View Full Version : It's too hot!
wavemaster 8-07-03, 01:59 PM Dammit...the heat is going on my nerves... :grrr:
For weeks, we had little rain but constant heat around 86° F (that's 30° C for the metrics ;)), and the forecasts are predicting the hottest weekend of the year with temps up to 93° F in our area. And...the meteorologists promised that the heat wave (no pun intended :D) won't be over that quickly - the Italian colleagues predicted the duration of the heat period until September... :goofy:
Because of this, we had to cancel our plans of visiting the M'Era Luna Festival (Wave and Gothic music) on Saturday and Sunday...I don't have the slightest inclinaton towards ending like a medium-done steak sandwich with a sun stroke.
I'm rather staying at home, sitting in the shadow (still sveltering hot) and inhaling gallons of beverages.
Driving a car without air condition becomes almost unbearable, even with the ventilator cranked up and the windows rolled down. If you think "head for the nearest lake and cool down" - forget it, more and more lakes are closed due to the explosive growth of algae which can affect the health. Besides, most lakes are that warm now, it's like having a bath in the tub.
Luckily, forest fires are not a big thing here (for now), but Southern Europe and Canada got it really bad this time.
Welcome to our world Wave! It's been in the 80's all summer on the east coast, and in the 90s a good amount of those days.
Now it's in the mid 80s and 100% humidity with rainshowers and thunderstorms scattered all day, and will remain that way until deep next week. :ill:
You'll get used to it.....we have! :D
Caligula 8-07-03, 02:26 PM It's the muggiest, most humid summer I ever seen, it's gross. currently it's 79 f (26c) which soundS nice, until you include the humidity which is making it feel like it's 99 f of (37c) .
It's been like this all summer, Just to go out and mow my lawn, I'm drenched in sweat when I come back in. I'm not used to this, We don't even have air conditioning.
I'm used to a nice mid 70's -to low 80's temperature with a mild breeze blowing off the ocean.
At least I don't have forest fires :(
Opheliarose 8-07-03, 02:44 PM Hey Wave, Trying living in Oklahoma!! It's Hotter that hell here right now and when it rain, forget about it!!
Sounds like Louisiana.
I wouldn't let 86 degree weather keep me away from an outdoor concert. Just take some sunscreen with you and drink plenty of water.

I hear ya Cal! Does the grass turn into a snot-like substance also while you're mowing? Lovely, isn't it? It all sticks to the blades of the mower because of the moisture.....:barf:

Nah, I rather stay in Lower Saxony... ;)
If it wasn't for my very sensitive skin (once I had a sunburn with second degree burnmarks which was treatened in a hospital!) and my general health status, I would be first row all the time...but I had collapsed twice in the recent weeks, so I don't think that it's a very good idea of exposing myself within the sun and the heat for two days. :(
I live in an area with tons of forest fires every summer!!!! You get used to it. Luckily things have cooled off here. Only in the mid 70's this week.
80sTrivia 8-07-03, 06:07 PM Those temps sound like a typical spring in Charleston, Wavey! ;) But, I love the hot weather and cannot tolerate the cold!
LOSTNTHE80S 8-07-03, 06:13 PM Nice and cool (er) here in Illinois....
Just perfect for some good music out by the pool (yes..going to rub it in again. 16' X 32'.... 4' deep and goes to 8 1/2' deep..paradise sitting up on the wraparound sundeck)
Johnny Z 8-07-03, 06:30 PM Most of the summer it's been in the mid-80s. Of course, in Kentucky the summers usually average in the 90s, so it's been technically a cool summer this year. But it's also been raining a lot, so it's pretty humid.
However, being a New England exilee, I still think it's too hot. :(

That's about what we have here in Ohio. You do get used to it. :)
Seems your best bet is to stay home wave. ;) Or come to my home. :naughty:
It's HHH here.......that's Hazy, Hot and Humid. Not as hot as Arizona and Texas, but I am ready for some relief. :hammer:
Slayergrrl 8-07-03, 07:56 PM Nice and humid here. No air whatsoever. I can't complain though. At least we have somewhat of a summer. :)
Iluvthe80s 8-07-03, 08:35 PM Try being here today! It was 108 degrees with a heat index of 112. Not fun at all! I was outside earlier washing my car and sweat was just pouring off my face from the heat. This was a record high today for our city.
It is supposed to be in the 100's the rest of the week.

I know... you'd think the rain would clear the air up and cool things down.... yeah right :p Although it hasn't been too bad today :)
Prefab Sprouter 8-08-03, 04:34 AM Its Hot here in Ireland and you know what?? BRING IT ON!!! We're so used to Cold and Damp weather that its a welcome change. :D
wavemaster 8-08-03, 04:37 AM Okay, okay, okay...I will never whine about the weather again...maybe Alaska is a better place to stay for me (would you come with me, TC?).
nolanbuc 8-08-03, 04:43 AM Try this on for size: You can probably imagine that summer in Memphis is as hot and humid as anywhere else in the South, right? Well, 3 weeks ago a major storm hit the city and 300,000 people (just inside the city) were without power. No A/C, no fans, nothing. It took most of that three weeks to get everyone back online due to the extensive amount of damage.

