Hi everyone, and thanks for such a warm welcome :D

Well, I did say I'd need your help for my dissertation, well here goes....................

Why do you like the 80's so much???

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)

If you you do go to nightclubs, where are they, what are they like, why do you go, what do you wear etc?

Anything else you'd care to share with me?

Thank you in advance, i'd really appreciate any help

Cheers sarah :D :D :D

The 80's were a great time full of great music, great clothes, the booming of videos. You could cruise up and down the main drag on a Sat. night know someone in every other car that passed. You could sit in the park and talk with some guys you had just met...and feel safe.

My friends and I would take my car out on the weekends... go to the drive through at the liquor store in hopes that the good looking guy would be working and he would serve us (I turned 21 in 1983 so this wasn't too much of a problem). We'd run by Hardees or Mc Donalds to get some french fries and a glass of water, dump out the water and use the cup to hide our beer or Boone's Farm, sit on our cars out at the shopping center, turn on the music, and talk to everyone who pulled up.

Around 1984 ...most of the guys were getting their own places. We had about 20 in our group and we'd go to their places to party. Sit and play quarters on some nights. Or..go out to the college where the guys would race.

The 80's had a feeling of security. I don't know how to explain it. Something was just in the air. I would say that I enjoyed 1980-1985 the best.

Were the 80s ever gone? :D

At least not for me...the 80s were the decade in which I grew up, during my teenage years, and I guess that is why these years are still somehow vivid in my mind.

All the firsts...I have discovered New Wave, Wavepop and electronic sounds pretty soon (regarding my age), in 1979 with artists like Ultravox, Tubeway Army, Jean Michel Jarre and others, and with the beginning of the 80s, the Neue Deutsche Welle came up with artists like Nena, Falco and Peter Schilling (though I've preferred the rather unknown stuff like Rheingold and DAF). Soon, I've learned more about electronic music in the likes of Human League, Heaven 17, New Order...and Depeche Mode.
"People Are People" hitted me like a hammer - from this moment on, I was completely devoted to DM and Wave, and there was always something new, be it Italo Disco, House, Acid.

The fashion and design of the 80s struck another nerve inside me...although I wasn't completely aware of the fashion and designs of the 70s, I didn't liked it - but the 80s were just cool. Cool clothes like surf wear, cool hairstyles (I used to wear a hairdo similar to that one of Dave Gahan ;)), cool designs and items like coloured neon tubes, wave machines (remember the movie "Diva"? If not, rent it!), electronic gadgets like the Walkman and later the CD players, video game consoles, home computers (although I was rather interested in tuning my moped), cable TV...like in the music, there was always something new to discover, and it was also the first time when I was able to express myself as an individual (much to the dislike of my parents and teachers  ).

With growing age, I was allowed to visit nightclubs and discotheques (at least by my parents who didn't saw any sense in locking me in at 10 pm...laws were something completely different) - a great chance to style myself up, dance to cool music and to impress the ladies around which became almost as important as the music and my moped. :D
The feeling of belonging to the adults (i.e. the people over 18) was also adding a bit to the kick of going out at weekends, since I never had much problems (and a faked bus card  ) with the doormen at the clubs. The problems with alcohol was also something completely different... :barf:

The clique I was with...all the people belonging to it were extremely cool, we were a really tight group who did a lot of things together, from the disco raids at weekends to vacations in Spain. Of course, we also did a lot of nonsense, but hey...we were young, and really didn't care for the next day as long as we were having fun. Unfortunately, our clique broke up at the end of the 80s when things like responsibilities and serious relationships kicked in finally...

For me, the 80s never ended, at least for the music...sure, I'm not running around anymore like it's 1984, but in my heart and soul, the 80s never died.

How long do you have? Simply put, it was the time that most of us here came of age, our youth or or teenage years. Lots of special memories.

Again, it was what I grew up with. Like most generations, we think the way we dressed, wore our hair, etc, was the coolest way ever.

I have a pretty extensive CD/cassette collection and a very extensive mp3 collection. Also I can listen to club977.com, plus I have digital cable at home, so I can watch VH1 Classic or listen to the MusicMatch 80's channel. So getting my 80's fix isn't too hard. :D

As for going out to clubs, I don't get to much these days. Having 3 boys, ranging in age from 9 to 14, keep me and my wife busy with other pursuits. Not that we mind to much, we plan to par-tay once the kids are grown! :sneaky:

Hope this helps! :)

Q: Why do you like the 80's so much???

