There was almost no activity when I first asked this and other questions and now there is some activity in here. So, lets get things going.
What was THE definitive metal cd of the 80s for you and why? I know for true fans this is a tough one, nearly impossible to narrow it down to just one, but try.

For me, my love of metal and hard rock predates the 80s, but I was really young. And there are many albums that defined metal for me in the 80s. But, the one that just grabbed me and negated ant chance I had of being a true Michael Jackson fan was Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz!! Randy Rhodes's guitar wizardy mixed with Ozzy's unique vocal sound extremely well. The energy and emotion I felt when I listened to that tape were to be unmatched for a very long time. Every song is great and can stand alone as a classic, even the 'Dee' outtakes. After that tape was released, I dove head first into metal and hard rock. I had several hundred tapes and was one of the first in my neighborhood to get a cd player! This was all a direct result of listening to Ozzy's first solo album, followed closely by his second one, 'Diary of a Madman'.

Well, that's mine, what's yours?

For me, it would be either "Shout at the Devil" by Motley Crue or "Appetite for Destruction" from GN'R. "Shout" was the first time I can remember hearing Motley Crue & that's really what got me into the whole hard rock/heavy metal genre. "Appetite" is for obvious reasons; it's GN'R!!!

Love to all,

For now I would say Guns and Roses. I got to see them with Metallica and Faith No More around 1991 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. I rained most of the timehttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif but we still had a blast!! GnR were AWESOME! I just sigh when I think of the good 'ol days

Let's see. My first Metal Tape was Twisted Sister with "I Wanna Rock" on it. Next, was Ozzy "Blizzard of Oz". Next, and what really started me into metal, S.O.D.: Stormtroopers of Death! Next up? Metallica - Master of Puppets. Then?! Wow! Anthrax: Among the Living! Boy was I hooked! Then! Wow! Death! I was completely consumed! Oh, wait! Who's next? King Diamond! Wow, I had so much great music, I could never stop listening. What next? Hmm. Well. That would be "Latin Freestyle". But that's a whole 'nother story. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

P.S. A few years ago, I discovered Megadeth. That's what really got me back into Metal these days. Of course, soon after I started listening to all my ex-girlfriend's favorite music. 80s Hard Rock. Poison, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, etc, etc, etc. I have so many favorites.. But heavy metal? You know what my favorites are.. They're up above...

Anthrax - Among The Living
Anthrax - Spreading The Disease
Metallica - And Justice For All
Slayer - South of Heaven
Guns & Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Overkill - Under The Influence
Megadeth - Peace Sells.. (But who's Buying?)

Lets see:
Motley Crew's SHOUT AT THE DEVIL
GnR APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION
Metallica RIDE THE LIGHTNING
Tesla MECHANICAL RESONANCE
Cinderella NIGHT SONGS
Dio LAST IN LINE
Whitesnake WHITESNAKE
Def Leppard PYROMANIA

If I had to chose ONE to be THE Metal Album, it would be SHOUT AT THE DEVIL. For me that was the big push into METAL. Looks that kill is still one of the best songs ever. Too bad they dont make records like these anymore!

All great choices, Tina! Except Slayer. I have no idea what that album sounds like. Bah! Okay, you can hit me now! And Jasper - I agree. "Looks that Kill" is an awesome song. They really don't make anything like that anymore. Why not? It had such cool sound...

My ultimate album is not technically a metal album but it is from the band that probibly inspired more metal bands than any other(including Metallica,Anthrax, and many more)and it's the Misfits album"Walk Among Us".While catagorized as Punk, the misfits had a heavy sound that fits into the metal catagory quite nicely(especially their "Earth A.D album)
Some of my other picks would be....

Motley Crue-Shout at the Devil
Twisted Sister-Stay Hungry
Motorhead-Ace of Spades
Slayer-Reign in Blood
New York Dolls(not 80's but lets give credit where credit is due)
Guns-n-Roses-A F D

There's so many more but this will do for now.

Seas of blood, bury life
Smell your death as it burns
Deep inside of you
Abacinate, eyes that bleed
Praying for the end of
Your wide awake nightmare
Wings of pain, reach out for you
His face of death staring down,
Your blood running cold
Injecting cells, dying eyes
Feeding on the screams of
The mutants he's creating
Pathetic harmless victims
Left to die
Rancid Angel of Death
Flying free
[ Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead
Infamous butcher,
Angel of Death Angel of Death

Concerts... I remember my older sister going with me to see Rainbow with dio on vocals. I remember we dressed up in these T-shirts we found at Kmart with colored rainbows on them and she bought wine that we drank out of plastic glasses in the parking lot. Maybe not the best show, but it got me hooked on metal and music.

Metallica's Ride the Lightning. I'm quite proud of myself actually - I got that album and took it over to my friend's house, proclaiming "This stuff is awesome!". That was a year or two before anybody ever heard of Metallica. Yeah, I should be a talent scout, paid millions for my opinions, I know.

Or else a referee at mud wrestling matches - it's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it.

But it's hard to find anything better than Randy's Diary of a Madman. When GFTPM came out with sheet music for it, I, well, wasn't heard from for quite some time. Down in my basement, ya know http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

thought about it awhile and as there were so many albums the one that stands out for me was DEF LEPPARD
pyromania when I heard "rock of ages" to me it was the defining sound of 80's metal
