Caught the show at the PNC Bank Center in Jersey last night. Great show! I missed Slaughter unfotunately. I wanted to give them a chance to win me over, since I was never a fan of his singing.
Dokken kicked major ass musically, but Don's voice was a little strained. He couldn't hit the high notes, and they suffered a little from a poor mix on the sound board. Jeff Pilson is an underrated bassist, and an excellent stage performer. Reb Beach is a freight train on guitar!
Cinderella, in my opinion, stole the show. Tight musically, charismatic onstage, GREAT sound...it all added up to an excellent performance. Tom Keifer sounded fresh, and Fred Croury played better than I've ever seen him play. My only critique on them is that Tom has to get more of a rapport with the audience. When they switched from the acoustic part of the set back to the norm, there was about 30 seconds of total silence. A few well placed words to the audience would has filled the void nicely. Other than that, they were excellent.
Poison came out like gangbusters, but unfortunately suffered from horrible sound. You couldn't hear Bret clearly above the noise, and that's exactly what it was, noise. CC, in his defense putting on a GREAT show, made WAY too many mistakes on the guitar, turning alot of songs into inaudible mush. If it weren't for the vocals, sometimes you didn't know what part of the song they were in. When they played the acoustic ballads, Bret's voice sounded crisp and clear, and he still has that great onstage charisma. The only flop of the night was CC singing "I Hate Every Bone In Your Body But Mine". CC...stick to the guitar...and what was with the electrical tape over CC's nipples????
The stage show was outstanding, but the musicianship left alot to be desired. Then again, no one has ever confused Poison with Dream Theater! They entertained the crowd the way a rock band should, turning the night into one big party. It was definately the 80's again in New Jersey! Pot smoke filled the air, women were dressed sexy, the long hairs all came out of hiding, and people were dancing in their seats......ahhhhhhhhh..... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif
In short, thanx to Dokken, Cinderella & Poison for bringing us through the time warp and showing a PACKED house that 80's rock STILL sounds fresh today. Hopefully, some of the youngsters in the crowd (and there were alot!) will soak in what they saw, and put together bands playing with that kind of style and showmanship, and the rock & roll we all know and love will move forward into the new millenium with fresh new faces.
Peace,
Pagan