A: I love the sound of the music, some of the greatest movies came from that decade, the fashions, the whole atmosphere of it all.

Q: What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?

A: The music just has a sound that appeals to me more than any other decade in the past or present. The fashion was kinda cheesy, but cool at the same time. The atmosphere was more "laid back" and not so politically correct like it is now. We weren't so big in a hurry all of the time.

Q: Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)

A: There is different ways I listen to 80's music. I mainly listen to CD's in the car or my old record albums here at home. I do check out bands of the 80's in concert when they come to town. I also have 80's videos taped that I watch sometimes.

I hope this helps you. ;)

Why do you like the 80's so much???-

Because although I was only born in 1982, the 80s were happy years for me...Toddling free, then walking...School days without having to worry about cliques, basket cases and assorted nuts. With much Internet research, I've come to find out more about the decade, and I've been enraptured with the movies, music, TV and YES, even the fashions and hair of the 80s for 5 years. I buy 80s movies and books...I have a jean jacket with band buttons all over...I write stories and scripts either set in the decade or set in modern times, but having heavy 80s elements.

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat? -

The music was bigger, peppier, harder, funkier, more danceable and more outrageous. Same with the fashions, the culture, the movies, the TV, the politics...Everything was on such a gargantuan scale that you couldn't/can't help but want to be a part of the whole shebang. The 80s was a decade you could be in rhythm with, no matter what.

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)-

In my bedroom and on the record player downstairs.

Anything else you'd care to share with me?-

Yeah...After 1992, the 90s blew goats. MTV doesn't play music videos anymore, and I can't understand why people still watch it when it betrayed the core mission (Thankfully, we have VH1 Classic to pick up the slack). The fashions were not abysmal, nor was the hair...They were far better than what we have today. People who keep the 80s spirit alive include Pink, Miss Kittin and The Hacker, Felix Da Housecat and the teen-pop divas Britney Spears and Mandy Moore. I believe that if you're going to say you love the 80s, you better flucking damn well mean it!

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff...

I love the 80s, and I mean it!

Well for me it's the simple fact that everything that inspired or influenced me came from the 80's. I was born in 72 so by the time I was into music, movies, freinds, etc... it was the 80's. I like just about all types of metal, But mainly bands of that decade. The clubs I attend are somewhat of that nature, I go and see cover bands alot cause they play what I want to hear and the music I know. The 80's for me and many posters on these boards would just have to agree that the 80's to us were like the 60' & 70's to hippies and flower children!

Why do you like the 80's so much???
The music, television and movies. There was so much variety in the 80s

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?
It's hard to say. There were so many great musical groups back then, something for everyone. Maybe it's got something to do with it being the decade I grew up, I don't know, but there are a lot of fond memories.

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)
Normally I just have CD's playing at home.

Why do you like the 80's so much???

First off, I was a kid during the decade, so it was kinda hard not to have fun :) It just had an overall fun and carefree atmosphere to the time. Lots of originality in everything from music to movies, tv, etc. To sum it all up one word....fun.

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?

The music - That's hard to say...there's just something about it all as a whole that just never loses it's luster...at least to me. Trying not to be repetitive, but it all comes back to the fun aspect...it's just fun music to listen to :)

The fashions - I didn't go through too much of it myself, but I've always held an appreciation for originality and the 80's certainly had a plethora of that.

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)

Where? Everywhere possible  As some here who've met me know, I'm rarely seen without a walkman  I listen to music ever moment I can and it's just about always 80's music. I've yet to find a good 80's club around here, so that's out :p

Why do you like the 80's so much???
I like to think back to a more innocent and carefree time in my life. I really had an ideal upbringing and my upbringing was in the 80s. It was a much safer time than today. I never worried about gangs, guns and school shootings.

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?
The styles were so flamboyent and wild. It is such a dramatic and vivid memory to think back about the shoulder pads, permed hair, mohawks, mullets, long hair rockers, new wavers, preps... No matter what your style was it was dramatic, which creates very vivid memories.
The music was so refreshing and new from that of the 70s. It really created the feel of a new more powerful and independent generation.

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?) I listen to it at work, in my car and mostly on cds. I download some of the music and purchase a lot of cds. I dont go to night clubs, although there are a few that feature 80s nights in my city.

