View Full Version : The Lost Eighties Hits- You call 'em!
The Swarm 10-26-00, 03:17 AM Ok, we all know which songs "made it" because we see them on commercials and listen to them on the radio, and what not. And we all know our favorite sleeper "hits" that were on the radio a brief amount of time but for some reason failed to ignite the public interest. But what I want to know is what songs are out there that, for the life of you, you cannot figure out why they did not become hits, much less get much (if any) air play. What songs are near and dear to your heart but not one of your friends could hum even a bar? (I'm really looking for songs that really could have been hits. I have some obscure music I like that I'm fully aware will never catch on.)
Since I get first crack, here are mine. For all I know these could have been popular in the 80's and I just didn't catch it, but here we go:
Brothers- Kim Wilde
I'll Set You Free- Bangles
Don't Wanna Let You Go- Quiet Riot (did this song get air time? don't remember.)
What Color R the Skies Where U Live- Bananarama
Summer Rain-Belinda Carlisle
My Obsession- Icehouse
Jaded Heart- Dokken
Inside A Dream- Jane Wiedlin
Midnight Star- Weird Al Yankovich
If some of these fail my criteria, please let me know-- I'll sleep better at night.
ReagansRenegade 10-26-00, 05:55 AM You know i think i hear "You are my Obsession" here in Orlando during "Friday Night 80s", but i dont remember it from when i was growing up so i think it still fits the bill.
I dont know too much about the hits of the 80s cause i was a little kid, but there plenty that i simply never remember hearing before that i am suprised to find were not much more popular. Ones i can think of are:
'Whos That Girl?' -Madonna (the synth bars are wonderful)
'Gambler' -Madonna
'Open Your Heart' -Madonna
'Cherish' -Madonna
'Hazy Shade of Winter' -Bangles (this might have been popular but this was near the end of the "good taste" era in America)
'It's So Easy' -GNR
'Mr.Brownstone' -GNR
'Think About You' -GNR
'Transformers' -Lion
'Gods of War' -Def Leppard
...darn thats the best i can do for now. I need to get a PC so i can find more music. I know more "should've been" hits of the 90s, a lot of material from No Doubt's "Beacon Street Collection", later GNR and stuff.
Have to go with, Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party.Killer tune. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//PSYCHO.gif
ReagansRenegade 10-26-00, 09:15 AM Yeah Flarpo that song KICKS. But man is it weird. Heh.
Sorry RR all those Madonna songs were hits and I still hear them. How about the entire Howard Jones, A ha, and Outfield collection. I love every single one of those songs and only a few ever got air play where I grew up.

keeping) Keeping the 80s alive
"Somewhere in my heart I'm always dancing with you in the summer rain.." that whole cd is excellent. (Belinda Carlisle)
You guys are mentioning some really good stuff. I miss Oingo Boingo. It sounds like California, where I'm going back to.
Howard Jones ("Throw off your mental chains"..
How about this one? (not sure about the name. It's old INXS.
"Tilt my head
at the sun
and the shadows they....
Light me, and i'll burn for you,
and the love song never stops.."
(here's another good one)
"Bring on the dancing horses.."
(Echo and the Bunnyman)
"I see your true colors shining through.."
(Cyndi Lauper)
Love and Rockets
"Private Future"
OMD
"Tesla girls, tesla girls,
now and then they'll watch tv.
Now and then they'll speak to me.
But heaven knows their recipe."
and "Secret" by OMD
"Jeruselum" from good ole Sinead(Skinhead) O'Connor. She had some really cool ones on the Lion and the Cobra.

I have to say
Never Say Goodbye - Bon Jovi
They forgot Heart all together.
------------------
Elloit
Hmmm great question.
I agree with Zel, Outfield should have had more hits, I only hear 2 songs from the "Play Deep" album...the whole thing is great.
How about Scandel...the Warrior is the only one I heard all the time, their other stuff was great.
Aldo Nova and Night Ranger had great songs as well but only a few hit the airwaves.
My personal favorite was XTC, songs like Respectable Street & Living through another Cuba were great songs but never caught on to the general public.
I'm sure there are tons more I'm just brain dead today http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

