where have all the good times gone?
I don't necessarily think that the IPOD is going to replace the CD, but I do think the CD is eventually going to be replaced. I agree with gazza67 that while we prefer CD's, the younger generation have been weened on a digital medium and eventually their buying power will influence the market enough that vendors will move to the arena of sales.
cultleader 1-31-05, 05:17 PM Technology always marches on,it's just like photography.I've been into photography ever since I was a little kid with his very own Kodak 110 Instamatic(remember those?)I love film, all my cameras are film cameras, you just can't beat the look of photo's taken on film(not to mention I shelled out the money for my cameras,I'm not giving them up,goddammit)but I had a guy at the local camera shop tell me that film cameras will be obsolite within 10 years.I hate Digital it's not real photography to me(I know many would disagree but I'm jaded so deal with it,:D )it's the same with CD's,one day they will be obsolite, maybe not anytime soon but it will happen.
I love the 'old' stuff so much that I have an early 1960's Magnavox console record player in a wooden cabinet in my livingroom. I love to play my vinyl on it. The sound is poor compared to CD's or digital, but I don't care. I have vinyl (including lots of 45's), tapes, CD's, VHS & DVD's as well as MP3's. I just sold off my 8 track player and a load of 8 track tapes. Kinda wish I would not of though... But I do not own a portable MP3 player... I just play them on the PC. I don't mind improvements or even change, but I don't see why they have to 'do away' completely with the older ways...
Steve Savicki 1-31-05, 05:27 PM You and me both cult! Still have never had a digital photography!
Still love my old "analog?" film camera. Can't get enough of that bulb effect.
Just like I wonder if some people consider digital music or even CDs "too clean"- some prefer the old analog sound with the crackles, pops, and skips of good ol' vinyl record.
CDs aren't going anywhere.
Ditto. :thumb:

I hope not. I'm still buying more vinyl than prerecorded CDs at this point. :p Use CD-R's to record mixes.

Great point!
Eventually, the CD will go away, though we may not live to see it. Vinyl records were around for almost 100 years in some form or fashion. One thing that may save CD's in the face of the mp3 craze is that CD's can be easily converted to mp3 format for use on mp3 players, with little or no loss of quality.
I have an mp3 player, I use it everyday. But I still buy CD's and listen to them.
