View Full Version : I used up one of my lives today
RetroMan 7-08-03, 10:27 AM Well I can confidently say that the Idiot Of The Week award goes to me! I did something so stupidly stupid today that I'm going to post it up here:
I was helping my Dad out late this afternoon with some plasterwork on wall. It had some structual damage and I was repairing a cracked section. (My Dad is a Master Builder and has taught me many skills you see!) ....ok, I was working around a LIVE power socket that was sticking out of a wall (you can see where this is heading can't you?) Now, the reason why it was live is because there was machinery being used around the place and couldn't be shut off. It also was the only free socket and it had my 'boombox' stereo plugged into it. I find that I just can't work anywhere or do anything without music going. My Dad didn't actually know what I was doing as he was working on a different section. I was totally aware of the live socket it and was very carefull working around it - everthing was just fine, I had worked around live wires many times before,
BUT... later, I was walking past it, I accidently brushed up against it and touched the terminal at the back....ZZZAP!!! :vibrator:
I took a shock up my arm that would make my hair actually go straight!!!!
I believe I was very lucky and only brushed up against the positive terminal at the back, but if I had made contact with both....I don't even want to think about it - all I know is that I sure learnt my lesson (very quickly)
my quote for the week is:
"Taking risks in the name of music is sometimes a very bad idea"
LOSTNTHE80S 7-08-03, 10:32 AM OMG Retro...I'm so glad that you're ok! Your guardian angel was on double duty today! :)
Holy Smokes, Retroman!!!
You be careful, ya hear?! I'm glad you weren't hurt too badly. :)

My guardian angel was, yes :) by brain wasn't though! :drunk:
RockBoy83 7-08-03, 10:53 AM I'm sure that was a bit of a scare, but I'm glad you're all right.
I had worked as an electronics technician for several years, and I once experienced 120 volts AC current going through my hand (fortunately the circuit had an isolation transformer as a safety measure). In fact, there is an unwritten rule that you don't become experienced in the field until after you get your first shock. A fellow I once worked with got a much bigger jolt when he was repairing a power switch box.
By the way, RetroMan, don't worry about your hair going straight. That can only happen with static electricity (I've seen it happen with a Van-De-Graff generator) :)

BrandyBlue 7-08-03, 11:13 AM Did you get a bad burn? Electrical burns SUCK!
Glad you're okay--how about a portable head set there, guy?
May I be the first to say........YOU DICK!!!!:lol::laugh:
Bro, ya gotta be careful! There aren't enough of us longhairs left for you to go and deep fry yourself!
Jughead Jones 7-08-03, 11:53 AM That must have been an electrifying experience...but, I'm glad that you're still here to tell us about it.
They say that everyone has one of those moments...in my case, I tried going down the basement steps without clicking on a light...fell down the stairs, and crashed into the basement wall head first, knocking a piece of the wall out in the process.
No brain damage though...I think...;)
irisheyes 7-08-03, 01:54 PM Glad you are OK... What a hair-raising experience! Sorry had to do it..
Brand1974 7-08-03, 01:56 PM LOL irisheyes!
Glad you are okay RetroMan
DC Rebel 7-08-03, 02:01 PM I am glad to hear that you are okay, Retroman.

 I agree with Pagan. Definitely not enough of you longhaired hunnies around anymore, so you all have to be extra careful! ;)
wavemaster 7-08-03, 02:15 PM Electric Boogaloo, huh? :ego:
Well, usually it's not deadly to touch a common household live wire for an (healthy) adult - most severe injuries happen after the zap when people are falling from ladders etc.
Anyway, I'm also glad to hear that you are okay...but your internal boombox was surely running at multiple speed for a sec or two...
Be told by someone who is living in a country with double power (230V) and experienced it recently during the move (luckily, I was not standing on a ladder when I did the Robot)... ;)
Roemello 7-08-03, 03:38 PM That had to sting  Good to hear you're ok....watch yourself!;)
Most I've ever been shocked from is holding the leads of an Oscillator (think that's what it was) in high school electronics class...I was the only one who could take it full charge without dropping the leads right away. Kinda funky to see the charge course though your arms  Yeah, I know...I'm a freak
Retro!!! Be careful, hon  .. we can't have one of our favorite Aussies checking out on us .. Glad you're ok :rose:
Glad to hear you're ok Retro!!! I agree with Rhel here. You longhaired guys need to take care of yourselfs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Wow Retro! You're lucky it was just a shock. It could've been much more serious. It was an accident though so I would'nt call you being stupid. I once had an electrician at my house and he would strip the wires with his teeth and the juice was still on. :bigeek: Now, THAT's what I call being stupid, and I told him so.
He just said he was used to being shocked, so it was no big thing.
I wonder if he's still around!!!:hammer:
Glad you are ok Retro try to be more careful next time. :)
At my last job I was always careful because most of the machines ran on 480V three phase. The air compressor had 600V three phase. That's enough to ruin your day VERY fast.

I think it is a capacitor. :) I know that they can hold a charge for a little bit after they have been disconnected from a power source.
Ugly Kid Jeff72 7-08-03, 07:16 PM Good thing you brushed up against it, other wise you'd be ThanksGiving dinner. Good to see yur OK.
I am very happy that you are okay. Just be glad that your hair didn't stay permanently stuck up...

 Nah, I know what a capacitor is (did get that much outta my 3 years of electronics  ). This was an actual device plugged in. It was supposed to be used to generate signals to measure for testing sine waves and such, but if ya held both leads and had someone flip the switches and bump up the signal, it gave one hell of a good jolt :D
ImSoooSure 7-09-03, 02:45 AM Yikes Retro! That's scarey. I bet you dad was ready to kick your butt. I got electricuted last year and it is NOT fun. I'm sure glad you're okay. I swear if that electricity made your hair any bigger I'll be sooo jealous! :p :D
RetroMan 7-09-03, 07:55 AM I had a better day today, thanks everyone for all the nice comments, hopefully it wont happen again
