View Full Version : Who was the best metal band of the 80's?
For me, it is a tie between Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. They were doing it before nearly anyone else. They have did it constantly and consistantly, even to this day (I admit we haven't heard from Sabbath in a while, but we will). They helped many other bands get started. Former members have moved onto other projects that have turned out awesome, while the band(s) moved on. Think about the bands that have been influenced by these legends. And most importantly, listen to any one of their albums. Even the ones that weren't so great will blow you away. You will not see a better concert than JP. No band has "came back" stronger than ever like BS has.
These are my picks, what are yours?

Skid row, although not really metal till the ninties were the best metal band ever, i my opinion. Iron maiden and Metallica were also very good, but in the end it would be Skid Row.

DefLepFan 7-12-00, 07:23 PM Def Leppard is the best group of all times!!!!! THEY RULE!!!!!
RetroMan 7-13-00, 11:46 AM My pick is IRON MAIDEN. they changed my life.
During high school we lived and breathed the music of the Irons. 24 hours a day!
On the weekends we would hire a rehearsal room, invite friends from school, and play Maiden covers ALL DAY (as Bryan Adams says- till my fingers bled) I will never forget those times.
I was so fixated with them that when I saw Steve Harris drinking a can of 7-up in a magazine photo, I started drinking it to, thinking it would make me a better bass player - can you believe that?? ha! crazy!

Even though he is not all out metal, though Brutal Planet,is his new album certainly is, there is noone like the great Alice Cooper, and you haven't seen a concert until you have seen Alice live. His North American Tour dates should be out this coming week and I will post them here, when we know for sure. Long live the Coop!
------------------
Skid Row! Definatly!
(that maiden sold out madison square garden is no proof of beeing the best metal band of the 80s, more a proof of beeing mainstream....perhaps even more than metallica and mainstream is not metal. But at least they're doing their thing)
------------------
Rock 'n' Roll
God, there are so many! Metallica will always top my 80's metal list. Also Anthrax, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Motorhead.....
*sigh*
Makes me kinda miss the old days.

RetroMan 7-24-00, 09:21 AM Yep there coming to Australia - I'm going to go no matter what! I'm going to try and get up the front of the stage and get Steve Harris to sign the scratch plate off my bass - he's my all time hero don't you know! I think he is the best bass player in the universe etc etc.
Yeah I know distance it a bit of a problem, but If I start driving now, I should get to your place in time?! we can't have you missing out now, can we?? /ubb/smilies/smile.gif

That is definitely a tough call... one of which I don't think I can make! There were so many awesome bands back then. Some of my favourites that really outshone the rest:
Iron Maiden
King Diamond
Omen
Sacred Reich
Slayer
Fates Warning
Accept
OverKill
Running Wild

Amy Livin 7-27-00, 12:31 AM Would anyone concider Yngwie Malmsteen as heavy metal? Well if not, my choice is Metallica. But Yngwie comes first for me. And just to make Blue happy, I have to mention Iron Maiden /ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Iron Maiden was THE best. They never tried to glam it up like the other posers. Besides, their album art was and always will be the best. I don't know how many stoned hours I spent looking at every detail of "Number of the Beast". I heard their latest song in Vegas a month ago but haven't heard it since, it sounded pretty good.
Honorable Mention goes out to Suicidal Tendencies for punk metal and WASP for being WASP.

Tydestra 6-24-02, 06:18 AM For me its an equal 2way tie:
Iron Maiden
Metallica
And special :thumb: to Slayer and Skid Row ;)
Duece5150 6-24-02, 06:44 AM Ozzy...Ozzy...Ozzy!!!
Ugly Kid Jeff72 6-24-02, 08:26 AM many will disagree, but early 80's i say DoKKeN. their album sales didn't do as well as Poison or Jovi but they weren't a complete throwaway. they never really sold me as an actual hair band even though they tried. their music was more thought out then sum of the other bands of that time.
L8 80's gotta go with MeTaLLicA they just rul'd everything. there wasn't any one band that could out sell those guys. i seen every show in St. Louis from 88-91' all sold out ! they were a band that left you standin' outside lookin' to buy a tick't. after that black album though i lost intrest in them.
UKJ72':banger:
Hard to pick - but I finally decided to go with Slayer  That band really made my neck hurt during the late 80s
Christine 6-24-02, 10:59 AM I definitely have to go with Skid Row (because Slave To The Grind, although released in 1991, was definitely a metal album.) But if that doesn't count, I'll say Guns 'N Roses because they rocked! :banger:
Cartoon_Chris 6-24-02, 01:12 PM Exclusively covering 1980-89 output, I give it to Maiden. They were close to Priest in the first half of the '80s, but pulled ahead in the second half. All-time I would say Priest edges Maiden because of their AWESOME late '70s output.

No words needed! :D
xxmindcrimexx 7-05-02, 12:05 AM Def Leppard and Queensryche

Now WHAT made me think that's who you'd vote for? ;)
PS - Leppard wasn't metal. More like a hair band.
