A few minutes ago, some idiot outside set off a few firecrackers, and it made me jump ten feet in the air. I have never known why people do this. It's dangerous and it could cause major harm. A few night's ago, a house was burned down due to teenagers throwing firecrackers into a house. In NYS, it's illegal to have firecrackers, but it seems like every year I hear them. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but firecrackers make me very nervous. I'll go to a professional fireworks display anyday thank you very much.
What are your opinions on firecrackers? Do you think it's okay to fire them off, or are you like me and get very nervous when you hear them near where you live?
The only thing I don't get is why those snakes and sparklers are illegal here in NYS? I remember watching in amazment when my parents brought home those snakes and sparklers. I mean, us kids were supervised when we had them, so nothing happened. But I guess in this day and age those fun things aren't allowed, because kids who aren't supervised properly get hurt.
Okay, I think it's time for me to go to bed soon. :p I'm starting to ramble on.

Firecrackers don't make me nervous. Now if kids are shooting them off unsupervised...now that would make me nervous! I have seen that around here.

In the city here we are allowed firecrackers, sparklers, and those snake things like you described. All other fireworks have to be shot off outside the city limits.

Fireworks have always been a right of passage for my family. Many happy hours were spent with my dad & brothers shooting bottle rockets, roman candles, etc, and I now do the same with my kids. Used responsibly and under proper adult supervision, they are not any more dangerous than many other passtimes kids have these days. Also, it teaches kids to show dangerous things (fireworks, guns, cars) the proper respect when they are used.

Now I know quite well that fireworks can hurt you, and I agree that people shouldn't be allowed to disturb their neighbors at all hours with loud bangs. But in most cases where people get into trouble or cause a disturbance with fireworks, it's not the fault of the fireworks. Irresponsible or rude people will find a way to be obnoxious with or without firecrackers.

Ah, Roman Candles, those firecrackers I don't mind hearing. I love how they make that high pitched "weeeee" sound than "BAM". (Okay, I'm bad at immitating a firecracker, I should be sleeping). Those are the only firecrackers I'll stand.
I've always wondered why firecrackers are illegal in some states and legal in others. It's legal (I think) in PA to get firecrackers, but here in New York it's not.
I still remember a family friend of ours bringing up firecrackers from Kentucky (or maybe it was Pennsylvania), and my Mom and him decided to set them off. They drove to this baseball field and set some off. They were so stupid, because the baseball field is right across from the local police station.

Actually, Molly, "WeeeeeeeeBAM!" is a very accurate description! :thumb::lol:

I've never been a big fan of actual firecrackers myself. They just seem like a cheap hollow thrill, compared some of the fireworks that take some skill and preparation and can be rewarding for the shooter and spectators.

As for laws, fireworks can be a serious fire hazard in some parts of the country and in large cities. Also, many cities that allow fireworks have a limit on how late at night you can use them to maintain the peace. Fireworks, like most hobbies, should be done in the proper place & time. I wouldn't break the law, like many folks do, to shoot fireworks.

Fireworks were always illegal when I was a kid, My neighbours always used to go to Florida for a couple weeks in the winter. When they came back they would always bring a bunch of firecrackers and we would go nuts with them . Bringing them to school and setting off, sticking inside eggs and throwing them etc.

I don't like to set off fireworks myself. Kids should definately NOT be setting them off. Where I grew up, the adults would set off fireworks. It was always a good time. :)

We set off some bottle rockets and lit some sparklers with the kids a couple of nights ago. Seems like they're getting harder to find..at least the fun ones are unless you go across the river to some dark ally...LOL! The roman candles were great!

It's illegal in Ohio to set off certain fireworks(I think they call them class A fireworks,firecrackers,M-80's,Rockets,etc.)but we have a couple factories where you can buy anything as long as you sign a waver saying your taking them out of state.People still blow them off and most cops don't bother anyone unless there's property damage or injury involved.I used to build model cars as a kid and one of the greatest things to me was blowing them up on the 4th.My mom always joked that I'd end up planting car bombs for the Mob when I got older.

I hear a few fireworks set off around my area. Probably at the elementary school across from me. Back when I was living with my parents, people would set them off at the golf couse right down from me.

Kids should be supervised when using fireworks. My cousin had a rocket firework go off while still in his hand one 4th of July and lost three of his fingers. He was lucky to only lose that much.

Our city has a by-law prohibiting use of fireworks without a permit. People still fire them off in their back yards etc., and we end up having to respond to all sorts of complaints. I could hear a group of kids setting off a bunch of Black Cats prior to the Canada Day fireworks display put on by our city.

We let off fireworks every year... I don't like firecrakers.. not because they are too dangerous,... but because thety are wimpy  Like buc said.. a cheap hollow thrill... not dangerous enough to us LOL

We drive over to Indiana every year and pick up the big fireworks.. artillary shells.. loads of them... they are good and loud and look just like the professional displays..

My husband and I were just saying today how "un-American" it is to have fireworks illegal in some states.

Happy 4th all!!!!

Tinajo, myabe you should come to NY and to to the legistators and try to convince them to change the laws against illegal fireworks. Tell them it's un-American to shoot them off and see what they say. :)
Simon and I had a great time in my aparment, but poor Maggie (my doxie) was shaking. She ended up under my bed. Dogs hate fireworks.

Living in a nice, quiet neighborhood, thankfully I don't have to deal with that anymore. Good thing too...my cat would probably be hanging from the ceiling

Back in my old 'hood, they start lighting those things off in early-mid June and go til almost August  All day, all night. I'm sure I'll get to hear 'em go off over the weekend when I go down there...:p

When I was growing up we had neighbors that would go to North Carolina every year and come back with big garbage bag full of everything under the sun that pertains to fireworks. They would light them off every fourth of July and the neighbors never complained. The best part is we had a cop that lived down the street and he would come out and watch them.......if that isn't cool I don't know what is.
I remember one time a guy I used to hang out with his father got hold of some big ass firecracker (not an M-80), but something that had some REAL balls. This thing blew a crater the size of a good size watermelon in the earth. Talk about loud!!!

I think if they are done in a proper and safe area with adult supervision then have fun.