trishmrn 12-21-00, 06:12 PM I could name hundreds...if only I could remember the names of the songs. I loved so many songs in the 80's and don't remember the titles to many of them. I can remember one or two lines but that does me no good...but the ones I actually can think of...Get around Girl (Tommy Tutone)
The Hooters....saw them in concert with Loverboy. Why Me....(Planet P) Fine Fine Day (Tony Carey)
What if I hum a few bars from those others...do you think anyone could help me out with title and artist...
"I'm the victim of a young girls heart it such a tragedy she's too young for my love, all the things I'm thinking of..."
"You're making me hot Sherry I want what you got all over me. Isn't my love strong enough.......long enough"
I used to roller-skate to those and would love to be able to fine them.....anyone...anyone...
You are in luck.
"I'm the victim of a young girls heart it such a tragedy she's too young for my love, all the things I'm thinking of..."
This is "Tragedy" by Arc Angel, from around 83.
"You're making me hot Sherry I want what you got all over me. Isn't my love strong enough.......long enough"
This is "Hot Cherie" by Danny Spanos off his album Passion in the Dark. Not sure what year (early 80s).
If you have any more, post them and we will try to help.
trishmrn 12-28-00, 11:27 AM Thanks TJ, Now I can go out and search for them......http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif
Metalfan83 12-30-00, 03:28 AM Here's my list. Gotta be quick, 'cause my computer's being a pain in the @$$.
Dokken - Dream Warriors
Dokken - Hunter (someone already mentioned this one, so I agree with them)
Poison - Look, But Don't Touch - don't remember hearing that one.
Poison - Fallen Angel - I think I heard this one once on the radio
Night Ranger - Sister Christian - heard this one only once. Not sure, too drunk to remember.
Metallica - One - I'm surprised that the local Heavy Metal station never plays this one.
Quiet Riot - Cum On, Feel the Noize - heard this one twice, but then they never played it again
Lou Gramm - Lost Boys Theme
Roger Daltrey - Don't Let the Sun (Go Down on Me) - obviously not Elton John's version.
Well, that's all I can really come up with for now. Oh, well.
------------------
Metal is the greatest thing ever. Never forget that.
sarasunshine 12-31-00, 09:20 PM Here's my lost eighties hits list
Dancin in heaven-Q Feel (from the movie Girls just want to have fun)
Breakin'-ollie and jerry
Nothin gonna break my stride-Mathew Wilder
Just can't get enough-Depeche mode
Method of modern love-Hall and Oates
Fools Paradise-Me'lisa Morgan
Hello Again-The Cars
Young Guns(go for it)-Wham (from the movie sixteen candles)
djdaffy1227 1-05-01, 12:22 AM Just a comment on some of the songs listed.
"Summer rain" was a top 20 hit in 1990. I believe a lot of the hard rock listed also was 90's. let's not forget that hard rock was only a small part of the 80's.
I find it hard to believe "Sister Christian" "Cum on feel the noize" and "Hazy shade of winter" are on this list because I hear them all the time.
"Cum on feel the noize" and "Dead man's party" are two of the most requested songs on the 80's show I host.
Speaking of Oingo Boingo, what about "weird scirnce". Speaking of Scandal, what about "Goodbye to you". Speaking of "Tragedy" what about the song of the same name by John Hunter who sounds remarkably like Mick Jagger.
"Never say goodbye" was the song I got my first kiss to.
Here's a list of songs I only hear when I play them at home but loved in the 80's
"Right between the eyes" by Wax
"Him" by Rupert Holmes
"Modern day Delilah" by Van Stevens
"Crazy in the night (barking at airplanes)" by Kim Carnes
"Crazy in love" by Kim Carnes
"Boogie down Bronx" by Freeze Force and Mann Parrish
"Yo! little brother" by Nolan Thomas
"Dear Mr. Jesus" by Power Source and Sharon Batts
There are too many others to even think about off hand like this
Metalfan!! All of those songs were popular and overplayed!! Especially Metallica's "One", and Night Ranger's "Sister Christian" ...Man I hated that song, and they played it like crazy!!!
Also.. Dokken's "Dream Warriors", and Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noise"... Both played quite a bit...
Metalfan83 1-07-01, 04:05 AM Hmmm, well, like I said before, I come from a - very - dead end town. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
------------------
Okay, anyone who sings "Seventeen" to me because of my age gets hit over the head with my laptop!
trishmrn 1-08-01, 10:49 AM Here's a few more to add...
Don't Pay the Ferryman...Chris Deburgh
Screaming in the Night....Krokus
Fine Fine Day...Tony Carey
Oh my God! "Don't Pay The Ferryman" by Chris De Burgh! I completely forgot about that song. I saw the video a couple years ago on VH-1 when they did an all 80's day or something.
87 Shark 1-10-01, 04:30 AM Here's a few just off the top of my head;
Call Me Names by Joan Armatrading
Party Weekend by Joe "King" Carrasco
Just a Gigolo by Barbie and the Kens, nothing like the song David Lee Roth does but sounds a lot like the B-52s
Five foot One by Iggy Pop
Secret Seperation by The Fixx
Digital Display by Ready for the World
Birth, School, Work, Death by The Godfathers
She Sheila by The Producers
Call it Love by Poco
Good lists everyone. Hey Poison PJ "Sticky Side Up" from Steelheart came out in the 90's, but its still cool. I have another 90's band that just missed the "good music era" - Blackfish, they have a killer song called "I don't care", 1991 I think.
jukebox30 1-10-01, 02:05 PM Anybody remember a band in 1986 called Little America?. They had a song or "hit" entitled "Walk on Fire". The chorus went like this, "I'd walk on fire for you, anything you want me to, I'd walk on fire for you, still so in love with you" Does anybody know this one?
Sal Collaziano 1-10-01, 02:44 PM Just wanna say "Welcome" to our new members! This thread seems to attract a lot of attention. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Welcome, welcome, welcome. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

