You know, it's funny, MTV. They don't really care about the quality of the music, orj the video they're sprawling out all over the nation. All they care about is teenagers. If the teens of today seem to like it, it's a winner. If not, trash it. Unfortunately, that's hipocracy. Even more unfortunate is that most teens allow themselves to be sucked into that trap. If everyone else thinks it's cool, they think it's cool. And, they have no idea what actual quality music is. They just look for the girls shaking what the doctor gave 'em and guys with as much flashy jewelry and baggy pants as their millions will buy them. It's not about the music, it's about the image, and the image blinds everything else. Someone sould be singing about how they're gonna kill all the little white girls, and all the little white girls would listen to it because it had a good beat and the guy was either hot or wore lots of jewelry...

Sad but true...you're right on the money with that one. It's not the music they fall in love with, it's the artists image. Do you think all these boy bands would do just as well if they were a bunch of funky lookin' poorly dressed jabroni's? I think not.

You guys are SO RIGHT!
Most of todays music artists are about "Image" and whatever they can do for "Shock Value". There's going to be a time when teens are not shocked by the lyrics and the image of an artist, and really begin to hear the music for what it is.

Kids have always followed the image of an artist, and wanted to imulate them. That's always happened.

Lyrics that surprise or shock the kids are "cool"....for awhile, then it gets old like anything else that you've heard a million times.
Artists play their instruments and drop their pants (or nothing at all) on stage, and their a cool band.
After awhile, it's like "who cares"!

Just my opinion!

Yes... Roemello is all about "image".. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//EGO.gif

Image played a big part in the 80's too, though... remember? We thought the music was great, too...

Kids today are saying the same thing about their music..

Yep. My parents had some songs that they forbid me to play in the house (White Horse by Laid Back). So, naturally I had to play it. I was a wee bit of a rebel.

Yes, our 80's music had an image, but the real difference between our genre and the current one is that the image of the 80's complimented the music and didn't overshadow it's quality. Todays music is all image and little to no quality in the music.

Today's music just plain stinks! Back to the parents not liking your music thing, I was fortunate enough to have a Mom who liked my music. She was like a total Adam Ant fan. My dad...well he just liked country and called all my fave bands a bunch of long haired hippies!

My father just kinda laughs at my 80's music http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif He's an old school rocker to the core (Rolling Stones, Beatles, Elvis, etc. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//rolleyes.gif ). My mother actually likes some of it like Bryan Adams, REM, and the like....my sister even managed to get her to have a tolerance for Prince http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Good to have somewhat open minded parents http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

My parents never hassled me about my music. My dad is a Rock-n-Roll fan...always has been, always will be. He HATES country/western. Mom will listen to anything really. They both loved my Def Leppard music! I was able to crank it as loud as I wanted to in the house and they didn't mind! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

My parents have never hassled me about my music, either. Or, at least, my mom hasn't. Mom developed a killer Morrissey impression when I was in my black clothes/moping phase... I didn't quite get the joke yet, and she did. I was always mortified when she went into her routine, usually using "Story of my Life." I'm still embarrassed just thinking about it!

Still, we share a lot of our musical tastes. She got me into Nanci Griffith, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Cheryl Wheeler, Alison Krauss, Sondheim (we played the Company and A Little Night Music soundtracks all the time when I was a kid) Emmylou Harris, the Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John, Judy Collins, Leonard Cohen, et al, and I got her into Tom Waits, R.E.M., Sarah MacLachlan, (actually, I bought her Touch and said, "here's something of hers that's not disgustingly overplayed!") Silver Jews, (Pavement side project) and Belle and Sebastian. I don't even like Belle and Sebastian! LOL!
