I'm curious what the most covered song in the 80's to become a hit was? (does not have to be originally an 80's song)
Ones that spring to mind:
The 1986 song 'Kiss' by Prince was a hit in 1987 for The Age of Chance and in 1989 for the Art of Noise with Tom Jones
The 1970 classic 'All Right Now' by Free. It was a hit for both Rod Stewart and a http://www.webfitz.com/lyrics/Charts/1984/canFlag.gif Canadian group called The Santers in 1984
The Elvis classic 'Always on My Mind' was a hit in 1982 for Willie Nelson and in 1988 for Pet Shop Boys
The classic Dusty Springfield song 'I Only Wanna Be With You' was a hit for Tourists in 1980 and Samantha Fox in 1988
The Bay City Rollers also covered it, but that was the 70's, and Nicolette Larson had a minor hit in the early 80's also.

oh yeah, I'd forgotten about Nicolette's version
Unless another song can beat it's three covers, I think we have a winner :) :thumb:

What about 3 versions of a song in the same year?
1989 saw Joy and Pain released by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, Donna Allen and also Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.
So far as I can remember they were all versions of the same song.
True Love ways was a hit for Buddy Holly in 1960 and again in 1988, plus Peter & Gordon had a hit with it in 1965 with Cliff Richard taking it into the top ten in 1983.
But that's still not the winner :tsk:
True Love originally a hit for Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in 1956 and again in 1983, was also a hit for Terry Lightfoot and his New Orleans Jazzmen in 1961, as well as for Richard Chamberlain in 1963, and then finally a hit for the Welsh wonder Shakin' Stevens in 1988.
So you have 4 artists there with two of the releases in the 80's, and I'll have to stop digging up these cheeky ones. :mwaha:

Iko Iko (the clapping song) ?
Belle stars
Natasha
At least one other version i can think of as well! All at the same time.
Of course, non-hits, Unchained melody seemed to be done by several artists, Leo Sayer and (not sure if its 80's) U2 (a B-side) and can be seen as possibly one of the most coverd song around.

1982's Iko Iko by the Belle Stars was a re-chart in 1989 for North America
I quite liked the Natasha version a bit better through :)

Well there were two versions of "Funkytown" (technically I guess the Lipps, Inc. one was 1979 but it was popular in 1980)....
