It’s been over three years since U2 re-established themselves as a decent rock band with All That You Can’t Leave Behind, meaning it’s due time that the band release a new album. According to Billboard.com, the band are about to set the wheels in motion by going into the studio next week.
The biggest news is that famed producer Steve Lillywhite will produce the entire album. If the band were re-examining their roots with All That You Can’t Leave Behind, this new album could spell a full-fledged return to form, seeing as Lillywhite was the principle producer on the band’s 1980 debut album, Boy. Lillywhite also produced the group’s sophomore disc, October, as well as 1983’s War.
Since then, Lillywhite has worked intermittently with U2, helping out with 1987’s The Joshua Tree, 1991’s Achtung Baby and All That You Can’t Leave Behind, but hasn’t produced another complete album.
In addition to working with U2, Lillywhite has had his name attached to records by Morrissey, XTC, late ex-wife Kristy MacColl, The Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones, The Psychedelic Furs, Dave Matthews Band, The Las, Peter Gabriel, Counting Crows and many others.
U2’s new album with Lillywhite is expected to be released by the end of 2004.
