Hi Mars, how are you :) I didn't know it was directed at a world event as such, I've always known it as just a German protest song against nuclear warfare in general.
The german '99 Luft ballons' directly translated is '99 Air balloons', and then changed to 99 'Red' Balloons (to make sence in english). The releasing of red balloons is supposed to represent an anti nuke message
I guess if it was focused on a world event it would have to be the H bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, thus ending WW2? - am I right? do I get a prize? :D

The song was inspired by an incident, where the US military mistakenly identified a couple of geese (this is true!) as a (Russian) nuclear strike! :eek: (I know...happens to me all the time... :D )

I'm not sure if that's the event You mean, or the protest against nuclear bombs in general?

Yeah, but they were like "Attack Geese" (specially trained in covert op's) or something. :D

I recently learned from the KGB, they were the real reason behind the crash of Maverick and Goose! :eek: Supposedly, Goose was mistaken for a defected Russian agent... :rolleyes:
The story goes, Reagan had an eagle training program running at the time and the whole story was covered up, by both sides!
