View Full Version : Question about Yaz
sarasunshine 8-30-01, 11:22 PM I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right thread but here goes...Was there more than one group in the 80's named Yaz? As far as I know Yaz only had 2 albums out. One from 1982 and one from 1983. But then there is a song called "Move Out" by Yaz but it doesn't appear on either album and sounds a bit different than Alf the female lead singer of Yaz. I'm just curious about this...any help would be appreciated :)I'm probably mistaken about something here.
wavemaster 8-30-01, 11:26 PM As far as I know, there was only one band named Yaz, if you mean the duo Alison Moyet and Vince Clark.
They normally went under Yazoo outside the US, that could be confusing.
"Move Out" is also originally Yaz.
sarasunshine 8-30-01, 11:35 PM Thanx wavemaster :) I just looked up some info on them and the song "move out" that I was thinking about is actually called "situation" ...so that's what was confusing..i had the name of the song wrong.
wavemaster 8-30-01, 11:42 PM You are right...confused it also...damn Alzheimer :D
sarasunshine 8-31-01, 10:26 AM hehe...yeah..senior moment..I get those too..LOL :D
NewRomantic 8-31-01, 10:16 PM Hi Sara,
Besides Yazoo, there was olso, Yaz And The Plastic Population. Their big hit was the early house track, "The Only Way Is Up", from 1988. Remember that one?
Is Yazoo called Yaz in the States cos of the town called Yazoo?
What is youre favourite Yazoo song?
sarasunshine 8-31-01, 10:51 PM "Don't Go" is my favorite song by Yaz or Yazoo...I believe they had to change their name in the states because that name already belonged to a company or something. But the name was already taken and copyrighted so they had to drop the 2 o's at the end. I don't think I remember Yaz and The Plastic Population.
RetroMan 9-01-01, 12:56 AM on the 'Best Of' release of Yazoo there are some great bonus remixes - and there is a TERRIFIC remake of their song 'Only You' which remains true to the original, and it has a string section added to it and it actually sounds amazing for a re-do :)
sarasunshine 9-01-01, 01:35 AM Yeah retroman, I was looking at that on CD Now and was thinking about buying it. I'm going to have to pick that up :)

NewRomantic,
that Yaz was actually spelled Yazz and had nothing to do with Yazoo. I have some slight doubts about whether Alf Moyet or Vince Clark ever needed to be produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman... :D
In Germany, she could also quote another Top 10 chart notation with "Stand Up For Your Love Rights" (The Only Way Is Up made it to #3), and if my memory doesn´t completely fail me again (see above... :o ), she had released a few other singles in the early 90s which weren´t noticed very much here.
RetroMan 9-01-01, 07:26 AM Yeah, go for it Sara - it's a fantastic album and will bring back a lot of memories if you haven't heard the songs in a while.
Yeah Wavemaster, I remember 'Yazz' being very
'Stock/Aitken/Waterman' (as pretty much everything else was around that time) - I remember the lead singer's hair was really white and cut quite short.
80sTrivia 9-02-01, 12:24 AM This is a coincidence... I just found an old cassette tape the other day, and "The Only Way is Up" by Yazz & the Plastic Population was on the tape. I, too, thought that Yazz & the Plastic Population were an extention, of sorts, of Yaz. Of course, Vince Clark was already in Erasure by then, so I should have known better. I was also confused about the identities of the various bands with similar names, but Alison Moyet is one of my all-time favorite singers. My fave song of hers is the wonderfully soulful "Invisible" from 1985, when she went solo.
Yazz also had a hit with Aswad - a cover of Paul Carrack's "How Long". She was the vocalist on the Coldcut hit Doctorin' The House. She did very well in Scandinavia with the single Fine Time as well.
Sonny Burnett 9-03-01, 10:53 PM I have the CD "The Best of Yaz". My favorite is 'Goodbye Seventies'. Could be a theme song for this forum.
"Upstairs at Eric's" is one of my favorite albums. Alf has an incredible voice.
an80snut 9-05-01, 05:26 PM Love Yaz ("In My Room" is phenonmenal.) Love Yazz (still have a tape made in 1989 from a college radio station that had the song in heavy rotation.) Amazing how the music has changed so much. :( Oh well, here's a biography for both bands from my site.

I agree. This is a classic album. "In My Room" is a fav of mine and "Too Pieces" is just synthpop at it's best. :) :)
I always got their name confused with Yazzoo too.
Yazoo,
Vince Clark, previously of Depeche Mode adn Allison Moyet. Brought out two albums, "Upstairs at Erics" and "You and me Both"
Vince Clarke also made a single with Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey under the bandname The Assembly. They scored a #4 UK chart hit in 1984 with the song Never Never. If you don't know this song, GET IT! It's as good as anything Vince made back then.
In 1985 Vince Clarke collaborated with Paul Quinn for the single One Day. He wrote this song with Morgan McVey, who originally wanted them to record Looking Good Diving and not One Day. McVey went on to release Looking Good Diving himself, but with limited success. He then re-wrote the song - and it was later released as Buffalo Stance by Neneh Cherry.
Greenway88 8-07-03, 07:51 AM Great discussion of Yaz (Yazoo). I enjoyed pretty much all of Yaz's music. Some great songs I haven't seen mentioned are State Farm, Nobody's Diary, Winter Kills, Mr. Blue, Ode To Boy and the annoying but still amazing I Before E Except After C.
I bought the Yaz (Yazoo) greatest hits at the local Barnes and Nobles, it is great. I like another song not mentioned called "only you". Yaz had a cool sound and they probably introduced many to the techno sound. I would recommend getting Yaz, it is a great addition to my massive music library known as "the wall of sound". I am sure that many Xchangers are like myself and have a diverse and eclectic collection that time does not permit to enjoy (time).
Totally awesome, gag me with a spatula!
Vince Clarke has also collaborated with Martin Ware of Heaven 17 and made some weird synthy tunes. He also produced an album called The Peter Pan Project by an artist called Marlowe. All that stuff has the signature Vince Clarke sound - right down to the Alf-like vocals  Check out a song called "Calling All Destroyers" and it will totally sound like a Yazoo or Erasure song!