NewRomantic 1-17-01, 08:17 AM Hello.
I suppose each music market is going to be different, but here in Australia, we ( and correct me if I'm wrong you Aussies out there!) didn't hear these ones much :
1. Not The Loving Kind / The Twins. (1984).
(The Twins were a German synth band - fairly typical style of this period, if newromantisim is your thing).
2. Run Runaway / Slade. (1984).
3. Endless Road / Time Bandits.
(What year was this recorded? If I was to guess I'd say 1985-1986. It sounds very American mid eighties you know like Starship's We Built this city. I had never heard of the Time Bandits until recently.)
4. Classic / Adrian Gurvitz. (1982).
5. Torch / Soft Cell. (1982-I think!!)
Yes, surprisingly Soft Cell had more than just one song. Did you all know that Tainted Love was actually a cover version? Some bird (oops! Sorry! That's an English / Australian word for 'young lady') called Gloria Jones and was first recorded in 1967. It's true. Ask your folks. The extended version of Torch is fantastic. It features some spoken words between Marc Armond and some bird (there I go again!) called Cindy Extacy which is all very camp, but funny.
4. Brand New Lover ; Lover Come Back To Me ; My Heart Goes Bang / all by Dead Or Alive. (1987 ; 1985 ; 1985).
...'but it all sounds the same...' Yes I know, but it was great wasn't it? I suppose it's all a matter of taste, but I loved that Stock, Aitken, and Waterman sound.
5. Male Stripper / Man To Man Meet Man Parish. (1987).
What a great catchy tune this was. Just don't repeat the lyrics if you live with your brother!

Don't try to live your life in one day...
outofplacechild 1-17-01, 11:17 PM I have a few songs that I think would have made big hits.
"Cool Zero" by Pat Benatar-From the 1988 album "Wide Awake In Dreamland"-This was an incredibly driving song. It grabs you from the get-go with the guitar work and lyrics that predate songs by artists like Hole.
"Cross My Heart" by Martika-from her 1989 self-titled debut-A great danceable number with a good beat and deliciously sweet lyrics.
"Pretender" by Madonna-from the 1984 album "Like A Virgin"-It's a song of defiance against being wronged by your former squeeze. That, and a terrific beat to boot.
Catch you on the B-side!
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

