View Full Version : Daryl Hall & John Oates
Any other fans out there?
I loved these guys during the 80's, always very popular in the UK without being massive.
How did they appear in the US?
They had a pretty big following here. I'm not sure if any of their songs topped the charts, but I do know they hit the top ten many times.
That's pretty much the case over in the UK too Jen :)
I think they played a big part in 80's Trans-Atlantic pop music. They did cut some very smooth singles indeed....
Hall & Oates are great. I still listen to their old albums. Songs like Sara Smile, She's Gone, Maneater and Out of Touch are absolute classics in my book.
The Daryl Hall solo stuff is really good too. Good topic, Steve. :)
outofplacechild 11-29-01, 11:14 PM I love Hall & Oates. My fave songs by the duo: "Maneater", "Method Of Modern Love", "Dance On Your Knees" and Arthur Baker's extended remix of "Out Of Touch". It's great fun.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff
Iluvthe80s 11-29-01, 11:16 PM I really liked them too. My favorite songs by them are: "Maneater", "Say It Isn't So", and "I Can't Go For That".
djdaffy1227 11-30-01, 01:20 AM Hall and Oates are the most successful duo of all time in the US. They took the title from the Everly Brothers in the mid 80's. They had 5 #1 singles.
What a great duo. In New Zealand they pretty much had hits throughout the 80s.
My personal favourites are:
Method of Modern Love
Kiss on my List
Private Eyes
Man Eater
The last three are still played regularly on the radio here. For some reason I never hear Method of Modern Love though. At least I've got the CD!
Same here regarding 'Method of Modern Love', although it was one of the most successful singles in the UK, and their last top 20 as a duo.
'Kiss On My List' and 'Private Eyes' still seem to be the most played where I come from, I like all nearly all their songs along with those two plus 'Maneater', 'I Can't Go For That', 'Out Of Touch' and 'Family Man' (great lyrics!) are my favs.
I like all their stuff though. I thought that Daryl did a good solo cover of 'When Did You Stop Loving Me' in 1993, but that's been about it for me.
Hall & Oates were a great team. I liked their music because it was fun. "Private Eyes" and "Kiss on My List" were my favorites, but I generally liked most anything they did.
80sTrivia 11-30-01, 10:35 PM I've always been a big fan of Hall & Oates. They were staples on the US charts throughout most of the 80s. Don't forget that they participated at Live Aid (from their hometown of Philadelphia) and in USA For Africa.
80sTrivia: Official Stalker of DD86 & jen* :D
Great hair, great tunes, great duo. These guys were a huge part of my 80s experience.
Kiss on my list
Sara Smile
Private Eye
Man Eater
Big Bam Boom was a tape I definitley wore out - there wasn't a song on there I didn't love.
I do love So Close :) Love the story behind it. Thanks Steve. This is a great topic.
Robbster 12-17-01, 04:59 AM One of the first Albums I purchased was a Hall & Oates album. Excellent stuff!
80s hair 12-18-01, 02:02 AM Back in 1987 when I got a CD player the very first CD I bought was "Tango In The Night" by Fleetwood Mac. The second was "Rock N Soul Part 1" by Hall & Oates!! I love their music so much. Personal favorites are...
I Can't Go For That
You Make My Dreams
It's A Laugh
Family Man
Out Of Touch
They have a "Very Best Of" that came out this year. It has 18 of their best songs on it! Blows "Rock N Soul" out of the water!!!
wheresmyparachutepantz 12-20-01, 05:03 PM Hall & Oats were brilliant musicians and terrific writers.
I just heard a rumor about them though.....
Did you know that they were gay?
Is there any truth to that?
;)

