View Full Version : All these new albums but no videos?
Sal Collaziano 11-11-00, 06:06 AM Hey all. I see so many 80s bands with new records.. Are there any with new videos? Is MTV and VH1 really being that impossible? Or do the bands feel to old to make the videos? Hey, wait a sec. They're not old at all. What the heck is the problem? If you've seen a video, or even heard of one, reply here... Thanks ya!

Hey. I watch VH-1 and MTV a lot. VH-1 I've seen play U2's Beautiful Day video a lot and Bon Jovi's Thank You For Loving Me, but MTV never does. I checked both networks' video playlists in Billboard magazine the last couple of weeks, and while both those are high on VH-1's list, they're not even on MTV's lists period. MTV did play Bon Jovi's It's My Life quite a bit, and both networks played the hell out of Madonna's strip joint limo video Music.
Some 80's bands that released albums recently that I never saw videos for were the Eurythmics, Poison, Taylor Dayne(and she defintely did new videos which were briefly shown in interviews), Pat Benatar had a new video from her 1997 album which got played all of 1 time that I know of around 4 am, and Bryan Adams has had a string of hits with cool new videos over in Europe the last few years which never saw the light of day in the US, except for the On A Day Like Today video from 1998, which Vh-1 did a Pop Up Video for.
I like Vh-1, but MTV really pisses me off. They have so much non music programming now. That show Undressed is pure trash, and while I like the show The Real World, can someone please explain to me what it has to do with music? And then there's that clamation boxing program they have.....AHHHHHHH!!!!!!.
Is it just me, or is MTV obsessed with Britney Spears?

Sal Collaziano 1-10-01, 03:50 PM MTV is just another station with a bunch of wierd crap on it. VH1 is okay. I hear Much Music (up in Canada) is pretty good.. Why can't there be a BET (black entertainment network) for 80s music!? EET. Eighties Entertainment Network... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Roemello 1-10-01, 04:05 PM I see that brain swirling again! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif If you could ever get something like that going, my mouth would drop to the floor http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
I'll be a VJ for ya http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif
I agree with the MTV sentiments....they really do suck as a music video station. Then when they do play videos, it's usually crap anyways! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

Sal Collaziano 1-11-01, 07:12 PM Hah, TJ! Thanks. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif And yes, Roem.. The BRAIN is SWIRLING again! TEETS. The Eighties Entertainment Television System. hehe But realistically, EEN (Eighties Entertainment Network) would be a great thing. If newtoothbrush ever lives to it's potential, this could happen.. Actually, I'm going to post a message about what I should do with newtoothbrush. Otherwise, if you have any ideas of how we could somehow start our own network... Lemme know! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

Amy Livin 1-11-01, 11:13 PM Other than Bon Jovi's It's My Life, Say It Isn't So and Thank You For Loving Me I can't really say that there are many videos out there. There was Def Leppard's Promises a while back and I heard on the radio that Aerosmith will have a new video comming out pretty soon (within the month) I can't remember the tittle though.

Sal Collaziano 1-12-01, 01:01 PM I like that song "Promises". It sounds just like old Def Leppard stuff. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Where the heck is Pamster, anyway?

Amy Livin 1-12-01, 08:14 PM I loved that song, it's great. Too bad it didn't get the popularity it derseved. Pamster would have been real jealous of BlueOmega, he was an "undercover bouncer" at one of their concerts, he actualy got payed to see them! It pissed me off cause he didn't even know who they were. I wanted to go!!!

Sal Collaziano 1-13-01, 04:15 PM Wow. He didn't know who they were? Has he been sheltered or something? hehe Well, he's pretty lucky to have been there and get paid for it. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Cool.. Did he atleast enjoy the show?

SurlyOne 1-19-01, 06:28 PM Videos are too expensive to make these days. Since MTV's playlist is so restricted, most labels won't fund the making of a video (which usually gets charged back to the artist anyway) unless there is some real radio action happening on the single. MTV doesn't even run "120 Minutes" anymore! It just isn't worth the expense to make a video that only has a 2% chance of ever getting played! The bands generally don't want to go through the expense if it's just going to end up leaving them in the red.
Having a song break is another story - a handful of corporations own most of the radio stations; usually a few in each market. Since stations are really only competing with other stations owned by the same corporations, their playlists are extremely conservative. They live and die by their market research, and even though many of us complain about the lousy music on the radio, market research is telling them that this is what people want to hear! The labels are releasing many albums each year in a variety of genres, but radio stations are so rigid about their "formats" that it is impossible to get a new artist played unless a label spends millions on it. Music is cyclical - teen pop is slowly beginning to erode, so expect a newer musical revoulution soon. Who knows? With 80's fashion coming back, perhaps we will see 80's influenced music rise as well. But if a radio station ever calls to get your opinions, make sure you tell them what you really think!
It's the same with MTV - even though most people I know hate what MTV has become, their research tells them that the demographic they are chasing likes the channel the way it is. Scary...
Amy Livin 1-22-01, 05:30 AM Sal, he didn't get to see much of the show, all he said was that the music was too loud.

Sal Collaziano 1-22-01, 03:03 PM Oh, not his kinda think then, Amy.. That's okay, though.. As for SurlyOne - you're making a lot of sense.. About the videos for sure. And the radio? That sounds right too. Terrible.. Well, hopefully a new trend will take place soon.. That's all we can hope for! If there's every a survey, hopefully we can get almost all 600 members here to respond..

twiceremoved 2-06-01, 07:45 AM hi. i just wanted to reply to this, because i'm canadian, so i know what much is like. and it's good. their programming is probably 90% music videos, and i honestly can't think of a single show that's NOT music centred. much is a wee bit britney & co saturated these day, too, though. but they still playing mostly videos. muchmoremusic (the "adult contemporary station"), though, plays TONS of great 80's videos. i'm not too sure about current ones, but i know they play a lot of old ones. they have shows, like "retro boogie dance party", and "backtrax", which play entirely old videos, and they'll do 80's, and 70's, etc. a couple of nights ago they played an entire new order concert http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif it's good.
Sal Collaziano 2-07-01, 03:08 PM This is the one reason I will get satellite TV one of these days.. I really want to see these stations in Canada! Thanks for the info!

I would like to see one day of the week (i.e. Wednesday 80's Retreat) devoted to nothing but 80's music videos, interviews with 80's artists, and introductions of new songs and music videos by 80's artists.
Any takers? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
BTW...Check this link out for pictures from last saturdays concert in Tampa for lack of a better place to post them. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//confused.gif

Sal Collaziano 2-16-01, 07:38 PM That's an awesome idea, Sarg.. Maybe we should start a petition and send it to VH1 with a bunch of signatures... Does anyone think that would work? I will post a new message about it...

RetroMan 2-21-01, 09:54 AM When Robert Smith from the Cure was in Australia late last year for the last tour, he was asked why no videos where made for Blood Flowers and he said that they made some for their last album, but no-one played them!? so this time they didn't bother! it is such a pity, and it's becoming the trend these days - how can anyone forget their timeless videos for 'Lullaby' and that wardrobe that falls off the cliff into the sea for 'Close To Me' man! things will never be the same

Sal Collaziano 2-22-01, 08:05 PM If we could get one day per week on MTV or VH1 to play 80s videos, this wouldn't be the case. Let's think about how we can get this petition going. New artists (as well as old) could and would start making new videos..
