View Full Version : what are the books that u DON'T read?
leeney_b 5-29-03, 12:23 AM What are the kind of books that u DON'T read?
For me, I stay away from romance novels...the sappy, syrupy ones. It's like reading something that is totally unrealistic and fairytale-like. It's just not my style.
I also stay away from novels by Patricia Cornwell...i used to be a big fan of hers but her work has become worse and worse over the years. I also don't read Sidney Sheldon (too formulaic) and John Grisham, although I read them too when I was younger.
What about u guys?
ImSoooSure 5-29-03, 12:50 AM I'll admit I'm not much of a reader, unless it's fashion mags. But, if I do read a book I really like books that put a twist on different beliefs and theories. Something that will make you look at an idea in a completely different way.
I stay far, far away from romance novels. Definately not my style.
Slayergrrl 5-29-03, 08:05 AM I RUN away from romance novels.. Other than that i'm a book nut. I'll read anything if it keeps me intrested.
BrandyBlue 5-29-03, 08:12 AM NO V.C. ANDREWS!!!!!!!! If you have a VC Andrews book, no matter which one, I can tell you how it goes--
Children are abused and neglected and unhappy. Parents are deplorable. Unspeakable acts of incest that are for some reason spoken of. Cliffhanger at the end to leave you wondering, could this happen again? Yes, it can happen and WILL happen, over and over
Opheliarose 5-29-03, 08:43 AM One word - ROMANCE!!! :yucky: They are sooooo Stupid and so boring!! And I would have to agree with Bandy on V.C. Andrews, I read a couple of her books and they were great, but after that it was the same storyline over and over again!! And that gets old fast!!!
Prefab Sprouter 5-29-03, 09:19 AM Books I DONT read:
Not that interested in Cornwell or Grisham, stories just a bit too formulaic for me.
ROMANCE??? I dont think so. Not my style.
:D
DC Rebel 5-29-03, 12:15 PM The list of books that I refuse to read is a lot longer than the list of books that I will read. Romance novels and School Textbooks are up at the top of the list of books that I refuse to read.
Rhelawen 5-29-03, 12:18 PM Romance novels. :barf:
Romance Books, YUK! Don't care for gossip stuff either like the Enquirer.....
80sTrivia 5-29-03, 07:52 PM Another vote for the romance avoiders here! I'm no fan of Danielle Steel's, but someone must be, because she's amassed a staggering fortune! $$$
I don't care for Romance novels much, however, I will read Jude Devereaux's historical romances. At least I have read them.....not lately though, so maybe they're off my list.
I don't read real scientific sci-fi novels. I just don't get the lingo.
I stay far away from romance novels. And anything that has to do with Science Fiction
andiegirl 6-06-03, 12:23 PM Can't do the romance novel thing. blech
Danielle Steele is a formula writer, and I sure wish I made the money she has writing tripe.
sketcher 6-06-03, 02:31 PM I'll be the first (maybe only) to say I don't like to read Shakespeare. Ok, maybe that doesn't count.
I don't care for books about lawyers' court cases for murder --it seems to be the only theme being published these days!
angeleyes25 6-06-03, 04:44 PM Romance and sci-fiction boks I stay clear off!
Caligula 6-07-03, 12:25 AM I don't read romance, Sci fiction/fantasy , or horror
Romance novels....definitely! Even though all the guys on the cover have long hair! (gotta give them credit for that! Makes me think that women secretly have fantasies about guys like us!:lol::laugh: )
Another one who hates Romance books here!
And I'll go along with Sketcher when it comes to Shakespeare! :ill: I can't understand why anyone would want to read that tripe. I know it's a great example of colourful prose. Many sayings and phrases from these novels have become part of our vocabulary, but it's still goddam awful. If they converted them into modern English, then yes, the stories would be good, but I just can't get over the old fashioned language.

Or sometimes not so secretly...
If we have any romance novel fans visit this thread, I wonder what they'll say? LOL! I don't like them either. So formulaic.
I don't like crime novels, lawyer novels, mysteries, horror novels, (much... I do read them once in a while for kicks) or any medical dramas like those ones by Robin Cook that got made into terrible movies. ;)
Foreigner 7-19-03, 10:52 PM books that are tooo long and tedious...im into mystery and crime storys..ohh and drama not really in romance
Stand up and say it proud - I READ ROMANCE NOVELS!
Well, okay, I really don't, but I was beginning to feel sorry for any that do and came to this thread. I don't do romance or self help books.
I will not read romance books.. if I can't have it I sure in the heck don't want to read about it.
I don't like sci-fi stuff.:alien:
I don't the romance novels either. I agree with Milani's take on that one.
Eric T H 8-24-04, 06:03 PM Instruction books
I've never been able to sit down and read a full one yet, unless it's only 2 or 3 pages long of course.
I have no interest in reading the 'Classics' either which includes Shakespear, Charles Dickens, etc.
The romance novel is another no no.
Harlequin Romances :barf:
Other than that i will read most stuff......I really enjoy stories based on "firstman" (cavemanish) ,murder mysteries, medical science mysteries and yes even Shakespeare!
Hipechik70 8-24-04, 07:02 PM No romance novels. CORNY...lmao to me that is.. :D
HouTexGurl 8-24-04, 08:41 PM No romance here either. Who cares if it was hot and steamy..Geez I can read that in those in Variations books :D
whistledog 9-20-04, 09:38 PM I wouldn't ever read a Romance novel. They're too sappy. I used to love reading books based on movies. I'd read the book first, then watch the movie and see what was left out :)
