They were kind of rockin' in their own, peculiar way. They were not Metal, they were not Hair, and they did not fit in with the Corporate Rock crowd either. Strangely enough, they did not fit in with outfits like The Human League and A Flock Of Seagulls either, but they were fun to listen to anyway, so who's your fave from this list  Add comments. I love to read why you picked your fave band.

Gee XXX, that was an interesting list to choose from! I LOVE The Smiths, but I just don't feel they fit in this category with the rest of the bands listed----so I chose Lords of The New Church (which some people back in the 80's DID think of them as a hair band) ;). Anyway, I love The Lords & I picked them cause I am sure not many others will. Plus their album "Killer Lords" is f'ing fantastic! :D :p

The Smiths are borderline Alterno. They certainly would not fit in with the likes of Def Lep, Led Zep, or Crue, so they kinda fall in with weird and cool sounds from Indie and Alterno rockers like Sonic Youth and R.E.M.

I picked Husker Du! I bought their Flip Your Wig cassette many moons ago! I wish I still had it since it has never been released on CD!! "Makes No Sense At All" was so catchy!

The Lords rule! But how were they ever a Hair Band:hammer:  Stiv Bators came directly from The Dead Boys while his co-hort was from The Damned. Punk-o-rama galore :1offwall:

I didn't say they were a "hair band". I said some people thought they were. Back in the late 80's, (at least here in my high school), more Poison fans were listening to The Lords then say New Wave fans. When I went to see The Lords in 1989, from the looks of the crowd, you would have sworn you were at a Motley Crue concert :D ALOT of my friends that were into Poison, The Crue, etc....were also into The Lords. :)

I love the Lords of the New Church. I bought the 12" for "Like a virgin" from a dealer at a record show. It was the "balls" version of the cover. The lead singer is in a wedding dress and you can see his balls hanging out  It's rather gross actually  I have since downloaded...er...went out and legally bought many other Lords tunes.

Husker Du would be a close second.

HAHA! I used to have that same record  And that's nothing compared to what Stiv used to wear on stage when he was with the Dead Boys  ;)

I guess The Plimsouls would fit in this category so I voted for "other". I love them! I could play their "Everywhere At Once" CD over and over.

It was a tie between Echo and the Bunnymen and The Smiths/Morrisey, but I picked Echo and the Bunnymen. I love Ian McCulloch's(sp) voice.

I went with Stone Roses. Absolutely wondeful example of the "Madchester" sound of the late 80's especially the second summer of love in 88. The song "Fools Gold" is just a classic.

I would have to say that The Smiths would come a close second although I decided not to go for Other and include "Prefab Sprout". They would be far and away my favourite!!! :D

In the 80s I probably would have voted for Violent Femmes, but that was only because for some reason I never found out about Husker Du and Bob Mould until I met my husband in the 90s. He played Candy Apple Grey for me, and I was hooked. I love Bob's solo stuff too. Workbook is a very well-used CD.;)

I see Flip Your Wig available on CD at Amazon.com, so I think it has been released on CD. I don't have this in my collection, so if you recommend it I'll have to order it too.:)

From this list, I'll take the Smiths. My favorite new wave artists are New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Howard Jones, Erasure, Talk Talk and Blancmange. (And probably another 50 or so bands.)

Hmm...in the 80s, I didn't gave much for the so-called "Alternative" music - see, I was a Synthhead all the way...

But...okay, took me just 15 years to discover, but I'm hearing a lot of The Smiths and Morriseys stuff recently - and I like it. ;)

I too was totally into anything electronic...though strangely preferred bands like Tubeway Army, OMD, Ultravox,Depeche Mode & Flock of Seagulls that used real drums and/or percussion...something emotive about that......anyway...as far as 'indie' bands do....Smiths and Bunnymen definitely at the start of the decade, with the whole 'Manchester Scene', Stone Roses, Pulp etc. heralding in the progression to set the stage for 90's british alternative rock.

My vote went to "The Stone Roses" on the basis of their brilliant hit "She Bangs The Drums"

Echo And The Bunnymen

no question (and the Minor fact that 'The Jesus and Mary Chain' isn't on the list)

Bring on the dancing horses, Killing moon, Back of Love, The Cutter are all great upstanding songs. People are Strange shows they can certainly do a good cover.

Not sure where else he would fit but this category...so I chose my personal fave Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The perfect blend of attitude, brilliant lyrics and stirring melody. Brilliant live too.

On this poll, I have to go with the Lords of the New Church. One of my favorite 80's bands. Although Echo & the Bunnymen and the Fixx are very very close!

Wasn't Stiv Bator's in the John Waters Film, 'Polyester'?? I think he was the crazy boyfriend.

I orginially voted for REM, but I would definitely have to vote for The Smiths now. I didn't start listening to them until about a year ago...now I am completely in love with their music.
