Okay folks here is the deal. I have seen the Lord, and his name is PRINCE.
Most people who have seen my other posts know I like ROCK, and METAL. But for some reason Prince has always held a great attraction for me. I love his songwriting and his music makes the masses come together.
This past Tuesday, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Prince on his current "Hit and Run" tour. Tickets went on sale 8 days before the event, and it was SOLD OUT. Granted, he only used 1/2 of the Savvis Center, a 22,000 seat hockey arena. But, that means he sold over 10,000 seats in 8 days. And he hasnt had a POPULAR CD come out in almost 8 or 9 years.
Showtime was advertised at 8, but the lights finally went down at about 9:05. A very simple stage was used, with keyboard players on either side, a bass player on the left, and the drummer behind the Keyboard player on the right. A Mic was set up mid stage for Prince, and one to the right for his Dancer/Singer.
The show started with "Uptown" not a well know song, but strong nonetheless. After the first song concluded Prince got on the mic and asked "ST Louis, Are you tired of BOY BANDS?" (Guess him an Bon Jovi feel the same way)The crowd roared. He the says "well, we are going to show you some real musicians, playing REAL music."
They then went into "Contreversy".
He ran through a few more songs, then started playing "DIAMONDS AND PEARLS" which is one of my favorite songs, well, if you know the song, then you know the part where the keyboards go "bomp, bomp, bomp" right before the horns kick in and make it sound like a royal's theme music. Well, they hit that part, and the lights go out. They "bomp" on the keyboards, and slow the pace down, then all the sudden, Prince is on the center riser, with a bright white back light, and he sing "BABY, BABY, BAAAAAA-BY" (the begining to "the beautiful ones") and I get chills. Literally, I have ****ing goosebumps! The crowd went bonkers! He played that, and the band went into a slow instumental, that led into "Nothing compares 2 U". A sax solo (this sax player makes Kenny G look like a straight up amatuer!) Then we have the lights go out, and the keyboards hold a note, for about 2 minutes and we hear "DEARLY BELOVED....." and he TOTALLY RIPS INTO(!) Lets Go Crazy. The whole audience is singing along.
Up next is his song "Do Me Baby" which, if you have never heard it, it is a nothing but, sex song. Just pure BOOTY music. He pulls a lady on stage, and lets her sit at the edge, and he is singing to her. This girl about passes out every time he gets close to her. The crowd was rolling.
He works through some more songs that you all know and love, including "When Doves Cry", "Cream", "Little Red Corvette", "I could never take the place of your man"(Another fave of mine). After about 2 hours, he is talkign to the crowd, and says "St Louis, I hear you got some rappers from here that are pretty good" Then he starts joking some guy in the front row. He tells him to get on stage and show him that he can rap. Well, turns out it is (OLD SCHOOL RAP FANS!) Doug E Fresh. He hops up on stage, and the band starts playing the beginging to a song, but then just goes straight old school hip hop and Doug E Fresh starts rapping, he runs the entire "LODDY DODDY, WE LIKE TO PARTY, WE DONT CAUSE TROUBLE WE DONT BOTHER NOBODY" Rhyme. The entire crown is on its feet, rapping along. I had forgot that I knew all the words. "I DILLY, DALLY, WENT DOWN THE ALLEY, BUMPED INTO MY OLD GIRL SALLY FROM THE VALLEY" It was great. Doug E Fresh rapped, and then Prince joined him, and rapped back and forth, involving the crown for about 20 minutes. In the meantime, Prince brought up all kinds of HOT girls from the crowd up to dance. He ends the show with "KISS" and has the crowd sing every other line.
Bottom line is this: Prince and the New Power Generation is probably the TIGHTEST band I have ever seen in my life. Tighter than Pink Floyd was, tighter than Queensryche (who were the tightest I had ever seen to this point). Every musician was phenominal! And his dancer was HOT! She came out in a little Catholic School Girl outfit for "Darling Nikki" and I know 1/2 the guys there were fantasizing at that very moment! This is, without a doubt the BEST concert I have ever been to!
If he comes within 100 or 200 miles of you, go see him. It is definately worth it!
