You know, after years of being a DD fan, it is hard to say, "Damn, that sucks" but it seems more and more, that is the reaction I am having. The new single from the upcoming "Pop Trash" CD is called "Someone else not me" and although it is a DECENT song, I don't know what the hell they were thinking when they decided to make this the first single. They are LOSING THERE MINDS! I have heard the new video is HORRID! I have a copy of "Pop Trash" (Due out next month) and all in all, it is a great CD. I am just dismayed at the marketing. If these guys ever plan to break again, they will not do so with this rubbish. It is bad enough that they will forever be saddled with the "boy band, pretty boys of the 80's" reputation. I can only say, IDIOTS! I am so disappointed. Oh well, this is not new, this is a trend for DD. Make a great record, release a terrible single. No wonder they are going down hill.

Well, you seem to like most of the other album. Hopefully the next song they release will be something you like. Maybe they are trying to market to the younger audience. Who knows - it may work well for them. Look at Metallica (I hope Not Man isn't looking!)...

Raine, you're right. The new single is not all that. It is a very poor comeback for Duran Duran. I'm extremely disappointed. It unfortunately looks like a trend for them to release the not so good songs as singles. Your review of the rest of the album sounds promising though. I hope I can agree with you on that as well.

I hope so too, Flixfan! The album is actually very good, all in all. It is more of a "wedding album" sound than "Medazzeland" (Which I did NOT like.)

hehe Not Man is always watching and Raine is ignoring me! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Well! hehe Hey, think about it though. What I was saying is this.. Even though Metallica is not playing what their original fans like, they are striking a chord with young people. Maybe Duran Duran is doing the same thing, just with their single instead of an entire album...

I wish you were right Sal, but this single is not going to move Duran Duran in any direction. The marketing of the single AND album...who am I kidding??...the LACK of marketing of the single and album, will not exactly promote this to anyone but the few hardcore Duranies. I think that they don't care anymore. They love their music and they don't need chart-positions. Artistic freedom when it is most obvious. But that is the beauty of being an adult fan. It is not important that we like every single song. It does not make the old albums sound any worse. Maybe next single??

Yeah, I hear ya. They're been there, done that, and had it all already. Maybe the drive is just not there anymore.. Atleast not like it once was...

The problem always lies with record sales though. When they left Capitol records, it took them YEARS to get anyone to give them the time of day. I believe the reason is because Capitol veiwed DD as "has beens" and never really marketed them AT ALL. There was no promotion at all for the band. So, when they left Capitol, no other record company would take any notice. Duran Duran? Are they still around? Thank god Hollywood records decided (after hearing demo's for Pop Trash) to give them a chance. If this album bombs, who will give DD another chance? I think the end of the road is in site, and it is sad as far as I am concerned!

What they need is another Ordinary World.

Well here's my little .02 on the matter. I do like the song "Someone Else Not Me" but not the radio edit. The video is horrible but the graphics are okay. IMHO the video doesn't match the song at all. Not enough movement and too much of the still image photography. The last time Duran Duran received any marketing whatsoever was with "The Wedding Album". I have (and still have) a bunch of the postcards and flyers that Capitol had sent out prior and during the release of that album. Then "Thank You" came around and no promotion there. The last thing I got from Capitol was a postcard announcement about Medazzaland and that was 3 years ago.

The main reason that the single won't go anywhere in the charts here is that it's not available in the US for purcase. You have to order it from outside like the UK or Japan. This is what initially worried me about it but I ended up getting so much flack for it that I gave up but I think I'm partly right. They should have released a more up tempo song like "Playing With Uranium" first to get their music back in the clubs and on the radio more frequently. I still haven't heard it here in St. Louis but I know one station has it.

One thing that I do know about Duran is their ability to attract new fans. Fans that are still in their teens. I met one a couple of weeks ago and she had checked out "Medazzaland" at her local library and fell in love with it. She's been a fan for about 3 years now. They also have the power to attract fans from back in the 80s too.

Every interview that I've seen where there was a quote from a record company exec. they sound very excited to have Duran on their label and want to do everything they can for them. But I'm all for seeing and not just reading about it. So we're going to have to do what we Duranies have been doing for years...wait and see.

I've gotta throw my pennies in also. I have heard a clip of the new single and as a fan, I think they are doing a Depeche Mode.

You see, the first single from each of Depeche Mode's albums starting with 1990's Violator broke from their formula. "Personal Jesus" was thickly guitar laden and an abuse of feedback. A great song but not what I'd call the best for a single (I preferred "Halo"). Songs Of Faith And Devotion's first single "I Feel You" again leaned on one guitar chord hook to break your thinking that they were going to write another "People Are People." "Barrel Of A Gun," from their last full release Ultra, suffers the same curse but shows a DM willing to experiment vocally.

So I see Duran's releasing of "Someone Else Not Me" as them trying to break the stereotype without releasing a full album of material that screams "Really! We've changed! Give us another listen!" I can't say it's a great move but I can see them trying to come into 2000 with a bang instead of whimper.

I think you're absolutely right about Depeche Mode. But I am not so sure about Duran Duran. The first single from a brand new album is supposed to spark interest for buying the album. All three Depeche Mode songs mentioned are energetic and powerful. I don't think they are great songs, but they all made me interested in hearing the rest. Depeche Mode uses virtually no marketing since they always believed that their songs didn't really need it. And that's why it's a brilliant idea to release the most powerful song from the album.

Duran Duran's first single is not THAT powerful (in my opinion). If I didn't know better I would probably not buy the album. And this is a band that needs marketing. The promo single has a sticker on it: "Listen to the new single from this great band". I guess a monkey in the mailroom came up with that marketing strategy for DJ's and radiostations. The new DD single is poor performance from the band as well as the record label.

Another unusual thing for DM is that they tend to release the single far in advance of the upcoming album to get you salivating and checking the stores early. I have to say that I still haven't heard it hit the radio nor seen the video (even though I did hear that it's been added to playlists for VH1 and MTV's 120 Minutes.) From the demo that I have heard of it, I entirely agree that it isn't the strongest track. What I do find intriguing is how entirely different and almost distanced from the other tracks I've heard on the album. I'll have to hear it when finally gets released to get a better evaluation.

I just finished my first listening of Pop Trash. I am amazed at how many different sounds this album contains. I will need to listen to it more to actually decide on my favourite songs, but this is far better than the previous album. I don't think this is a comeback album, but it sure sounds like DD is back on track. It reminds me of the wedding album, but it seems to lack instant hits like Ordinary World & Come Undone.

I love "Playing with Uranium" and "Last day on Earth". These two are ROCKING tunes! If they had only released "Playing with Uranium" as a first single. Even "Lava Lamp" would have been a better first single, IMHO. The album in general seems to be much more guitar laden than Medazzeland.
I disagree tho, Flixfan. I think "Lady Xanax" is a wonderful song and if givin a push, could be another "Ordinary World"

I think DD's best song since 1985 was "Electric Barbarella." Just my opinion, since it started to sound like their old, good stuff again.
