Take a moment today and be silent to remember the people who's sacrifices made sure we weren't typing in Japanese or German right now. Take a moment to think about everyone who won't be with their families this holiday season. Take a moment to think of those who won't ever be with their families again.

Thank you Jasper, and any other Xchanger who served, for your sacrifice.

Here's to all our grandfathers - mine wore his 'tin hat' proudly!

My husband just spent the last week in the Veterans Hospital for heart prblems and diabetes diagnosis. I spent the whole week either by his side or in a waiting room or the hospitality house on the VA medical center campus they had for families to stay.

I had opportunity to talk to alot of veterans from many different wars. While I didn't enjoy the reason I was at the hospital, I did enjoy the conversations I had.

Here is a poem in honor of our vets:
THE VETERAN: Our Nation’s Heroes

The heroes welcome in which we once honored you, in your mind is fresh and new . . .
as a country, we could never repay the debt...which rightfully, we owe to you.
Look at our nation’s veteran warriors, see their bravery, hear of their past ordeals...
for each one is a ‘living treasure’ with a story of service, which is quiet real.
* * *
As a young person enlisted in the armed forces, you recited the oath of the military...
you were brave, an adventurous spirit, to begin a new life that was quite scary.
You woke up early and stayed up late, in lines for chow, often...you silently stood...
representing our country’s fighting best...as you fought for peace and for good.
* * *
See the gray hairs or the weakened bodies of men and women, who once were strong...
some served our military for a few years...while others had careers...quite long.
The fighter’s uniform doesn’t matter, an American you are through and through...
now confined to a bed or a wheelchair...your love for freedom was always true.
* * *
These veterans of our many wars, from Valley Forge to the sandy Persian Gulf...
sacrificed life, limb, and torture, while many others as POW/MIA’s ... were lost.
Many vets are now fighting personal wars: psychiatric, substance abuse or disease...
a service by-product for the country they fought for, to see its flag waving free.
* * *
As military, you are our nation’s heroes, from our past, down to our present-day...
a valiant veteran, who served with valor...is what all the historians...now say.
While others may read the history books, to remember the tasks, you did...
the physical scars and daily pains are badges of honor...which must not be hid.
* * *
A veteran you will always be, whether in a ceremony, a hospital or a grave...
for each generation should oft recall...your sacrifice to this country...you made.
Therefore, when you see a veteran, here stands one, who has passed loyalty’s test...
they came and did all their country required of them, while giving of their best.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

~ John McCrae (1872-1918)

Jasper isnt the only one of us. I'm thinking we had this thread before and there were at least a dozen or so xchangers who had served. I was a member of the 527th Mech Engineering (Army) during the first Gulf War. Shockson served in a tank unit during that time as well, though I cant recall his unit name. To all who have put thereselves aside and served there country I thank you.....

Happy Vetrans day to all of you and a big thank you to all vetrans. I went to a funeral today and as I walked along I stopped and thanked the graves with flags and set some flags back up that had been knocked over. It was amazing to me how many flags there were!
