WOW! It's not like those grow back or anything. That poor guy! The woman waking up without her breasts is terrible, but in the long run, there may be hope of restorative surgery for her--he will more than likely, unless there is some miracle, not be so fortunate.

OMG! That is awful! I hope those patients are awarded HUGE settlements and the surgeons are banned from ever practicing medicine again. Even though money isn't going to bring back his penis or her breasts (I would hope doctors can give her a new set) - hopefully they can live comfortably for the rest of their lives.

Aww Jeez! Now THAT gave me a picture, and I can't get rid of it!!! :dammit:

The question is, will they live long enough to collect the settlement.

All kidding aside, there are two sides to this issue. On the one hand, this is definitely something the doctor should've discussed with the patient beforehand. Also, if he did suspect the cancer had spread, it would've been nice if he could have waited til the pathology report came back on the tissue removed (takes days sometimes). Then the patient could've made an informed decision.

On the other hand, I (since I work in a lab at a hospital) can see why the doctor would make the decision to go ahead with the removal. A second surgery would've been risky (for the patient), expensive (insurance may not cover it) and even perhaps unethical. Also, if the patient died because he didn't remove the penis, the doctor would REALLY be in trouble. Perhaps the question isn't "how can he live without it" but rather "would he want to die with it." It would have been preferable to let the patient mull it over and come to a decision, but when it comes to life-threatening diseases, doctors don't always have that luxury.
