I always heard the song "Perfect Way", but could never figure out who sang it. Finally one day in 93 I found out who they were.
Poor one hit wonders..

That's one of those songs where you'll know it when you hear it..I didn't even know the title of the song much less who sang it.
I don't even know the words to this one. I think I should try CD now just to hear a sample of it..if it's even on there.

You have to start selling your compilations. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif hehe Well, I am just getting into the habit of buying CDs. So soon enough, I will run across that song! And many others that I will hear for the first time - or just not in a long time...

Scritti Politti is definately worth a little more attention. The band had hits with The Word Girl, Wood Beez and Oh Patti. They sound alot like Aztec Camera, ABC, Heaven 17 and similar eighties bands. Their leadsinger Green Gartside went solo in the nineties. Unfortunately for him - he kept the eighties sound and was soon forgotten. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, those songs with the 80s sound might be hits right now. The 80s sound has been making a comeback since last Summer! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

I disagree with Flix on this one. Scritti Politti was one of the best acts of the 80s in my book. Perfect Way is a great song. I wish they would have followed up with Absolute instead of Wood Beez. Cupid and Psyche '85 is one of my favorite 80s albums. Their second, Provision, was very good, too. It featured a collaboration with Roger (of the R&B group Zapp) called Boom! There She Was that is awesome. Also Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry for the Lover Boy) is really good as well. Check it out sometime.

I liked the sound of Scritti Politti! "The Perfect Way" is a perfect pop confection, although I happen to like the undecipherable "Wood Beez" better! I always thought Green had a unique vocal style!

I think Cupid & Psyche is a really good cd. I like The Word Girl very much.

I also liked the Provision cd. I did not like Green Gartside when he went solo.

I think you read the topic wrong, Greenway. I think Flix is a Scritti Politti fan too. He just did not like the solo cd from Green Gartside. I hope he is a fan, because he gave me Cupid and Psyche on cd. ;) :D

Pippi,

You're right, my bad Flix.

Another great song from Cupid and Psyche '85 is Hypnotize.

OK, maybe one of you can answer this question. There is a Scritti Politti song that I can't remember the name of, and it's been bugging me for a couple of weeks. The best way to describe it is that the song "Men in Black" sounds a lot like it.

I liked Cupid & Psyche 85 too. Besides "Perfect Way," my other favorite is "Absolute" (particularly the remix version on the CD).

Mookie: Is that the original MiB movie back in 97?

Yes...the song by Will Smith titled "Men in Black"

I keep digging through some of my CDs hoping to find where I heard the Scritti Politti song. Maybe it's on a cassette.

It is driving me nuts! It has that same intro as MIB.

The song that underlies Men in Black is Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen.

Scritti were pretty big here in the UK during 1985, and I think that the hit 'Word Girl' does sum up the period very well.

David Green has a very unique voice, and I recommend that you guys check out the latest album, 1999's 'Anomie & Bonhomie'. It earnt rave reviews and I thought it was a great comeback.

Provision was actually Scritti's third album, their First was "Songs to Remember" On Rough Trade Records, then Cupid & Psyche, followed by Provision.
Then in 1999 he came back with Anomie & Bonhomie which has about four good tracks on it, but didn't sell well and isn't comparable to his earlier work.

Scritti Politti were not one hit wonders in my book. they had a succession of catchy singles in the mid-eighties, all of relatively high quality! although they tended to sound somewhat alike. Green Gartside was known as a pop intellectual, so he added an oscure lyrical element to his synth-pop sound. The Word Girl was one of my favorites, reminiscent of classic Culture Club.

Scritti was basically Green Gartside's own project, his last album was on his own. Apart from doing a track on BEF's "Music of quality & distinction", what solo material did he release? I would hazard a guess at none.

I agree, "Boom! There she was" is my favorite. Did it make the charts though? It was played alot here in Houston back in 1988.

Who recalls Scritti's 1991 collaboration with Shabba Ranks 'She's A Woman'?

That was quite a decent tune too I thought. :)

I remember Jason Seaver on "Growing Pains" yelling at Carol for spending all day in her room "listening to Scritti Pollitti albums." Carol wound scrunch up her face and say, "But, I don't even liiikkke Scritti Pollitti."

In a show filled with inside jokes, that must have been another one.

Man, that's how my best friend got his driver's license. When the person from the DMV got in his car he started checking out my friend's tape collection. And "Scritti Politti" was one he discovered. He liked the group and didn't seem to pay attention to what else was going on during my friends driving test. And my friend passed. Guess liking Scritti Politti was a good thing. And yes, I like them too but it didn't help with my DMV test since I didn't own one of their tapes at the time nor did my driver's test person care. :bigcry:

Coming from the UK and having lived and bought through those years, Scritti were one of the poorer acts (although way better than most of the Sh1te we see these days!). Prefab Sprout and Aztec camera (which they seem to get mentioned with in the same circles were much better bands with more enduring songs.

Scritti Politti were by no means a one hit wonder in the UK as they had 11 releases that made the 'Top 75', though they were never really what you'ld call a successful group, only making the top 10 twice with number 6 being their highest position with 'The Word Girl'

In 1986 Madness released a cover version of 'Scritti Politti's' 1981 release 'Sweetest Girl' as their penultimate release before splitting up, it reached number 35 in the UK charts which was 29 places higher than the original version, which was 'Scritti Politti's' first release to make the 'Top 75'.

The name 'Scritti Politti' is Italian and roughly translates to Political writings.

Lead singer Green featured with Kylie on the album track 'Somebody' on the 'Body language' album released in 2003. :thumb:

Unfortunatly the only Scritti Politti song I know is "Best Thing Ever" off the Who's That Girl Soundtrack... may have to pick up one of their LPs if I stumble across it in the thrift stores :-D

"Perfect Way" is the most conventional song on Cupid and Psyche 85, and unsurprisingly was Scritti Politti's only top 40 hit in the US.

Perfect Way received heavy rotation in 85 in the midwest, I just started to branch out to find more of their stuff.

I loved that song "The perfect way". Its also in my 45" collection. Back then we had record players, and I used to listen to this song on my big fat headphones!! I like the lyrics, and how they fit together, plus the beat. I still have my record player, and it works!! I just have to set it up. All of my records are at my parents house, though. If I do get it set up, I'm going to need two days so that I can play everything. Its going to be weird to hear those crackles again, though.