"If you don't give up and don't give in, you may just be okay"-Mike And The Mechanics
trishmrn 1-18-01, 10:33 AM Run Runaway...found it on Napster...LOVE IT
Here's one that very few have heard of "Go for a Soda"
by Kim Mitchell (I believe)
Ship of Fools...World Party
Life takes a Life....Jon Butcher Axis
To the person asking about the Inxs song...its called "Burn for you" off the album The Swing circa 1984. Great tune. Better album. It was released after the 1982 album "Shabooh Shoobah". An even better Cd.
theres so many good lost 80's tracks I won't even begin. I think the best one though is Tenderness by The spoons. Check it out.
outofplacechild, I agree, Cool Zero by Pat Benatar should have been a huge hit. I just downloaded that off Napster recently and thought that this should have been a top 10 hit, easily.
Yup! Those are some good songs. I feel the need to throw these in also:
Smooth up in ya' - Bulletboys
Break my Stride - Matthew Wilder
Radioactive - The Firm
Rough Boy - ZZ Top
Rock me Amadeus - Falco
It must be a geography thing because some of the songs mentioned were quite popular (if not <I>very</> popular) in Europe.... Eg. :
Falco - Rock Me Amadeus reached no. 1 (UK top 40)
Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride reached no. 4
Cyndi Lauper - True Colors reached no. 12
Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough reached no. 8
Wham! - Young Guns reached no. 3
I'm sure we missed out on a lot of really great music from the US during that time too! I hate to say it but I have no idea who some of the groups you guys mention are http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif
------------------
Life Is What Happens To You While You're Busy Making Other Plans
Yeah, I hear "Break My Stride" pretty often, as well as "Rock Me Amadeus". And True Colors was a #1 hit in the US.
Merydith1973 3-11-01, 07:51 PM What about "Nothin's gonna change my love for you" by Glen Mederios (I think?) he was from HI and won a talent contest or something. I think he's a sleeper one hit wonder...also "Fish for Life" by Mancrab..... I adore both of these songs!
------------------
So shines a good deed in a wery world.....Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka

Oh, yeah!!!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//OFFWALL.gif April Wine is a great choice. Now there is a band from the 80's that got nowhere near the appreciation they deserved.
------------------
If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
MondoMike2037 3-14-01, 11:52 AM Yeah,
April Wine is a great 80's band that didn't get the kudos they deserved. I agree with you. They're kinda been forgotten too. Don't hear too much about them anymore. They just kinda disappeared. Still, I like to rock is a great song. I can hear that kick ass bass line right now! Okay, I gotta get off this thing & go listen to it now! See what you started (LOL) But that's a good thing!
MONDO
No matter where you go...there you are

Jukebox Hero was another big song here.
Speaking of April Wine, they are playing here in May and I plan on going to see them
As well I'm going to see "Harlequin" (Thinking of you, Innocence)on thursday and Honeymoon Suite and Platinum Blonde the following week... A bunch of total 80's bands I can't wait!!!

(excuse me if some of these are 70s or 90s - I believe they are all 80s tunes!)
Sparkles
djdaffy1227 4-17-01, 11:17 PM I think Sparklescl is still in her teens. Many of those songs went top 10 in the U.S. with many of them going to #1. I'm not trying to be mean but none of those songs are forgotten or lost. (except maybe Kate Bush)
Here are more to add to my list.
Let's hang on-Barry Manilow (remake of Four Seasons hit)
Sequel-Harry Chapin (sequil to his hit "Taxi")
Still in Saigon-Charlie Daniels Band
Sea of heartbreak-Poco (remake of Don Gibson's 1961 country hit)
Space age whiz kids-Joe Walsh ("I need quarters!")
Alibis-Sergio Mendes
Escalator of life-Robert Hazard

Had a dream (sleeping with the enemy)-Roger Hodgson (lead singer of Supertramp)
Desert Moon-Dennis DeYoung (lead singer of Styx)
Girls with guns-Tommy Shaw (also with Styx)
Stacy-Fortune
I could go on and on.
I would also like to set the record straight about Glenn Medeiros, he was not a one hit wonder. He went to #1 in 1990 with "She ain't worth it" with the help of Bobby Brown and he went to #32 in 1990 with "All I'm missing is you (a forgotten 90's track)
Sal Collaziano 4-18-01, 12:37 AM Sparkles is on the younger side for an 80s fan - but that 'younger' side is constantly growing here! Anyways, I noticed a few of the songs she mentioned were pretty popular over here too. But don't forget that they may not have been so popular where she is. Sometimes there's just no station around you that plays what counts!

