alright. i have this song on one of my mom's old mixtapes, and i love it, but i have NO idea who sings it, or anything about it. i have no idea of the year, but new order's "perfect kiss", joy division's "love will tear us apart", and omd's "if you leave" are on the tape as well, if that helps. the song's fairly electronic, with a male singer, and the chorus goes "how long must i wait, before i understand. how long before i hold you in my hand". there's a few other lyrics, but the tape is so old that i honestly can't tell what he's saying. he says something about "love is just a devil's game", though. i have a feeling that it's a european artist, because my mom mostly listened to this one station back then that played european artists. um...so if anybody at all could help me, i'd be eternally greatful. thanks in advance http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Vaguely familiar. Help me out. High or low voice, slow or fast tempo and anything else you can come up with. I have different tunes going thru my head but need more input.

oooh, now i'm all excited. i've posted this all over the place, and so far nobody's even said it sounded familiar. let's see, the voice isn't low or high..just normal, i guess. fast tempo..you can definately dance to it (hee). um, let's see. i'm going from memory here, because the tape's so old i'm afraid to play it. um, it's mostly electronic, but there's a guitar layered on top that just plays this "dun dun, dun dun" thing. every once in awhile it sorta changes to this thing that's completely different (and very electronic), and that's what the chorus is like. i *think* some other words are:

and i tried not to fall,
and again and again, i've loved you like before..

chorus..(how long must i wait for you to..understand, etc).

i wish i could make some sort of a soundfile out of it, but i don't think i can.

thanks for any help you can give me, thoughhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Check your soft ware. If you have a mic on the computer it may be possible. If you also have a dual cassette recorder you can make a copy of it. Even if the original tape breaks, it can be fixed. I'm still thinking so don't lose contact or faith. I also have a friend that may have some ideas.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

ok! i made a really hideously bad recording of it, and it's here:

http://www.psycho-jello.com/charmingdelusions/sounds/mysterysong.mp3

ironically, it sounds better on here than on the tape. hm. but does that sound familiar?

Approximately what year are we talking about here. you said your mother listened to it. we don't know how your mother is. what about asking your mother?

ok, it does sound like howard jones. hmm...i've listened to soundclips of nearly every one of his songs from that era, and none sound familiar, though. but i could've missed some...

my mom's almost 50 now. heh. in the late 70's - early/mid 80's, when me and my sister were really little, what she'd do is tape all these songs that she liked off the radio. she used really cheap tapes, and never labelled them, because she didn't think that she'd listen to them past a few months. plus, she didn't know who sang half the songs herself. so now, 20 years later, we're all in LOVE with these tapes, and nobody has any idea who any of them are. kinda funny. i've grilled her about this song, but she can't remember.

i'd say that it's from probably 85-86. i could be way off there, though. what year was "if you leave" getting a lot of radio play? cause that one's on there *twice*, so i'd say it's from that year. plus, by '87-'88, my mom has pretty much stopped taping.

hey twice, I am going to give it a listen over the weekend since the company "I.S." police decided that we didn't need sound cards in our computers. What do they know? I'll get back with you monday. tell your mom that she is supposed to write things like that down.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif I am her age so there is a good possibility I may know it.

Okay... this song is driving me mad!! If it is Howard Jones.. (which I could swear it is by the keyboards and vocals), I can't figure out the name of that song... I have all of his greatest Hits albums... and its not one of them.. so.. its either a very obscure Howard Jones song.. or it's someone else.. (Don't mind me, I'm thinking aloud)... I can honestly say I have never heard this song.. but it is so convenient to have a sound clip of it!! That was pretty cool that you thought to do that! Don't give up... I am frantic to find out the name and artist of that song now too.. and if I don't find it.. I'm sure someone will...

If you ever find out elsewhere.. be sure to post it and let me know!!!!!!

Hi guys, I too have listened to the clip and don't recognise it as being a Howard Jones tune. I was initially drawn to Talk Talk (80s British group), but am not certain, will trawl through my old vinyl (mmmm, vinyl...) over the coming days and see what I can pick up from that (600+ albums/12"s, mostly dating from 1980 to 1987 and covering a broad spectrum of music types).

It's definitely not Howard Jones. I've listened to the clip as well, but I don't recognize it. The voice does sound vaguely familiar, though...

Hello.

I can't really help with this one. 'If You Leave' and 'Perfect Kiss' were both from 1985 and your song sounds very mid '80's and European. The mid '80's possibly?? Though if your mother taped songs from the radio, it could be anything!
Boy that doesn't help does it?!
Good luck!

I agree that this is not Howard Jones. I believe it's a band called Ultravox, I'm not sure. I will check my supply of their songs and see if it's one them.

Definately NOT Ultravox... I just listened to about 20 of their songs.. and it's not even the same "style" of music... (too many guitars and not enough keyboards)

I'm still on the hunt for the answer, though!!!
