With Morrissey and Robert Smith hating eachother and Smith fans hating Cure fans, lets end this fued right now. Which band is better?

I voted for the Cure, but i do like the smiths too!

I've never known a Cure fan to "hate" a Smith's fan & vice versa. But based on musical talent, I would say The Cure is a better band, IMO.

I can do a MEAN Morrissey impersonation. BUTT The CURE Rules!!!!

The Smiths. No doubt I am more inclined to listen to their music more often than The Cure and I know the lyrics to a lot of their songs.

I like both The Cure and The Smiths, but I'm more partial to The Cure.

I do really enjoy the Cure and have seen them several times in concert but as far as being a better band I had to go with the Smiths. If the Smith's had had the longevity of the Cure I think they would have been much bigger.

I would have to go with The Cure.

My vote definitely goes to The Cure! What a great band. I liked some of the Smith's material, but I found Morrissey and his tortured, cereberal angst to be a bit too much sometimes... :laugh:

Really? Even though I like both bands, I always though Robert Smith & Morrissey had the personalities of a box of rocks.

What I meant to say was that Morissey was more intriguing than smith

The Cure, most deffinately :thumb: I saw them live back in 2000 and it was the best concert I've ever attended - an absolute unforgettable experience

As much as I love The Smiths, I have to say that I love The Cure even more!

those are my 2 favourite bands...but i'd have to say in my opinion that the cure, musically speaking, are more talented...but, you can't beat morrissey's lyrics!

I voted for The Smiths. Although they are sometimes seen as "less accessible", Jonny Marr's upbeat music contrasts brilliantly with Morrissey's downbeat vocals. In my view, The Smiths music was on another level completely. I still like The Cure though :)

Let's just say that if it weren't for The Smiths and Morrissey, I wouldn't be here on the xchange talking about my love for 80s music :D

I voted for teh Cure. I think they have much more variety in their songs. I don't mind the Smith but somehow I grew bored of their music very fast. Well, Panic, thats the song I still love to listen to over and over again, but that's it.

I didnt know that Cure fans and Smiths fans were hating each others? Well,both bands have INCREDIBLE albums and both did much impact in the music industry of the 80s. But when it comes to personnal choice, it was a tough decision to make. I love both of these bands, The Cure have so much variety, a beautiful body of work(Faith,Pornography,Disintegration,etc.) They will always be one of my favorite band BUT The Smiths gets my vote.

I don't really care about the personality of Morrissey, what matter to me is the music and here it is the strong point. Marr and Morrissey were like the Lennon/McCarthney for the new generations, a little more sad perhaps but hell they were so great. Every album is a masterpiece of guitar pop-rock. There is a light that never goes out is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. I sure hope that I could have a time machine to back in time to see them live. My girlfriend really don't like the voice of Morrisey so she is quite sad because I listen to them very often... :happy:

In the end the legacy of both of these bands will live on forever!

Its hard for me to compare the two because they were so different. I loved The Smiths but The Cure connected with me on a more emotional level and although they could make me wince sometimes, overall their catalog is nothing but quality.

The Top will always be my favorite album by them...pure masterpiece.

That is a great one for sure, if I had to choose it would probably be 'Shake Dog Shake'. They never made an album quite like this one before or after it.

I decided to pick up the "Singles" album by The Smiths. I am blown away. Before the only song I really knew was "Girlfriend in a Coma" and I though the lyrics were kinda stupid. Now I am becoming a Smiths fan. I still LOVE The Cure, but the Smiths are catching up with them :)

Right on! If I may suggest albums for you to buy from The Smiths in a particular order...

The Queen Is Dead
Louder Than Bombs (B-sides and rarities but it pretty much stands alone as an album in its own right)
Meat Is Murder
Strangeways Here We Come
The Smiths (First album, very mellow compared to the rest)

I only suggest this order because as a new fan it may help you get into them more if you start with their strongest material...imho of course.

Morrissey put out some quality solo albums too, my favorites are...

Viva Hate
Bona Drag (Collects his singles and b-sides but is very strong overall)
Your Arsenal

I don't think I could choose or say who's better. They both have such unique styles and some of my fav songs.

the Top is great, but I love Head on the Door, and the Singles from the Cure. Esp. the B sides.

There wasn't really a whole lot of Cure songs that I really enjoyed, so I went with The Smiths

This was hard for me since I have liked both over the years, I did pick The Cure because I too have been able to connect to the lyrics more so then The Smiths.

First of the Gang to Die is a wicked song, and I believe the album's 2nd single. Saw him perform it on the now retired Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn. He still sounds good singing live :thumb:

The cure i clicked with instantly, first hear them with Hanging gardens and wondered 'what the F*** is that, I Like!'

The Smiths Took me a long time to get into them, This charming man left me feeling 'what the F*** is that' but no 'I Like' and still took a couple of years before i cottoned on to them.

I went with the Cure!! I used to listen to them all the time (still put it on once in awhile)

Never a Smiths fan but really like the Cure! "Just Like Heaven","Friday I'm In Love" and the glaringly missing from their greatest hits CD "Fascination Street" and "Pictures of You"! :thumb:

Smiths are good, but The Cure just have too many great tunes... had to vote Cure on this one :cool:
