View Full Version : Where was I when...
Purple Velvet Bohemian 1-23-01, 04:09 PM John Lennon was shot, i was at my Grandmother's house. I remember we were watching TV and they broke in and told about his murder. I was so sad because he had young sons who were going to miss him. I was too young (12) to understand that a legend had been wiped out, but I was sad.
When Pres. Reagan got shot I was getting off the bus, and my mom was at the stop waiting for me. We were going to my Grandma's house, and she told me the President had been shot, and then we went to my Grandma's house and saw the footage of him getting shot, over, and over, and over again.
I was skipping school the day the Challenger exploded. I was on my way to visit my old high school when I heard on the radio that it had exploded. When I got to my old high school and saw my friends I told them about it, everyone was so upset. I went back to my current high school, and told everyone there, and some people wouldn't believe me until they announced it over the PA.
Well there are the three major ones I can remember. Anyone else?

*Just when my life starts to get sweet, I become a diabetic!*
My school class was at the Kennedy Space Center when the space shuttle "Challenger" exploded in 1986. (I grew up in Florida, and field trips during launches were common)
I remember being so horrified...especially because a teacher was on board... everyone was crying... I was 13 years old, and it was the first and last time I had ever been there.
I remember when AIDS was announced on TV, I was sitting at home in my living room with my family... and I remember being so scared that we were all going to die soon from this horrible epidemic.
Hmmm... I'll keep thinking of other major events...

djpromogirl1 1-31-01, 12:31 PM Where were you when you first heard the song that would kill 80's hard rock as you knew it- "smells like teen spirit" ? I was in my car at the intersection of Highland and Hollywood Blvd. I thought "what the hell?" Hmmm. Who knew. Now I miss the grunge compared to half the shit that's out now.
AAAAHHH!!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00buaaah.gif I KNOW you didn't just say that you miss GRUNGE!! I am so glad that grunge is on its way out, mainly because, though alot of this new shit isn't worth listening to, alot of it is starting to get that 80s feel back... and isn't that what we all want anyway? Grunge was the death of all of my favorite music and I am really pissed off about it..

djpromogirl1 2-01-01, 03:15 PM Tinajo,
i was inferring that compared to what i have on my playlist here at the station, eminem, nelly furtado, garbage, goo goo dolls, blink182 et. al. grunge don't suck that bad. i agree it killed many a great band including some that were just getting their start in the early 90's and kicked ass: hardline, unruly child, kik tracee. in fact, these bands were given horrible record reviews by the same correspondants who praised poison, motley, and warrant. why did they turn? i don't know, wish i did. anyhow, i posted the "where were you" question because i will always remember that moment as the day that killed rock as i knew it. it also killed a style i dug bigtime- longhair cutie-boyz. good luck finding 'em now. anyhow tina, i'm with ya, but in no way can soundgarden or alice in chains suck as bad as the bloodhound gang.

80sBassGodd 2-06-01, 03:49 PM I remember when I first heard of Nirvana. I was at work driving a truck to pick up some supplies and I was listening to that bastion of heavy metal radio...ZROCK! Some dweeb called up and asked Mad Max Hammer if he would play "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Max just ripped him a new one and asked him how he could listen to "that pansy assed crap"! It was classic! From then on things began to change and more and more. How sad.

gogogadget 2-08-01, 01:27 AM Hmmm.... I don't think I am going to be a very popular person in this club http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I am a fan of "newer" music than most of you. My favorite bands, most of you probably have never heard of them. I haven't heard of most of the bands you guys rave about. You have to understand that I was "growing up" in the 80's. I didn't really get any musical tastes of my own untill the 90's. What I remember musically about the 80's. . . Michael Bolton and Whitney Huston. A little bit of Michael Jackson, but that was what my mom listened to. Anyway, I was born the day John Belushi died. That has always been my claim to fame. That is really the only event where I know where I was when it happened. Oh well, I hope you all don't hate me now http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I don't have long hair either http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

Of those events mentioned (not counting the Nirvana thing) I can only remember where I was when the Challenger exploded - I was in our living room watching the transmission of the launch.
Damn...I can't even remember when I realised that John Lennon had died - I guess I was too young when it happened - I had only just started to develop my interest in music at time...
I definitely remember when AIDS was brought to the public's attention...I did major research on it back then...horrified at what this might mean for me and everybody else....
Ronald Reagan was shot at? Nah..just kidding http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif....I guess such things are harder for us Europeans to remember - the specifics anyway - since it's not our President...
A few more events...
The fall of the Berlin Wall...1989...wow...what a day/night...my brother actually drove to Berlin as soon as he heard...
The release of Mandela....I'm getting old...can't remember when this was... oops...
Live Aid in London 1985 (I should have been there!) http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I was in Luxembourg and watched it on telly all day and most of the night.
Ahem...the wedding of Charles & Diana in 1981 http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
The student uproar in Beijing...those images will stay with me for a long time....
Okay okay I'll stop.... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00grin.gif
Silveradocruiser 2-23-01, 12:53 PM I remember Febuary 28 1986. My Dad woke me up, and told me our Prime minister Olof Palme had been shot! The whole country was a mess for a few days...
The scary part is that they still, after 15 years, haven't found out who killed him!!

H@ns (I'm NOT the bad guy from Die Hard!)
There we go! You and me silverado! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif.... I was just thinking if I was going to bring that up or not but you did it for me. I don't remember the actual event, I mean I was 4 years old, but I remeber being at the daycare-center hearing the people talking about it and talking about it with my parents the day after it happened. He was shot at a sunday right?
I think that's my first pretty clear memory.
I'm not to much into this subject but I think it was for the best. He was a communist anyway (basically) and allthough nobody deserves to die, the country could probably do better without him. I know it's a cruel thing to say but that's just how i feel.
I too remember the berlin wall falling! I, as a 7 year old kid, remember it as a bad thing though! =)... I had no clue what it was all about, I just remember seeing this scene on TV were lots of people were sitting on the wall, not wanting them to tear it down.

I like more thoughtful sentences... how bout you? Do you speak latin or do you just like crazy phrases.

Silveradocruiser 3-04-01, 01:01 PM Naah Mud, I don't speak much latin...-So few Romans around since the fall of the Empire...

Sunlover 3-11-01, 01:52 PM Reagan assassination attempt: 10th grade typing class. The teachers were more freaked out then we were, comparing it to the JFK assassination.
Challenger explosion: college junior...got up early to watch the live coverage. "OMG, what happened?"
John Lennon murder: Sometime in high school. I remember everyone being upset, but I didn't even know until later just who John Lennon was!
AIDS: The Ryan White coverage was a big thing here in Indiana. I was a sophomore in college not far from Kokomo where the whole kicking-him-out-of-school thing occurred, and I thought the people who were doing this were so ignorant. Now, being a parent, I'm not so sure I wouldn't do the same thing if my children were in school with someone who had a virtually unknown killer disease. I would hope I would handle it better.
Royal Wedding: high school sophomore. I had a friend who was REALLY into it....bought all kinds of souvenier type items.
Iranian hostage crisis: Wasn't that 1981 right after Reagan took office that they were released? 444 days.
I guess that's it.
Merydith1973 3-11-01, 09:44 PM When Challenger blew up I was watching it on TV. When I went to school I told my teacher he called me a liar and then 5 minutes later the principle announced it over the PA and all the kids looked at him because of what he said to me and he got all red and apologized...I have never heard of a teacher doing that before or since! It was the day I knew I could get that dork...and I did 6 yrs later when I walked into his class and told his students (my little sister included) to not listen to a word he said!! It was a great day of all students everywhere who had a bad teacher.

Nintendofan86 3-15-01, 11:00 AM On February 21,1988,I saw the news when TV Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart confessed to everybody that he was at the motel hanging out with a prostitute in Louisiana and here's my impersonation:"I have sinned against you my lord"When I saw that report, everyone was crying like they lost their shirts in a dice game.Prostitutes and TV Evangelism don't mix.Thank you.

tupper66 3-17-01, 10:50 PM Cripes, I think I'm missing some MAJOR chunks of memory from my early years! The only one I remember from those listed so far is the Challenger explosion, and then it's not even the tragedy itself, per se.... I just remember sitting at the supper table and blurting out a joke some of the kids at school were telling: "What does NASA mean? Needs Another Seven Astronauts"-- and my dad going absolutely ballistic on me. I didn't even get the damn joke, I was just repeating it, for the love of god. It's weird I can remember all these other bizarre, obscure things from that decade, but not the major news stuff. I do remember MTV coming out-- we didn't have cable at the time and my brother and I had to go to this fat, obnoxious kid's house to watch it-- we thought Toto's "Rosanna" was ~heavy metal~. (omg, what a couple nerds we were!) Speaking of that, I do have one very vivid 80s memory that completely changed my outlook on music in one sitting: my friend Patty and I were watching this half-hour video show on basic tv. They played a new video-- Van Halen's "Jump"-- and we both started gagging and whining about how ~GROSS~ heavy metal was, and how all those metal bands were full of grody, greasy-haired 'scums' who sang about devil worship and other bad things. We both had a VERY rigid view of what 'good' music was-- strictly mainstream pop, and nothing with a hard edge, for sure. Anyway, as we sat there dissing the video, it got to the part where Eddie's doing his solo at the keyboard... and he turns to the camera... and he smiled that little-boy smile... and I'm telling you, Patty and I INSTANTLY became believers. I remember it so clearly-- both of us shutting up mid-rant, staring gape-mouthed at the tv... then going nuts. "Oh my god!! He's beautiful! He's wonderful! Look at his beautiful face! Did you SEE that SMILE?? Did you SEE it?????" Instantly we were infatuated, drooling idiots over Eddie Van Halen. We still thought David Lee Roth was gross and "euw, the bassist is fat and looks like a troll", but it opened a door for us: if someone as angelic and dreamy as Eddie could be playing in this group, it couldn't be ALL bad. Flash forward a few months and we're true heavy metal fans. (Speaking of heavy metal, btw, my very favorite is Judas Priest-- no one compares!!!) But that one glimpse of Eddie's smile really was the pivotal moment in making me more open minded toward different kinds of music. So basically, yeah-- I can drone on and on about the fine details of Eddie Van Halen smiling in "Jump", but can't remember Ronald Reagan getting shot. Hmm. --Sue

