"Paging Doctor Scary B Moron to the child traumatization ward...."

Really bad show and tell (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04008/259129.stm)

That's just wrong. But this kind of thing happens in schools all the time - maybe not in this extremity, but when I was in 7th grade, we had an assembly slide-show, where the local police force had shown pictures of babies and children that were killed by drunk drivers. And the pics showed every gory detail. I know of many other students, besides my friends and I, that were so bothered by that, there were even some that had to leave, because they were getting sick. I understand that they were just trying to get us to not drink and drive, but I believe there would've been a better way of doing it. Point is, they say it's for the good of the child's education, and they hide behind that.

Scary :ill: That is just beyond inappropriate. If I was a parent of one of those children, I'd be having that jackass teacher removed from the school REAL quick!

HELLO!!!????

Okay, I'm opening the proverbial Pandora's Box here, but I feel the need to say this.

The man is NOT a moron. We are such bleeding hearts these days that what he did offends us!

In the 5th grade, we dissected a cows eye. Yes.... a real cow's eye. Cut it open and everything. It was gross, but we learned about a cow's eye.

In the 10th grade, we dissected worms and frogs. Yes.....real worms and frogs. Cut them open and everything. It was gross, but we learned about the anatomy of worms and frogs.

Care to ask about what I had to dissect in college? Yes, I learned about crickets, mussels, crawfish, etc....

Please...don't judge the teacher without the facts!!!!!!!

I agree. I think we are going overboard. Sure its probably not pretty to look at but its not like its gonna come out and bite you.

(mind you I couldn't even thought these things when I was in 10th grade.)

I think the parents are over reacting on this one.

I also dissected a cows eye & a worm, a frog, etc....

But my parents had to sign a permission slip allowing me to do so. I don't think these kids' parents knew what was going on until after the fact. Which is wrong, IMO.

Sorry, I just don't think that 5th graders (10 year olds) should be dissecting a HUMAN body part.

Yikes! I didn't get to human prosection until college - and it was a video! There's very few peeps who can handle the real thing, let alone 10 year olds. Hmmm. I think it would be better if they started with manuals and books first and then those who show a proficiency and a keen interest in the subject be allowed to study further by watching a video (and not surprisingly, we'd find that there's very very few 10 year-olds who can learn at that level). To demonstrate a dissected human arm is a bit unheard of in any 5th grade classroom and I cannot think what the learning value of that is. The teacher had the right sentiment - to teach - but didn't think the lesson through.

Dissecting small animals and animal parts is a far cry from human parts though... there's a BIG difference. Not something to just throw in front of kids. Books would suffice effectively enough... save the actual parts for college :p

Mr Vargas brought the kids to the morgue in Fast Times oh an Phoebe Cates simulated fellatio on a bananna in the cafateria... me on the other hand, we disected frogs and earth worms, and I found out inverted nipples didn't look like a bunt cake dish

No, there was no need to expose the kids to this--and then to be flabbergasted as to why the kids reacted the way they did....

We needed permission slips to dissect animals, and fortunately I wasn't made to do it. I don't think this is a matter of "bleeding hearts" here, it's a matter of respecting parent's wished for their children and having a clue about the maturity level of these kids.

I think these children were too young to witness something like this, for all anyone knew someone close to one of them may have just passed away or may suffer from nighmares etc.

Some sort of permission slip should have been signed by the parents to allow their children to witness this sort of thing in school.

I'm all for permission slips. Some kids may not be mentally ready for something like that. I would have been and I would have begged my parents to sign. In 10th grade advanced biology we dissected Frogs, Worms, Pig fetusus, and Kitten fetuses. While parents didn't have to sign permission slips we could choose whether or not we wanted to do the dissection or read about it in the biology book. I choose not on the kitten but yes for the others.
