What did your family think of you & your goth/punk music, clothes, makeup & friends?

Most of my family hated it. Except for my mom, cuz she was/is the coolest. ;)

When I was in 7th grade, I made my dad take me & my friend to see Psychedelic Furs and Siouxsie & the Banshees. He about had a heart attack when he saw all the freaks standing outside waiting to get in. :D He begged me not to EVER wear a safety pin through my ear and shave my head. Of course - I didn't listen :p

They never had a problem with my friends, because they were usually tamer than me when it came to hair, make-up & clothing.

I never dressed or acted the part but loved the music. My family just chalked it up as another style of music that I listened to. I love it all!!

My family thought I was depressed all the time, which was sooo far from the truth!! My Mom loved some of the music that I listened to, she mostly liked The Cure & Depeche Mode :D But she couldn't handle everything else!

I suited up on occasion, but it wasn't something I wore everyday to make a personal statement about youth, individuality, and rebelliousness, so most everyone knew it wasn't the clothes that made me who I was. I was too tired and lazy to go through the ritual of getting made-up. I love all the music through and through, though :) My mom loves Depeche and The Cure too :D

After a while my family got used to it.

My Mom is still not used to it! She met a couple of my friends who are closer to her age, who were also huge GLJ fans, and I heard my Mom say "I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A PHASE!!" My friend Kayt explained to her that it was not :lol:

Good ol' Mom STILL tells me that I wear too much black!

My Mother/Paula :mad:... Hated the Music and my Yellow shorts and Pink Izod Shirts..
My Grand parents however just blew it off as a phase........

My parents thought all my trends were goofy. I was always into fashion and trends so they just took lots of picts so they could be sure to tease me about it later in life. :lol:

no, my mom thought you were great. (It was in Atlanta, with my step-mom and dad.) You and I were Duranies, but we were what, 14? lol We didn't look very strange. :) Remember Damon and Bruce? That was pretty weird. :lol:

They were typically horrified. I am like no one else in my family. They are all a bunch of Righ Wing religious fanatics and the only thing that saved me was that I grew up in So. Cal and not Marshall Texas where they all come from. I'm not ragging on Texas as a whole, just my hometown.

I caught my mum nicking some of my records! And my studded belt!

My Grandfather wanted to know where i got my Shirts from!

I never did the peircings or the make-up (despite having one of the largest stage make-up collections in the area!)

I've got a friend who is into the Goth thing - big time. But my parents don't mind her. Or the music, for that matter.

When I shaved half my hair off, my parents cringed but weren't too worried. When I hung out with skaters who had mohawks, they were fine with it. When I started shopping at Goodwill instead of Macy's, they were downright ecstatic. When I started blasting "Sex and Violence" in the bathroom as I was getting ready for school, they were a little concerned. But the angry punk thing wasn't really me, and I think they knew it. The attitude was just a phase, in my case, but I still listen to the music (but mostly the more melodic punk, like All, Op Ivy, 7 seconds, etc.).

I did so many things. I hacked my hair short , spiked it and bleached it blonde. After that everyone in my family loved it :laugh: I sported a tail for awhile and dyed it orange. :yesnod: Then I got bored with that and hacked it off. I was the only one on my street who dressed that way. Everyone else was ROCKERS!!! Then I met this really gorgeous hunk and we got together, and well after that the neighborhood knew us as being outrageous with our hair and dress. ( I MISS THOSE DAYS!!!) Oh Yeah I had a trench I used to wear a lot as well. :D

As a footnote, I went out to lunch with my mom yesterday and asked her point blank what she had thought at the time about the music I listened to, clothes I wore, people I hung out with, etc. and she said, "Oh, I just thought it was a phase. You were our fifth child, it wasn't the first time we'd gone through something like that. To tell you the truth, I was more worried about your sister wearing boys' clothes than I was about all your earrings and asymmetrical hairstyles." :lol:

I never did the Goth thing. I was heavy metal and classic rock till my senior year. Then I descovered club music and "happy pills" I've loved the club music ever since.

You kids wear too much black :tsk: Git some sunlight and color in youse :tsk:
