Born in Cordell Kentucky. He has been playing Mandolin since the age of 5. He was in the 70's group "The Country Gentlemen" before going solo in 1980. He married fellow 80's country artist Sharon White (of the Whites) in 1981. He won the Horizon award in 1982 for the best up and coming artist. In fact he won Entertainer of the year in the 1985 CMA's, in a rare year that Alabama didn't win. He had a huge string of hit singles with 30 top 40 country hits between 1981-1992, with no less than 11 #1 songs. Some of them include his biggest hit "Cajun Moon" "Crying my heart out over you", "Uncle Pen" written by Bill Monroe, and "Lovin' only me". I really like his style, it is what today is called "Americana" or "Bluegrass". He is still making records today without much radio play. His music isn't pop enough for the country format to play today. What songs do you like by him, or what else can you add?
I can add that he had a hit called "Honey", my mother would come to our house and play it to death. I can still tell you this:
Honey....Honey....Honey won't you open that door?
This is your sweet Daddy don't ya love me no more?
It's cold outside, make me sleep on the floor
Honey won't you open that door? :yucky:
He actually has a tune out now, Halfway Home Cafe, that is getting some airplay around here. It's about a waiter who witnesses different scenes in people's lives that play out in the Cafe. Heard it?

Actually about a week ago I was downloading all the #1 country hits of the 80's and "Honey" was one of them :) #1 in 1984.
BTW, I have his new song on the CD's I get every month but I haven't listened to it.

Ricky Skaggs is an extremely talented instrumentalist and songwriter. In addition to the songs mentioned above, one that I particularly liked was "Country Boy" in 1985. Lots of great "pickin'" in that tune!
