View Full Version : football (soccer) themes
djdaffy1227 10-26-02, 03:06 AM I have just downloaded some Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs songs that I saw actually charted high in the UK charts. I have a question, Is football (soccer) so big that these crappy songs can chart that high? The "Glory Glory Man United" is almost offensive to Americans using "Glory glory Halleluia" as the tune  I thought it was bad that The Chicago Bears charted at #41 with "The Superbowl shuffle" here in the States. :yucky:
This thread is just for fun and not meant to offend anyone. :)
It's amazing how this stuff works (blech! to Man U. and Spurs though) LOL.
I remember in the '70s that Chelsea had Blue Is The Colour in the charts (or at least on Top of the Pops). That was fairly terrible also.
Over the past decade or so the World Cup has spawned some good tracks though. New Order's World In Motion is a good example. James reworked their song "Low" to "Goal" also.
wavemaster 10-28-02, 10:30 PM Daffy, praise your luck that you don't speak German...otherwise, you might feel tempted to download some tracks which were recorded together with the German national soccer team, and boy, this is purest crap.
aussieardiles 11-12-02, 09:29 PM Yeah I'm kinda new on here but I love some of the soccer songs (only about my team though, which happens to be Spurs). They are dodgy but fun.
As 90% of them relate to an FA Cup or World Cup it has memories. I have bought a whole CD of Spurs songs. Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur, Ossie's dream, We're off to Wembley cause we beat the Arsenal and the coup de grace which is the legitimate pop single released by two players in Glenn Hoddle (god) and Chris Waddle.
Can there be anything better for a Spurs fan than to beat Arsenal? :D

and who could forget Ricky Martin's "Cup of life". Actually 9 out of ten Americans didn't even know it was about soccer
The Danish national team made a smash hit here in DK in the 80's which is still being played whenever the boys in Red and White are playing important matches :D GO DENMARK
djdaffy1227 1-10-03, 01:07 PM I just downloaded a couple more. I got "This time (we'll get it right)" by England world cup squad and "All the way" by England Football team and the "sound" of Stock Aitken and Waterman. The SAW one really isn't that bad, however, "This time..." was just as bad as the first ones I downloaded  It's fun just knowing I have them I guess.
All the UK Soccer anthems that we get subjected to year in, year out are total crap, basically!
The worst of the bunch are 'Fly The Flag' by the Englang 1982 World Cup Squad, and 'Ozzies Dream' also the same year by the Tottenham Hotspur FA Cup Squad.
My personal US favourite had to be 'We Wear The Silver, We Wear The Black' by the 1986 LA Raiders squad:
'They say we intimidate and maybe we do.....committed to excellence through and through'
Actually, I will make an exception to the rule that all the Soccer songs are crap.
New Order's 1990 World Cup song 'World In Motion' with John Barnes on vocals, remains the best Football anthem in my humble opinion.
djdaffy1227 1-10-03, 04:46 PM Fortunately though, the US ones (except "The superbowl shuffle") don't chart nationally :D That's what kills me about the UK ones.
Prefab Sprouter 1-13-03, 09:34 AM For me New Order's "World in Motion" is the SECOND best Football anthem. I happen to prefer the song "THREE LIONS" by Baddiel and Skinner which was brought out by the English Football team for the Euro 96 Championships!
Its coming home.....................Its coming Home................It's coming........................... Footballs Coming Home!
There are a number of Songs about the Irish Football team which came out in the late 80's but I hate them all!!!!!
djdaffy1227 7-16-03, 11:33 AM Back to this old topic. I just downloaded "Anfield rap" by Liverpool FC. I'm ashamed to admit it but it really isn't as bad as the others  That's not saying much.
Yeah, and check out John Barnes on vocals. He was a pretty good rapper even if Steve McManaman was crap.
Prefab Sprouter 7-22-03, 09:29 AM Oh Chopper, well at least Barnsey was good for something cause he couldnt pass a football, thats for sure. I think that was the Year that Man U beat them in the cup with the God Cantona scoring!!! :D
whistledog 4-18-05, 11:33 PM My all-time fave Footy theme has to be Carnaval De Paris and Carnaval 2002 by Dario G. Now that's what I call music :thumb:
Another one I liked from (I believe 2001) was called We're on the Ball by Ant & Dec. Only song by those guys I actually really cared for.
There was also one I remember from last year called "Come on England" by 4-4-2. It was like a remake of Come on Eileen by Dexys. It wasn't really very good
I bet if someone decided to make a book about football anthems they could make a fortune (hint hint 80sTrivia ;) )
Rigormortis 4-19-05, 02:58 AM IIRC, much of the "Blue" on ELO's "Out Of The Blue" album is there in honor of Jeff Lynne's favorite soccer team. I guess this is what happens when a professional writes soccer tunes as opposed to some drunk using a crayon and a bar napkin. ;)
On a slightly different note, this was heard being sung at Liverpool recently:
'Don't blame it on the Hamann,
don't blame it on the Finnan,
don't blame it on Biscan,
BLAME IT ON TRAORE!!
he just can't,
he just can't,
he just can't control his feet...'

I always loved the 'Cheer Up Peter Reid' song to the tune of 'Daydream Believer' & whenever Sky Tv turn up at Vicarage Road the haunting chant of 'Andy Gray's a homosexual' in honour of his 'foul' on our goalie whilst scoring in the '83 FA cup final.

'Daydream Believer' is without doubt one of the great all time classic football songs, no questions. Always brings a smile to my face when I hear it sung!
whistledog 4-22-05, 09:40 AM Just thought of another good one: All Together Now 2004 by The Farm with the SFX Boys Choir. The choir and the football additions IMO made it sound much better than the 1990 original