The heat is not as bad as the humidity. You feel sticky all over and the air is thick. Your hair gets frizzy and blah looking. your make-up never stays on. Your clothes stick to you. Everything feels damp. :yucky: (you know it, baby!:p )

Suddenly, humidity doesn't sound bad to me anymore... :naughty:

Alaska? My parents were in Alaska last month. Mom came home with a sunburn. NO LIE!!
Livinthedream 8-08-03, 11:10 AM Isn't it wonderful living in climates that can have over a 100 deg. temperature change from summer to winter. (It is probably actually closer to 130 degree change.) I would give my arm and leg for a high of 86:D
There is nothing like having 4 different styles of clothes to meet each season. (Not including the birthday suit when it becomes totally unbearable:lol:)
By the way TC are your clothes sticking to you now?:biglick:
red-rocker 8-08-03, 12:47 PM Today.Friday the 8TH and it's only 11:00 am and the temp is already 96 degrees with a high expected of 102 :yikes:
Of course, it's hot where I live.
Cheltenham has the record for the highest ever temperature recorded on UK soil in 1990 (something like 97F), but all the talk was that it would be broken by the current heatwave that all of Europe was experiencing.
- I think that Weymouth got to 96F.....close but no cigar, hahaa!
I love this weather, It's just perfect, because I had to cancel my annual 80's party from 2 weeks back due to weeks of non-stop rain since we got back from France on 12th July.
Tell you what, I'm glad I did - I rescheduled it for tomorrow night, who-hooo! :D

Now, I am in the comfort of the a/c. :p
It has been humid as hell over the past two weeks.. and what made it even worse .... they were doing tons of resets at Lowe's .. and apparently screwed up the air conditioning.. so, we were without air for two days ... and they wouldn't let me leave the big door open.. those bastards!!
wavemaster 8-09-03, 07:25 PM Just FYI...we had some 37° C / 98.6° F here today, that was the second highest temperature ever registered for our area.
The heatwave is supposed to take a break on Wednesday...and a new high pressure area is forecasted for the following weekend, with temperatures reaching "only" 30° C / 86° F. :goofy:
Jefferson Starship 8-09-03, 08:24 PM too much humidity this summer right here in Quebec, Canada... that's one of the worst summers since a lot of years!!! I can't wait for the winter, that's my favorite season!!! Under 20 degrees always fun!! :D
JustRockin2 8-09-03, 08:56 PM I also have a friend from Germany, Wave. And he was saying how hot it was lately. Hang in there buddy!
wavemaster 8-12-03, 10:11 PM It's driving me nuts!!! :grrr:
At midnight, we had 30° C (86° F)...currently, it's still too hot to find any sleep with 26.7° C (80.06° F) at 4 a.m.
That's the 11th day in a row with temps over 30° C ("tropical days") and probably one of the most dry summers ever in our area.
Luckily, a cooler spell is predicted for the next days - that would be fine for me, since I had rarely slept in the recent days... :4psycho:
Glenn Gulia 8-12-03, 10:56 PM Do you have air conditioning Wave?
Luckily it hasn't been too too hot here (which is not normal for August in DC), it's just been so damn rainy and overcast! Makes me not even want to get up in the morning.

Only a ventilator...the concept of air conditioning for homes is not very common in Germany.
Glenn Gulia 8-13-03, 03:06 PM Wow you gotta get a window ac unit. I can't get any sleep if the temp is above 76F. I like a cool house i keep it 70f year round.
Believe it or not, I am cold! What is the deal with that?? I have to have the a/c on since it is very hot outside. My apt. is not chilly but my feet, fingers and nose are cold. On top of that I am sleepy and it is only 7:45pm. DANG!!! I better not be coming down with a cold.
Wave, you HAVE to get an a/c. I doin't know how much the electric is there but fo my one window a/c it runs fairly cheap. Never over $70 a month. You would feel much better :)
wavemaster 8-14-03, 01:27 AM The tropical heatwave seems to be over for now...yesterday, the wind became gusty, temperatures dropping a fair bit, and until Sunday, temperatures will stay around 22° C / 71.6° F. At least in the northern area...tomorrow, we are visiting friends in Stuttgart (which is way down south), and the temps there will be around 28° C / 82.4° F.
Next week, the summer is coming back with around 30° C / 86° F, but also with a chance of scattered thunders.
Now to the topic of "air conditioning" in Germany:
First, the a/c devices are fairly expensive - the mobile a/c's starts around 300$ if you want one which is able to cool down a whole room, wall or window mounted a/c's are a bit more expensive.
Second...the energy companies would be too glad to hand us over a certificate for being their best customers, since electricity is - like almost all forms of energy - quite expensive here, an a/c would push us a bit more towards bankruptcy. :D
I'd be just about willing to switch with any of you. It was a lovely 116 degrees in Phoenix on Tuesday. That isn't even the highest that I have seen it get here either. I have seen it break 120. Now that's hot!