cultleader 3-21-01, 08:04 AM I was actually lucky enough to see mtv come on the air.I was at my cousins house(His was one of the first houses in Maple Hts. Ohio to get cable, and his was the first in our family to get it.)I just remember sitting in his basement staring at the Tv thinking that this was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.(I coincedently also saw my first soft core porn on that tv,anyone remember"Joy of Flying"on H.B.O)
I remember hearing about the Challenger explosion in Music class, they came over the P.A and told us,and my music teacher actually cried.
I don't remember where I was when Lenon Died, but I was sitting in my parents living room when they anounced on the news that Sid Vicious died(I know that was '79 but I still remember)

modeslave 3-26-01, 12:40 PM Let's see:
August 1, 1981: I was right in front of my TV to see this "new 24/7 video channel". Of course, now, IMO, it sucks mostly, but M2 "kindasorta" reminds me of the old days of the original MTV.
LiveAid: 1985, if my memory serves me correctly. What an awesome day of mega TV watching!! I was glued to the set ALL DAY, and I was on the phone with my best friend from HS, because we were soooo into Wham!, and we just screamed when they performed...*laughs*.
Shuttle explosion: 11th grade, in Social Studies class. They announced it over the loudspeakers at my school, and it was one of the creepiest days. We were watching a taped program in SS class, and our teacher switched it off to live TV, and they just kept showing the explosion over and over and over again...
May 31, 1987: My graduation (excape) from HS AND...the year of those gross locusts!!!! They were EVERYWHERE!!! UGH!
I'm probably leaving a lot out, but those moments stick out in my mind. :-)

"I'm one of the devout..." Depeche Mode "Sacred"
As for the Challanger, I was standing in line for lunch when my friend told me. She was in a different science class than me and they saw it live...what they must have felt as it was happening was too horrifying to imagine.
As for Nirvana I was in college, my junior year. But what blew my mind was seeing Pearl Jam's "Alive" I became an instant fan. Kurt Cobain's helplessness with his own pain was his downfall. As for Eddie Vender, he saved himself by empathizing his pain with others - which is why I always like them better.
The first MTV music video awards, remember that?

That was a scary event. The police, FBI, and all kinds of other authories were out searching the people responsible. When it all started, stores were pulling all Tylenol products off the shelves. I think the makers of Tylenol lost a lot of money during that time because nobody wanted to use any kind of Tylenol products for a good while after that due to fear that more capsules could have been tamperd with. In fact because of that event, is why all bottles to this day have tamper proof seals on them.

I remember exactly where I was when the Challenger exploded. I was in 3rd grade early in the morning during recess when the principal of the school announced what had happened. At the time I didn't realize how big of an even this was, but at the same time I didn't shrug it of as just anything. This also happened 8 days after my little brother was born.
childofthe80s 4-23-01, 06:24 PM when the challenger exploded I was in Louisianna in english class at the high school i was going to...we were watching it on the Tv and watched it explode...the teacher started crying and so did I...I am from Florida sdo the whole thing made me sad...when Reagan was shot I was getting out of school..My mom picked us up and we were on our way home when the news cast came over the radio...

McDoodle 4-30-01, 04:05 AM The only one I'm remembering clearly is the Challenger explosion...and I feel bad becuse I can't remember the year....
I was in grade school (I was born in 1977), and they actually gathered the whole school in the gym to watch it live, since there was a teacher on the shuttle. After the explosion, a lot of kids were cheering, because many didn't know what happened. Neither did the teachers; Hell, people who were actually at Kennedy that day didn't know what was going on! Anyhow, the teachers were the first ones to figure it out. They quickly shut off the TVs and got all the kids back to class expeditiously, where the teachers then had to explain what happened. Man, that was a bad day.
I also remember the Berlin Wall coming down when I was in Junior High (7-8 grade)....but nothing as clearly as the Challenger..
Yup.. I was at the Kennedy Space Center on that day on a class field trip.. and you're right... we were all cheering too... and then we heard people gasping and crying... and the teachers explained it to us...
a very sad day... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif
