What are some of your favorite cover songs. Songs by one person, and then remade by somebody else?

My personal favorite would be UP AROUND THE BEND (originally by Credence Clearwater Revival) done by HANOI ROCKS. I always thought that was a GREAT version.

PLUS, what band would you want to do a cover, and what song should it be? I always thought that MOTLEY CRUE (circa 1988) would have done a splendid version of the Rolling Stones PAINT IT BLACK.

Any other ideas/suggestions?

One of my favourites is "The Real Me" redone by W.A.S.P. Another interesting cover I got the other day is "Pour Some Sugar On Me" redone acoustically by The Stone Temple Pilots. It sounds really good.

My favorite from the 80s is definetly "You're So Vain" by Faster Pussycat. They turned a slow whiny Carlie Simon song into a dancable kick-ass party song.

I think the best one I heard is Stevie Ray Vaghan's version of Jimi Hendrix's Little wing. He's the only one that could make a Hendrix song sound better. I also like it when Bon Jovi play The boys are back in town. I would like to see someone retake Stairway to heaven. Just to see how they would do on it.

Anybody ever hear WASP do MISSISSIPI QUEEN?
I heard it one time, and it kicked ass!

Of course, some of my other favorite covers would be:

HOLIDAY IN THE SUN by SKID ROWE (great song, by the sex pistols, i believe.) They kick the shit out of it!

EASY by Faith No More (the old Commodores song) when I heard it was the Commodores version, I expected it to be all rocking and messed up, but they did it pretty much the traditional way, sounded great!

FIRE AND RAIN by Badlands
(Original by James Taylor) Great song, rocked out hard by Badlands.

2000 Man KISS (original by rolling stones)
ANY song that Ace gets to sing on, is a good song to me!

MAMA KIN by Guns N Roses (original by Aerosmith) On the LIES cd, great live tune.

IF I WERE A CARPENTER Robert Plant (orignial by ?????) I am not sure who did it first, but Robert plant has a great version on his FATE OF NATIONS cd.

CANT FIND MY WAY HOME by House of Lords. (original by somebody i cant remember right now.) One of my favorite songs of all time. GREAT SONG, GREAT VERSION!

TOO many others popping into my head right now.

I Can't Get No Satisfaction - DEVO
Turn The Page - Metallica
Ball of Confusion - Love and Rockets

I always wanted to do a show on local radio that played the cover song and then the original, or vicey versey.

Faith No More's - Easy ( one of my favs)
David Lee Roth - California Girls (I've only heard and seen his name with this song not Van Halen!)
Yes, Devo's - 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' is slightly different than the original.

I couldn't stand Sid Vicious' version of 'I Did It My Way'! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif He just can't sing and definately did it his way http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

God, so many killer songs!!! I'm glad to see that there are people here who love Doro Pesch & W.A.S.P., 2 of my faves!

Favorite cover songs.....I gotta think about this one.

"Since I Don't Have You" - GN'R (Anything by GN'R, cover songs or originals, is okay with me!)

"Too Fast For Love" - The Donnas (One of my fave 90's bands)

"Gold Dust Woman" - Hole (Usually I cannot stand Courtney Love but I love this version much more than Fleetwood Mac's original)

"Helter Skelter" - Motley Crue

"50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" - Trixter

"Sweet Dreams" - Marilyn Manson (An 80's song given a whole new sound by Mr. Manson)

"Mama We're All Crazy Now" - Quiet Riot

"Train, Train" - Warrant

"Paranoid" - Megadeth

There is a bunch more that I can't think of right now. Be back later on!

Love to all!!!!!!

I'm one of those people that love to tear apart cover tunes, don't get me wrong there are alot that have been done great, but some I totally, completely hate. I'm a big fan of Eurythmics and Annie Lennox's wonderful voice, so when I heard Marilyn Manson's version of Sweet Dreams i was disgusted. (But I have a hard time with MM as a whole,I think he's a joke) MHO
One of my favorite remakes is "Proud Mary", both versions by CCR and Ike and Tina Turner are great. I like Cheap Tricks versions of Ain't that a Shame and Don't be Cruel.

I'm not big into covers... but some good have been done... like Metallica cover album... that breathed life into some really cool songs. Poison's "Cover Of A Rolling Stone" and "Your Mama Don't Dance" were pretty cool... but some songs were killed when re-made... like "Sweet Child Of Mine" and "Sweet Dreams" the originals were a ton better!

Some of my favorite cover tunes are:

1. Bon Jovi - Bridge Over Troubled Waters (Simon & Garfunkel), actually its just Jon and Richie on acoustics
2. Warrant - We Will Rock You (Queen)
3. Jon Bon Jovi - Levon (Elton John)
4. Van Halen - You Really Got Me (The Kinks)
5. Poison - Rock n Roll All Nite (KISS)

I hate when bands do covers of Beatle songs. I always feel that they can't do them good enough so why try. Like I don't like the Crue's Helter Skelter or Aerosmith's Come Together. What I thought was cool was I just saw Warrant last month and they covered a Lit song (My Own Worst Enemy) which was really cool.

Most of those songs in my book are and never will be forgotten. I'm sorry but if Phil Lynot was still alive I do not think he would have allowed them to cover "Whiskey in the jar". As for the rest....I'll just leave it at that.

Tydestra, I do not mean to come off as an asshole so don't think that. It's just that I am so sick of hearing how great "M" is and all the other bull$hit it just gets on my nerves. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif If you want to hear great listen to "Ride the Lightening" or "Kill'em all". Hell even "And justice for all" is better than anything they have done lately. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

FWIW, Whiskey in the Jar is an old tradiotional pub song that was around a long time before Phil Lynot was a Hershey Bar in his daddy's back pocket. I have a "Celtic Songs" CD that has an Irish version of it. Phil Lynot covered the old song, changing it around to a modernized version. He wouldn't have had a choice about letting them cover it or not. His cover just brought the song out into the public consciousness, much like "Show me the way to go home" has been done by so many bands as a joke.

And we won't even *begin* to get into comparing apples and oranges when it comes to earlier and later Metallica.

Amy, there was a band in the 80's that did a remake of "Stairway to Heaven". It was a weird band like O.M.D. or Psychedelic Furs or something like that. They played it on MTV. I was so disgusted! They completely tore it apart! I don't even want a great with true talent to touch that song. Led Zeppelin were the masters! Any band that tried to redo Stairway just wouldn't do it justice. Sometimes there is no substitute for the original.

Okay Mr Miata, I am curious about it. But, I was talking about a serious remake of the song. I truly believe there is no band out there (no offense to any of them) that could do the total song in a tasteful manner that shows respect for one of (if not the...) best rock songs ever written and performed.

I'm a real purist and love original versions. The only re-make I liked better than the original was "The Locomotion" redone by Grand Funk Railroad (originally by Little Eva.) Please, no one mention Kylie Minogue! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/tongue.gif

It's not really a cover, but I nearly fell out of my seat when I heard The Bloodhound Gang's song 'Mope' - the whole song is a 'cut and paste' 80's sample collage using

Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica
Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

They're a clever bunch you know!

The for whom the bell tolls a cover and the rest sounds kinda cool retroman.