I once read that Hall had made comments that he didn't find the thought of sex with a man disgusting. But as far as I'm aware he never made any statements that he was gay. I believe that this comment was blown out of proportion. Perhaps comments like that are enough to convince people that he is.
It doesn't change whether their music is great or not. So what, if they are gay? I'm not gonna sleep with them - and it won't keep me from enjoying their music.
I don't think that anyone would be bothered if they were gay or not, it's just a question that was posed.
Fair enough, my single cover of 'I Can't Go For That' did have John in pink jeans, white shoes and a sleeveless top, and one of their album covers did have them both made up to the eyeballs.
Trouble is it's hard to discern anything as that was the 80's, and both of them lived through the 'Glam Rock' years too!
My moneys on them being straight as most of their songs featured the opposite sex. However, George Michael *did* prove me wrong...
Sara Smile 2-13-02, 04:51 PM LOL! It is hard for me to hide that I like Hall & Oates. I am still trying to get all their CDs. Daryl Hall has a really nice voice. It is one of the few bands I like that aren't electronic.
I thought Darryl Hall was married. Anyhow, I loved thier cover of YOU LOST THAT LOVING FEELING, and the live album from the Apollo theater they had. Great CD.
BTW, whenI was in 7th and 8th grade, you could not go into a Pizza Hut without hearing a Hall and Oates song on the jukebox. Ever since then, I have never been able to eat at Pizza Hut and not think of them!
One thing I remember from a comedian was this joke "OATES, OATES! Here is a guy who had it made..... Him and Andrew Ridgley from Wham! have a new band, it's called 'Yeah Right' "
I always thought that was funny.
I listened to Daryl Hall & John Oates all through middle & High school. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing one of their songs on the radio! My first album I bought by them was in 1982, I think, the one "Private Eyes" came off of. They ran out of steam by the later part of the 80's and Daryl Hall flirted with a solo career, but nothing flourished, all I can remember is "Dreamtime". I didn't care for it much!
I prefer to remember Hall & Oates in their 'heyday', churning out the hits!! :thumb:
LOSTNTHE80S 2-13-02, 06:44 PM Nobody even mentioned their song RICH GIRL....I think that's practically the one that started them out...... I still listen to them once in a while.
No....didn't hear any rumour that they were gay...but even if they were, so what? We all enjoyed their songs....I think that's a no-no anyway isn't it? Sexual preference discussion on the board.?
Not trying to be rude ok?:)

This discussion came up some time ago, before that rule was instigated.
But what a great duo anyway right? And I don't think a day ever goes by where a good radio station doesn't play a Hall & Oates song. Definitely one of the greatest duos of all time in my books.
Ridgely and Oates together Jasper? LOL. Who knows, they could end up being a hit!
UGH. Again, it is not a totally forbidden topic. Asking if somebody famous was gay, and debating the lifestyle are two seperate things. You can say "elton john is gay" but you cannot say "all homos should burn in hell, since they are sinners" See the difference?
Agreed Jasper. And nobody is putting down Daryl Hall here. In fact it seems to me that he is being spoken about positively.
BrandyBlue 2-14-02, 07:12 PM no, they weren't gay-- that rumor started with their so called "Silver Album" on which they appeared in makeup for dramatic effect.
They are my ultimate favorite or the 80s--I have something over thirty of their albums
Nikki_91 2-23-02, 06:37 PM I loved Hall and Oates in the 80's. Big Bam Boom is definitely one of my favorite albums by them. I have to greatest hits cds..one's an import and it has more songs on it than Rock n'Soul pt.1. They were definitely big in the 80's..at least in Alabama, which is where I was living when Big Bam Boom came out.
Dancingdoll1986 2-23-02, 07:10 PM I loved all of their music!! I went to see them in concert when I was a junior!! Out of Touch was one of my fave songs.
Every time I hear Method Of Modern Love, I hear Weird Al singing it in one of his polka medleys. (Kinda ruins the song when you hear that instead...........actually, no it doesn't, I love Weird Al!!)
I like Hall & Oates, but mainly their really old stuff. I have their greatets hits cd and my favorite Hall & Oates song is Maneater.
I really liked the Behind the music show with Hall & Oates. It was a really good show and they seem like really nice guys.
rainydaywoman 5-26-02, 12:35 AM One of my very first albums I received as a gift was Hall & Oates' "Private Eyes." I still have it....They are one of my all-time favorite duos. I really like "Kiss on your List," but I enjoy all of their songs. I didn't get a chance to watch all of their Behind the Music show, but, as Pippi said, they seem like really nice guys. I totally had a crush on John Oates!! :)

I had forgot how much I liked Hall & Oats. Theirs was the first concert I ever went to in H.S.! (Late 80's) You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling is still one of my all time favorite songs!! Makes me want to go and find a greatest hits CD. Ebay here I come........
Greenway88 5-29-02, 10:00 AM I like all their songs and all their albums. My favorite song is Did it in a Minute.
Prefab Sprouter 5-29-02, 10:02 AM Yeah, They were good. My fav was
Method of Modern Love
They were great singers
My favorite is
Kiss Is On My List - The meaning behind it
According to John Oates, they didn't just mishear it, they misunderstood it. It is an anti-love song, "It means that your kiss is only on the list of the best things, it's not the only thing. Everyone thinks it's 'I love you and without you I would die.' It's exactly the opposite of that"
Maneater is also good
They were not very well known in my country, but songs like "maneater" were just too good to be forgotten (BTW, that's my favorite song... I don't like the lyrics, but the music is so good!). Watching a film on TV one month ago ("running bride") I heard that song again (was in the soundtrack) and I realised I had a hole in my CDs collection... I've already filled taht hole with the new compilation they have edited (and I've re-discovered some "almost forgotten" great songs).
Gay or not gay... (in the picture of that compilation, both look like... well, "obviously undefined") but, does it matter?. Who cares really about it?. What about Queen, Culture Club, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Bronski Beat, Village People...?.
