I, too, have noticed that quite a few of the songs that I loved and were big hits in the 80s don't make a whole of sense to me now! Duran Duran's "The Reflex" is a good example! I guess when you are young, you don't spend a great deal of time pondering the meaning of songs, but as you age, you tend to notice such things more often! :)

Sometimes though, because you're older, you are able to look into the lyrics a bit deeper and realize the meanings behind the songs. I have discovered HEAPS of stuff about songs now, that I had no idea what they were about when I was little.

Bington, your going to have to ask Midge Ure on the meaning behind Vienna - the lyrics really are "mystic & soulful" it could mean any number of things - only the songwriter holds the secrets ;)

For me its the other way around, the older I get, the more I see and get happy about the song :D

I have noticed the true meaning of certain lyrics now more than I did when I was younger. It still doesn't change my love of them though. :D

I think it IS age. When we were young we tend to listen to the beat and instrumentation of a song more than the lyrics. We were more into partying with the music. Who cares what the song was about as long as it moved you. When we're older we tend to listen to the lyrics more closely and try to get the meaning of the song.

Sarg...that was Su-weet! I don't think that I could have put it better myself nor do I think I need to add anything to what you just said! :)

Bington, you can e-mail Midge Ure at midge@midgeure.com to find out the true meaning of "Vienna". (sorry I can't help plugging his e-mail addy, no he hasn't responded to me yet, but it takes time, it took Chris Difford of Squeeze a few months before he e-mailed me.)

I never understood (and still don't) know the full meaning to XTC's song, "Pink Thing". It's either about a *ehem you know what guys :p * or a baby.

When I was 10, I had no real idea what kind of 'action' Poison was referring to in "I Want Action". I thought they just meant general excitement. Obviously I wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics...
