So the other day I'm saying happy birthday to a girl who just turned 13. Her mother and I were talking about how different the world was when we were 13.

I decided to give her daughter a little test just for fun. I asked her:

"What do the numbers 33 and 45 mean to you?"

blank stare

"What does 'side b' mean?"

blank stare

"Can you tell me what 'rpm' stands for?"

I am so evil :1offwall:

She did catch on later about 'side b' as she uses tapes.

That's kinda sad in a way... I knew all of those way before 13... me and my little record player

It's just so hard for me to fathom that our youth of today do not know such simple things as these.

he! he!yeah, very evil, but amusing! I'm surprised she didn't have a guess on some of those, like for RPM she would say "er........um........does it mean that person has Really Pretty Makeup??"

Like Roem said though, it is a little sad, with all the 'scratching' being the common thing in most modern R&B music these days, they must think that it's actually made by moving the zipper on your jacket up and down really quickly

That song from Sheryl Crowe "Soak Up The Sun" lyrics say "I've got my 45 on so I can rock on" in the end. My 16 year old cousin had noooo idea what on earth she was talking about. I felt so old knowing.

There's a comic strip of Bloom County where ...oh what was his name-- I can't beleive I forgot!-- Milo's friend, the one with the monster's in his closet. His father was having issues about getting older so he mentioned that he didn't know if he should wind his watch.

His son eventually succeeds in making his father beleive that he is still young, etc., but then he asks "What does it mean exactly to 'wind a watch'?"

RetroMan, that's a very interesting comparison. I hadn't thought of that. They've at least seen DJs using 12"s but I assume they need hands-on experience.

See, what you do in that case is just to tell your cousin that it's something sexual--then watch the scramble to the internet to learn what it really means! Hey, then you will have made your cousin learn something even if he/she didn't like learning!
