View Full Version : Anyone remember Martika?
gazmanoz 8-31-03, 10:11 PM I heard Toy Soldiers on the radio recently and it got me to thinking of what happened to her.
I used to love her album Martika's Kitchen.
Was it late 80's or early 90's?
djdaffy1227 9-01-03, 12:13 AM Martika's kitchen was in the early 90's. Prince wrote many of the songs on it including the title song and the biggest hit single on the CD "Love...thy will be done"
Toy Soldiers is a fantastic song, but unfortunately the only one of her's I have heard.
Roemello 9-01-03, 01:47 AM That's where I stand too... It is a great song though

I think it's the case of a lot of people and that's sad. I was in that same position too when I finally saw a music video of her, 1991 it was I think! Another song that was known
here's a recent pic of Martika:

and... here's a little bio :)
Martika born, 18 May 1969, California, USA. This pop singer grew up in California, her parents having fled Cuba shortly after the revolution. Her first experience in showbusiness came early, with an appearance as a dancer in John Huston's 1982 movie Annie. From 1984-86 she played the role of Gloria in the television series Kids Incorporated. She enjoyed almost immediate success with her music career when her debut single, December 1988's 'More Than You Know', broke into the US Top 20. Her second single, 'Toy Soldiers', topped the US chart for two weeks in the summer of 1989, and also reached the UK Top 5. A cover version of Carole King 's 'I Feel The Earth Move' reached UK number 7, but stalled at US number 25. An appearance in the television series Wiseguy as jazz singer Dahlia Mendez followed. Although 'Love ... Thy Will Be Done', her first single from 1991's sophomore album, was cited by one journalist as being 'sub- Tiffany', it was popular enough to put the singer back in the US and UK Top 10. Her profile was also bolstered by consistent rumours of romances with pop stars ( Nuno Bettencourt, Prince ). She co-wrote the UK Top 20 hit single 'Martika's Kitchen' with Prince, who also helped out with several tracks on the album. Although her popularity lingered for a while in England, the singer subsequently faded from view as she took a break from music. She returned to recording with 'The Happy Song' for the Welcome To The Conga Club collection, and began work on a new album in the late 90s.
80s Queen 3-14-06, 01:55 PM Great biography.! I didn't know anything about her, but I loved Toy Soldiers. Awesome Song.!
galaga-girl 3-16-06, 04:00 AM I can honestly say that if not for Toy Soldiers I wouldn't have a clue who the hell she is! That is the only song I can ever remember hearing of hers, I used to really like the video clip too :thumb:
lagirlie 3-16-06, 11:19 PM For some reason, I remember hearing that the song Toy Soldiers, which, I believe she wrote herself, was dedicated and about Boy George's addiction. Anyone else heard this? Also, Martika is now part of a duo called "Oppera". They have a really snazzy website and samples of their music and it sounds pretty good. Rock edgy. They also have some pics of them on tour. Here's their website: http://www.oppera.net
i love that album. still play it until it reach the scratch. she was at a pride festival last summer in my state. i was so mad i couldn't go cause i had to work. tarzan and jane and feel the earth move are my favs as well.
Livinginthe80's 8-30-07, 09:33 AM Yes, the "I Feel The Earth Move" single was huge out here when it was released. I think that it was off a self titled album. "Toy Soldiers" would have to be my favourite of hers, although "Love Thy Will Be Done" was good too. If you want to get the self titled cd, check out ebay. I'm sure i have seen it on there at one time or another.
still weird that she was on kids incorporated
