Hello all,
Imagine if you were fortunate enough to be allowed to play your favourite
lost classics* at a radio station. Given an hour (about 12 to 15 songs)
what would you play?
[*My interpretation of a lost classic is a song that doesn't get heard much
on radio; It may not even have been a hit ! As long as it was reasonably
well known, it qualifies]
I hearby submit my list of lost classics:
1/ My favourite waste of time- OWEN PAUL.
Only a major hit in the UK, It always reminds me of summer. So happy and
upbeat. Bette Midler also had a version out, but lacked the vitality this
one did.
2/ On the beach (88 version)- CHRIS REA
An artist sadly overlooked outside Europe, he updated most of his hits in
the late 80'son the "New light through old windows" cd. Again, this song had
that summery feel to it and the updated version had a beautiful instrumental
bit that made me feel like sipping cocktails by the pool on a secluded
island.
3/ She's mine- STEVE PERRY
IMO, the best song off his solo cd "Street Talk". I loved listening to this
on headphones to hear the great production values. When Steve sung the
"She's mine" bit, it sounded like he really meant it.
4/ Precious to me- PHIL SEYMOUR
I thought this sounded a lot like the early Beatles. Just about the perfect
pop song.
5/ Ah Leah!- DONNY IRIS
If I could only play one song on the [electric] guitar, I'd probably pick
this. Loved the chord changes.
6/ Love and pride- KING
This song just sounded so different to what was coming out in the 80's. I
can't explain why, but if you've heard this song, hopefully you'll know what
I mean. A great fusion of pop and soul.
7/ Deep inside my heart- RANDY MEISNER.
Maybe it was Kim Carnes' backing vocals, but this song had lots of energy.
Again, the beat was kicking throughout the song.
8/ Mary's prayer- DANNY WILSON.
This is such a beautiful song. The harmonies were excellent. Wasn't I
pleased it appeared on the "There's Something about Mary" soundtrack!
9/ Cruel to be kind- NICK LOWE
10/ Girls talk- DAVE EDMONDS.
These songs kind of belong together. Great guitar pop.
11/ Just got lucky- JO BOXERS
For some reason, this reminded me of the 60's. Maybe it was that stomping
beat, but it was a damn catchy song. Plus I used to chuckle whenever I head
the lead singer's name: Dig Wayne
12/ Loved you like I've never loved before- JOHN O'BANION
I thought this was Toto first time out. With those flashy guitar riffs this
is a song I'm always eager to hear again and again.
13/ Wonderful life- BLACK
Another "summer song". Really cool and relaxing. His unusual voice somehow
made this sound even better. Apparently this song took only 10 minutes to
write!
14/ Left of centre- SUZANNE VEGA (with Joe Jackson)
From the "Pretty in Pink" soundtrack. Striking and haunting. The
musicianship on this track is superb.
Over to you......
Regards,
Jimbo