Why do you like the 80's so much???

Like everyone else said. It was the time I grew up in. I was born in 1971.

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?

The music was new. From The Sugarhill Gang hitting top 40 with "Rapper's delight" in early 1980, starting the whole hip-hop ball rolling to the somewhat new sound of punk's raw energy. From the synth sounds of New Wave to the pure fun of top 40 pop. From the heavy metal sounds of Iron Maiden and Motorhead to the hard rock sounds of Bon Jovi. It was the first decade to really branch out into many areas musically.

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)

I have a collection of 80's music, actually it's more of a sickness. I have every Hot 100 single of the decade and thousands upon thousands of non-Hot 100 singles. I listen in my car, at home on VH-1 Classic. Anywhere I can. On the same hand I really like a lot of today's music.

If you you do go to nightclubs, where are they, what are they like, why do you go, what do you wear etc?

Sadly, we don't have an 80's night club.

Anything else you'd care to share with me?

80's is a state of mind. To truly understand, one needed to live in the decade we love so much.

I didn't grew up in the 80's (i was born in 1981) but i'm devoted of the era.
I love the music because it was original, full of geniune passion and emotions and at the same time very catchy.
The era produced true "hit" songs, which come through your mind over and over again.
There was a unique combination of music and aesthetics: the bands had an amazing style.
I love the fashions and looks of the 80's because they were gorgeous, crazy, outstanding, sexy and creative.
I love how androgynous men and women looked, like some fantastic beautiful creatures.

Why do you like the 80's so much??? Honestly, I'm more of a fan of the seventies than the eighties, but since the 80's are "my" generation, I can of course relate to that decade better. A funny thing I've noticed is that a lot of people who were teenagers in the nineties think of themselves as children of the eighties...while I think of myself as a child of the eighties as well, although I was born in 1969. Pretty all-encompassing decade, that in itself is interesting. So I guess my question is who claims the nineties? And I've got to say it freaks me out that people are doing "retrospectives" on my high school years. It seems like just yesterday I was trapped in high school, waiting to spring into the real world...

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat? There is an unapologetic boldness about the eighties that is appealing. Entertainment for entertainment's sade, without people pretending to have moral intentions. The most moral guy around was Bono and at least you know he meant it. Everybody else just wanted to flippin' party!

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?) I listen to "I love the 80s" on vh1.com at work, and I have some eighties cd's, but I don't have a lot of cd's that are specifically eighties-oriented. It WOULD be fun to go to a club that encapsulated the new wave dance clubs of my youth.

If you you do go to nightclubs, where are they, what are they like, why do you go, what do you wear etc? I like to go to laid-back places that are like living rooms that sell beer. Oh yeah, and there are great local musicians hanging out, too. The other places I go to are usually bigger venues, from the Fillmore to Shoreline Ampitheater. Although nothing beats the First Avenue of my youth!

Anything else you'd care to share with me? I find myself looking back at my early childhood, the 70's, with a golden haze...I wonder if people who were little kids in the 80's look back at that decade with the same golden haze...

Why do you like the 80's so much???

I was in my mid to late twenties during the 80's, so the music in many ways was a continuation of the music I liked in the 70's. Many of my favorite music artists started out in the seventies and played on through the 80's. Artists that stated in the 80's made the music even more interesting, took more chances with different styles.

What is it about the music, fashions, culture etc that floats your boat?

The music and the fashions of the 80's were fun. The music had something to say to each individual who listened to the lyrics. The music created a drive in the soul. I miss my burgundy colored Members Only jacket.
Everything about the 80's was cool, whether you were a young kid in grammar school, a teen in high school or a young adult. It was a time that was unique to all us that lived it.

What will todays kids have to say when they get older about their days in the 90's and 00's? That they got to wear their pants five sizes to big? That their they wore their underwear outside of their clothes or half-way down their butt's? Or that every hip hop group got to yell out, "wave your hands in the air like you just don't care!", or that boy bands all sang songs without playing their own music? There's a whole five minutes worth of memories.

Where or how do you listen to 80's music (i.e just on your own in your bedroom or in nightclubs?)

I live very close to work so I listen to an 80's station at work all day and then I'll throw in a CD into my truck on long trips. I'll put on a CD while I'm online like I have right now (The Best Of Asia). :)
