Yes..I deleted an important file. 'my downloads' I had made it a shortcut on my desktop and I decided to delete the shortcut since I don't use it much. Now I can't find the file. I am thinking maybe it was not a shortcut afterall, but the file itself. I even emptied 'Recycle Bin' Is that file lost for good?

Oh Kitty...
Usually, you can delete a shortcut without afflicting the file/folder itself - a shortcut is nothing more than a link from the desktop to the respective file/folder (at least it should be like this, but who knows - that's Windows...:D).
Click on "Start" on the lower left corner of the screen and select "Search" from the menu. Enter the name of the file/folder and let the computer search in all partitions/harddrives. When you find the file, you can create a shortcut again. If not, you have actually cleared the bin, and all data is lost - you have to create the file again.
I hope that you don't have cleared all your nasty pics...
What pics??
I deleted the entire folder. I did what u said and it is not there.
Somma bitch...:irked:

In this case, you haven't created a shortcut but actually placed the entire folder on your desktop - bummer.
You will recognize a shortcut by the little symbol with the arrow in the lower left of the respective icon - keep that in mind next time you're going to delete something from your desktop.
And you know exactly well which pics...
There are programs out there that can recovered deleted files, but unfortunately I can't find any free ones and the ones that are trial-ware has such small recovery size limitations that they would be useless to you. If I can find anything, I will let you know though.
The last one that I used was called UNDELETE, but that was back in the 80's. It was bulletproof and always worked.
I have found SOME for Windows long file names over the years, but they never seem to work worth a damn.
