From that list, Alphaville for me.

Depeche Mode's 'New Life' probably sums up best what synthpop is all about for me though. ;)

For me none of them. The best synth pop band are and always will be A Flock of Seagulls. They made some great songs. They are based in the States now and still touring. The only original band member is Michael Score. They did.'t bring out any new material since the original band split up. The new band plays only the old stuff.

The Greatest synth song ever? That poll should have 5,000 choices!

'New Life' was a synth masterpiece, perfect in every way.

My all time favourite synth pop song is 'State of the Nation' by Industry. I could listen to that song for hours on end :thumb:

Erasure's A Little Respect is the only song on that list I've heard.

Money making or most popular would have to be Smalltown Boy and A little Respect with maybe Never let me down again as those songs are still being played today. My favorite would be The Great Commandment though.

Off of that list I chose Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode...this list should have many other songs...but that would take it's own thread...

Actually I just saw them and they are the original band...they are touring (maybe briefly) in support of Bands Reunited. Mike Score has a all new band...don't know if he's going to go back to that band or if the original members are going to record again.

Their first album was a new wave masterpiece. Their second was pretty good but it was all downhill after that.

At the risk of sounding anal, I still can't classify Depeche Mode's 'Never Let Me Down Again' as synthpop despite the fact it's currently in the lead.

For me, Depeche ceased to be involved in the synthpop movement the moment Clark Left, and seeing as 'Never Let Me Down' was a M.L Gore song written in trademare M.L Gore style, I can't see why this is seen as synthpop.

Arguments for the defence please!

Nope

"See You" was proberbly the last pure pop song they did. after that, they got progressively darker/experimental. Mind you, Even Vince was more experimental and less pure pop with Yazoo (I before c, Ode to boy) but no with his single releases.

I agree that there could be a whole lot of Synthpop songs listed for this poll.

With that said, I did go with Erasure's A Little Respect as my choice.

Depeche Mode would come in second.

I agree with you Chasey on this particular song. It doesn't really seem Synthpop to me. Now if you would have had something from Speak and Spell on there, or maybe Strangelove (maybe?) as a choice I might have picked that first.

I still think it's a great song though, which is why it was my second choice. :thumb:

It's funny how groups can do so much better in other countries than their own, in the UK A Flock Of Seagulls were generally derided after (the admittedly brilliant) 'Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)'. Probably due to the backlash against the singers hairstyle (!) their career virtually finished there in the UK.
Maybe we were a bit unkind to them, whilst certainly not the best synth group by a country mile i have to admit that 'I Ran' grew on me after GTA Vice City inclusion.

The Deps were synthpop with Gore writing i thought as 'See You' & 'The Meaning Of Love' carried on the 'pop' tone. I agree after that they got less poppy and more interested in darker material.

All good choices, but really if we're talking about true synth music here, Human League's the only real choice...

And I may be wrong here, but didn't Martin Gore play guitar on that Depech Mode album (and the NLMDA track)? Assuming so, that should immediately eliminate the song from consideration, IMHO!

:)

I wouldn't personally class Vienna as Synthpop in the slightest. It's a masterpiece, but it's not essentially synthpop in my opinion. ;)

Out of this list, Alphaville. Sounds like a melody is one of the best synthie pieces.

I didn't see any Ultravox songs on the list... they are my synthie heros, big suprise.

Yep, masterpiece! As so often, we agree on this. We should find out the definition of synthpop. Is it music done on a synthesizer or ist it a certain typ style of Music.

Synthpop is a certain style, but none of the songs in the list of options realy qualyfies as a synthpop song. Bands like Nitzer Ebb, S.P.O.C.K. and Second Decay are real synthpop bands, IMHO.

I have to say *none of the above*. My favorite classic synthpop bands are Thomas Dolby, OMD, VNV Nation and Nitzer Ebb. My current favorite is LADYTRON-- they are so much fun :bouncy:-- I also like anything Trent Reznor touches :yesnod:

on that particular list, it's hard to top "the Great Commandment"... that was a powerful synth song.... but anything by Vince Clarke is great (some of his stuff is kinda slow and maybe not considered wholly synth-pop). But what about some old Human League, that is some pretty good synth music ("Being Boiled")?
