View Full Version : Old 80s Cassette Tapes
80sTrivia 9-01-01, 11:07 AM Did anyone else keep old cassettes that you taped music from the radio on? I was just going through my cassettes yesterday and listened to a few! I have some rare songs on those tapes! On one tape, I have "Lessons in Love" by Level 42 (when was the last time you heard that song, 1987?) "Full Circle" by Company B, "Respectable" by Mel & Kim, "Under a Latin Moon" by Candy, "The Only Way Is Up" by Yaz, and "In Love with Love" by Debbie Harry!!! I sure am glad that I kept those tapes, and most of the songs on them are seldom (if ever) heard today!

RetroMan 9-02-01, 01:37 AM Hi MDC, I've still got all my tapes with classic songs on them, and it's funny because when you listen to them, for some reason you can remember exacty when you taped it! it's like a flashback. I've also got all my 'bought' cassettes too - including one that has a very infortunate title - Throbbin' 84 ha ha!!! I'm serious! it's called that - imagine going into your local record store and asking for a copy of Throbbin' 84!!
80sTrivia 9-02-01, 10:46 PM Hey there, Retro... just checked out your web site, and I liked your little 80s tribute! I, too, can remember what I was thinking and feeling from listening to a song that I taped! I found another cassette that I had taped an entire Rick Dees Weekly Top Forty Countdown from June, 1987, and it brought back so many memories for me. I laughed remembering "Dees Sleeze", "Groanan Bearit" (the gossip columnist) and Candie Plastic, the ditzoid Barbi Doll wannabe. Rick was hilarious in those days! He also interviewed a sweet and virginal Debbie Gibson, whose song "Only in My Dreams" was in the Top 10 that week, and she was only sixteen years old... sweet! Again, I'm so glad I kept those tapes! :D

sarasunshine 9-03-01, 12:42 AM I always used to tape stuff off the radio. I still have a few of the tapes. I would even tape stuff off of tv..so I have some tv themes taped too...like the theme to the Misfits...
RetroMan 9-03-01, 01:07 AM he he! I did that too Sarasunshine (tape from TV) it was before we got a VCR and I thought I was really clever, but when we got a video player, I couldn't believe how cool it was!

I did that too, but unfortunately do not have any of those tapes anymore. I have been recording some American Top 40 Flashback Shows lately for the memories though.
I always taped somgs from the radio :) I don't think I have any left? Im gonna check tonight :) I do have a Robert Plant radio interview taped from either the late 80s or early 90s :)
You could never record a song from the radio with brothers or sisters around :) They always felt the need to say something and mess up your recording!
And to think you waited all day for that one song!
Remember how we recorded songs...? You had record and play pushed in and pause set, so all you would have to do was release pause!! :p Later, you would play and pause the song trying to figure out the lyrics. ...those were the days! LOL
I just found a tape of a pretend "radio show" that my best friend and I did in ninth grade. (1989-90) :( I miss her!! It included "Walk the Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was), my pick, "I Want That Man" by Debbie Harry, again my pick, :p and "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus.... her pick. I was somewhat of a goth in high school but I've always been a pop girl at heart. :)
I remember waiting *all day* to tape songs! I still do it sometimes, like when my local radio station has a band live in studio.
I have a ton of music taped from the radio in the 80s. I remember sitting with my dad's tape recorder set right up next to the radio in the early days with my hand ready to record if the next song was a good one. I even have a recording of the "Solid Gold" top ten countdown from about 1982 from off the TV. It was a magic Christmas when I got a radio/tape recorder combination! :D

stevechrry 9-15-01, 11:01 PM ps MDC u got "love games" by level 42.Fine track. If it's of any interest they started out in the Isle of Wight U.K ------ that's where i live!!
80sTrivia 9-22-01, 02:23 AM Thanks for the info, Steve. Are Level 42 still together and recording new material? I always liked their unique sound, but I haven't heard anything new from them since the 80s, unfortunately. The Isle of Wight, wasn't there a famous music festival held there, around the time of Woodstock?
PS: I also remember that great song "Waterfall" by Wendy & Lisa, which was great. Haven't heard it in years, though.
America sends its love to our British friends!!! Thanks for your support!!!