Hi! Some great songs mentioned. "Without the Night" by
Winger never really took off. How about "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Madonna? "Heaven's On Fire" by
Kiss and "Heaven Tonight" by Yngwie Malmsteen. Of course, these last two are more metal mania songs than
pop or top 40. Mr. Brownstone by GNR definately got ripped!!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00happy.gif
------------------
No Way!!!!
A lot of great songs mentioned on this topic esp. Marillion and Ultravox. Didn't someone mention Cabaret Voltaire, too? I forget, but they were great!
I thought I would add a few of my favorites that didn't get a lot of airplay here in Fla. on the radio, although some of the clubs played them...
Haysi Fantayzee - Shiny Shiny
INXS - Don't Change(great video/song=no airplay)
King's X - It's Love(Can't remember if this was in the 80's or 90's...oh well, I included it anyway)
Public Image Ltd. - World Destruction(Fantastic Song with Johnny Rotten and Afrikan Bambata)
Toto - 99
Sammy Hagar - Baby It's You
Donny Iris - Ah Leah (The BEST, but no airplay around here)
Crowded House - Mean to me
Aerosmith - Remember (not an Aerosmith fan, but love this song!)
The Babys - Change (remember the video when she is on the ledge?)
Go West - We Close Our Eyes (they were cute, too!)
Fixx - Are we Ourselves? (love the bass line)
Ozzy Osbourne - Tonight(softer side of him with great guitar)
And anything by Ministry off their album "With Sympathy"(phenomenal songs all the way through the album-get them on Napster if you can).
Also, anything by the Cure and Violent Femmes. They only EVER played those in the clubs in Tampa. Radio ignored them...in the case of the Femmes I can understand with the subject matter in most of their songs.
Sorry if I have mentioned songs that are very familiar to you. Florida is very behind a lot of the nation-even today.
My tastes are very eclectichttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//GOOFY.gif, but let me know what you think!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00wink.gif

I believe "Remember" was done by someone else first and Aerosmith's is a remake. Let us not forget 80's hair bears Bon Jovi and "Without Love" and Night Ranger with "Four in the Morning".

No Way!!!!
You are right Puleeze...that was a cover tune by Aerosmith. Funny how I only like the songs they did that were remakes eg. Remember and Come Together.

djdaffy1227 4-24-01, 02:55 PM Remember (walking in the sand) was a #5 hit in 1964 for the shangri-las and a #43 hit in 1979 for Louis Goffin and only went to #67 for Aerosmith in 1980 (such a shsme because they did it very well)
Hmm... Well, here's some (80s or the beginning of the 90s):
Dare - Into The Fire (and almost every other song by Dare)
Bad English - Forget Me Not
Bonfire - The Price of Loving You (and others)
T.N.T. - 10,000 Lovers & others
Bon Jovi - Love Is War (demo)
Giuffria - Radio
Magnum - Soldier of The Light
White Sister - Promises
Pretty Maids - Savage Heart
There for now... gotta get some sleep. Hopefully I'll become a regular visitor.. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Giuffria is an excellent mention, Igel! I downloaded "Call to your Heart" not too long ago on Napster and I had forgotten how good they were. I will have to download the one you mention also. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00delite.gif

Iluvthe80s 5-04-01, 05:44 AM I remembered this 80's song the other day when I was listening to the American Top 40 80's Flashback show. It's called Fine, Fine Day by Tony Carey. That was the first time I heard it since the 80's. Here are a few that never seem to get airplay:
Girls-Dwight Twilley
Beat's So Lonely-Charlie Sexton
Whirly Girl-OXO
Slipping Away-Dave Edmunds
Outta Mind,Outta Sight-The Models
I had thought of a bunch earlier, but now my mind went blank.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//uhoh2.gifMaybe I will think of more later.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//stareup.gif
djdaffy1227 5-04-01, 11:46 AM "A fine fine day" what a great song. If you're looking for a copy it is available on the Barry Scott C.D. "The lost 45's of the 70's and 80's" volume one. Toney Carey was with Rainbow and Planet P. Remember his other solo songs. "The first day of summer""West coast summer nights" and "I won't be home tonight"
Hey ILUV80s - Charlie Sexton!!!! Love Beats So Lonely and the entire CD, great choice!!!

ElectricYouth 4-12-02, 07:14 PM Quite frankly, I think that Debbie Gibson's "Staying Together" should have made it into the top 10 at least. I mean all her other songs up to that point (Only In My Dreams, Out Of The Blue, Shake Your Love) had made it into the top 5, and Foolish Beat hit Number 1, but that song was just as peppy and never made it. I also think that "Electric Youth" should have gone higher than just number 11. I mean, it's an excellent song with a great message.
