Hmm, what happened here? Last week there was a number of topics. Now after a week of being away, they're all gone?

Well, this place seems right up my alley. As much of an ear I have for newer stuff, I just can't shake the 80s!! Big big fan of NWOBHM. Hell, I still go vinyl hunting every so often (well I should say when the wife and kids let me! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif).

Hey, any old Prodigy members here??

Hello Sledge, you can change how far back the topics you want to view. When you first come onto the Heavy Metal page, look near the top right. I think its defaulted to show topics for the last twenty days. After that time expires with no activity, you no longer can see the topic. You can still retrieve it by changing the default.
So, name off some of your favorite bands. This forum hasn't saw a lot of activity lately and really needs a boost. BTW, welcome to the board. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//gene.gif

[ahem] Run off some favs??...UG!! My "favorite" is the genre itself; Heavy Metal! Too many years and bands to squeeze at the top [favorite].

Some bands; Pentagram, Winterhawk, Hollow Ground, Hammer Witch, Bleak House, Manilla Road, Persian Risk, Trouble, Angel Witch, Witchfynde, Witchfinder General, Trespass, Cloven Hoof, Trilogy, Bengal Tigers, Tank, Diamond Head, Sweet Savage, Savage, Tysondog...ah that's good for now.

I love unknown/garage bands. Not that all of the ones there listed are. The major label and/or "biggies" I guess just weren't enough. I started with the biggies Maiden, Priest, Anthrax, Rocktallica, Metal Church, Overkill, etc. The late 80s is when the hunger inside just wasn't getting fulfilled. So I "went back" into the early 80s and dipped into the NWOBHM. Man did the flood gates open from there!! Thousands and thousands of bands in the 80s that will satisfy any Heavy Metalhead anywhere. Unfortunatly, most fans I meet limit themselves to what the big record companies release.

Needless to say I...well...WAS a collector. I still am a collector for the most part. Getting older, married and kids pretty much put a stop to those deep pockets to collect like I would. But I did manage to squeeze 10+ years of collecting and came out with a decent size collection of mega-classics.

I don't know hardly any of the bands mentioned though I may have heard one or two songs by a few of them. Are most of those bands on Napster or some other similar service? The only thing is I don't care for the growling vomitting type of vocals a lot of heavy metal bands use, it seems more and more popular among them. Personally, I like to sing along and I can't if I don't know what the heck thay are saying, know what I mean? Anyways, you gave me a list of bands to check out. Thanx.

Welcome, Sledge! Great to have another Metal Fan on board! Outstanding! Well, you're right about the 80s and metal.. It was easy to find heavy metal in the music store. Now, it's nearly impossible. I have to special order most CDs I'm looking for. It's probably a good idea just to go onto cdnow.com because I'll get the things faster.. Well, welcome to the board. I'm sure we'll have some good metal conversations going here shortly. We could use a few more good metal fans so if you see any, throw 'em a link. Okay? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

It is kind of nice to have another metal-head around!!
Bands that I got in to were Overkill (met them in 89, have lots of pics!), Motorhead, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Helloween, Metallica.. and I of course loved Glam Metal as well, Ratt, Poison, Kix, Danger Danger, Whitesnake, Great White, Slaughter, Skid Row,... etc.... etc...

But my all time favorite band is KISS http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//gene.gif

Damn. Tinajo, if you're ever in New York - we've gotta go for a cruise! I haven't been able to blast hard rock and heavy metal in my car (with someone else IN IT) in a long time! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

I'll get the pics of me with Overkill scanned really soon!!! They show a much younger Tinajo... I think the pics are from 1987 or 88. I was about 14 or 15 years old.. But they are cool pics nonetheless!!!
I may do that tonight....

Mayhem,

UH, no I highly doubt any of those bands would be on something like Napster. But ya never know.

MOST of the bands are only found on vinyl. Some are just getting pressed on CD. Lots of record dealers, old labels, etc, are sick of the current garbage being released and are pressing the more rare classics on CD.

As for the growling vox, these are really before "Death Metal" came around. Actually these can be just as hard to get into. Very raw vox. I don't think so much the sound, but that these are a bunch of buds getting together and rockin. So they can sound a little off key and/or inexperienced. But that's not to say they are not good! I think they're great for the simple reason these songs are recorded in the early stages. The raw energy is forever there. Youth doesn't get old ya know. I guess kind of like "Kill'em All" when you listen to it. The energy and attitude is undeniable.

Yeh, I would tell any Metalhead to go for some early stuff. Hey, try "NWOBHM-79 Revisited". Metal Blade released it back in '90. Its 2CDs of all different bands from the era. A very decent taste of the early years.
