View Full Version : How embarrassed were you?
ImSoooSure 8-25-02, 02:54 AM Did any of your parents listen to country music in the 80s and it just embarrassed you to death? Mine loved it and I thought it was the worst thing in the world. If they took me and my friends anywhere I'd beg them not to listen to it. It wasn't until around 89-90 that I really started enjoying it. I heard "Nobody In His Right Mind Would Have Left Her" from Geroge Strait and loved it. Then I heard "The Dance" from Garth and I really started to get into some of it. Now...I don't like it very much again. I still love the stuff I did before but I can't get into any new artists. Most embarrassing country song my parents listened to in the 80s...ELVIRA I still can't hear that without turning red!
GIDDEE UP!!! BA DOOM BOP BA DOOM BOP BA NOW NOW!!!
HI HO SILVER, A- WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
My parents used to listen to country all the time and I actually like a lot of OLD country, well, if you can call 70s era and early 80s era country OLD. Don WIlliams, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, Barbara Mandrell, George Jones, etc.
But you are right, I would sorta act all offended if my friends were over and they had it on the radio!
LOSTNTHE80S 8-25-02, 07:05 AM I wasn't embarrassed about it really..we just had different tastes in music. I started getting interested in country music more towards the late 80's. I have some of the older stuff (along with the newer music) now in my music collection.
80sTrivia 9-03-02, 08:08 PM My dad used to listen to Ray Stevens! I remember we were having a family reunion and my dad put the Ray Stevens cassette on and started to play it at full blast!!! Songs such as "The Streak", "Amazania" and "The Chicken Song"!!! I was so embarrassed!!! :o
Caligula 9-03-02, 08:24 PM my father too was big on the old country music, charlie pride, don williams, freddie prince, which didn't really embarrass me as i figured he was old and everyone's parents liked that. what was embarrassing is when he tried to pretend he was up with todays music, and would decide to crank up ABBA or Boney M on the old car stereo now having the old dodge dart driving around with ABBA's SOS blasting out the windows was EMBARRASSING when your a 16 year old metalhead
Yes, Elvira was a little embrassing in the past, but now go to any bar and it's practically a sing along. ( Well, I know that's how it is around here)
I actually liked country from the 80's. It wasn't as poppy as it is now. OH , the good ole days. But I am actually someone who likes just about every kind of music.
And 80's Trivia the Chiken Song is actually a big thing around here. Sometimes that's the funniest dance, to see who is the drunkest and falls.
I guess being from Texas it's expected to like country, but believe me some don't. My son being one of them.
Iluvthe80s 9-03-02, 09:16 PM It's funny that you bring up this thread, Lisa. My dad is a total typical stereotype of what some people imagine Texans to be. Cowboy boots, driving a pickup truck, and only listens to Country music. He used to drive me and my little sister crazy. We would be outside playing and he would drive up in the truck. He would turn up the radio really loud and sing along. It was embarrasing when we were kids, but now I look back on it and it was just funny!
Even worse! Christian Country music!
Nah, it wasn't that bad, but it was embarrassing when friends came over.
BTW I love "Elvira"! :D
Darrianne 1-28-04, 09:53 PM Not me! I have loved country music since I was a small child. I can remember trying to sing Satin Sheets at the top of my lungs and my uncle telling me for-the-love-of-pete to pipe down! :D
I'm with Darrianne on this one. Never bothered me. When I was little it was the norm and I loved it. When I got older, I didn't really hang around the house a lot, but when Dad played it, I didn't care. He paid the bills, yanno? Wanna listen to rock? Go to your room, that's why it's there. ;) I tried to get my Dad to listen to some rock with me, but the only song he took to was "Goodbye" by Night Ranger.
My GOD!!! And to think, your my Valentine!!! I do like Leanne Rimes Older stuff. A Cowboys Sweetheart, Few other ones. BUT DAMN!!!! :p
nolanbuc 1-29-04, 12:43 AM My parents' country music did get old sometimes, but I was never really embarassed because I was so used to it. My dad even played guitar in a bluegrass band for awhile, so I heard alot of it. I was the only one in my family that didn't love country.
I think you were all pretty lucky! My parents listened to classical music, and ONLY classical music. Now, I quite like a bit of classical, but all the time? Country music would have been a welcome relief! Not that I'm really into it, but....
Slayergrrl 1-29-04, 11:16 AM Yes, Elvira was on thier list of embaressing songs! My Mom mostly listened to Motown, which i love now! But she also loves Patsy Cline, Hank Williams (Hey good lookin' whatcha got cooking) My Dad, loved Johnny Cash and Crystal Gayle. Oh ya, there was a period in the 80's where my Mom was on a full out Willie Nelson kick! If i ever hear that song "To all the girls i've loved before" i'm gonna :barf:
yes ELVIRA was a pitiful song.. and it did raise the spirits of the older peeps...
but another song that has to placed in the top ten most embarrassing is
CONVOY.. by C.W. McCall
WHAT A HIDIOUS TUNE....
Rhelawen 1-29-04, 12:36 PM My parents have always listened to country music, most especially Don Williams (whom I also like). I've never been embarassed by their choice in music. :)
djdaffy1227 1-29-04, 12:43 PM My parents never really listened to music while we were growing up. I do remember loving "Elvira" when it came out (I still love it now) It was huge on the pop charts as well. I never got into country music until I started to play at a country bar. The people were very friendly and the women were gorgeous and friendly, not like the Night Clubs I used to hang out at, where if you didn't have money and a big car the women wouldn't talk to you.
My parents NEVER listened to country when I was growing up. My dad always listened to classic rock & my mom was a disco queen & loved Motown.
Nowadays, she'll listen to Garth Brooks every now & then, but I don't mind. I kinda like his music. :)
