View Full Version : MTV IN THE 80'S aka:when they used to show videos..
Nikki_91 4-27-00, 03:19 AM When Downtown Julie Brown was like, cool..and the first MTV gameshow came on (Remote Control) and introduced us to an unknown Adam Sandler. Those were the days...oh yeah, and they actually used to show us those things called music videos. What's everyone's absolute favorite video or at least one you remember watching over and over and not get tired of?
------------------
RetroMan 4-27-00, 02:24 PM I sure know what you mean!! 80's music videos
and MTV had a 'magic' about it that seems to have been sadly lost though the years http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif
who needed a multi-million production music video back then?? most of them where done on a budget of what ever money the band members could scrounge together, resulting in a video far more entertaining and creative than what they come up with today!
------------------
RetroMan 4-27-00, 02:33 PM Oh, I forgot to answer your question - My absolute, all time favorite 80's film clip just has to be Take On Me by AHA - what a masterpiece - The most creative work of 'art' ever seen in a music video from start to finish! - it surely got a workout on my VCR!
------------------
Sal Collaziano 4-28-00, 02:27 AM Well, since I never really got to see many MTV videos - it's hard to say.
The problem is I never thought it would END! I mean, really!! How could it just END like it did?!
Well, the fact is, it did. And you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone.. So, the only videos I really remember watching alot of are.. hehe We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister.
Otherwise, I vaguely remember Take On Me, though I do remember it being a very cool video. I also remember, vaguely, Hungry Like the Wolf, Sucker for Love and some Huey Lewis and the news videos. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif During the whole glamrock era, I was too busy being jealous to notice how cool they were! bah hehe
Glad to see you made it, RetroMan! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif Welcome...

Roemello 4-28-00, 03:20 AM Take on Me was actually the video that kick started my re-finding of the 80's a couple years ago. I found the video while cleaning, watched it, loved it, mixed an 80's compilation...yada, yada, yada...and here I am!
Another cool video I remember was Land of Confusion by Genesis.

Blaziegirl 4-28-00, 03:45 AM There were just too damn many of them to pick just one! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/tongue.gif The one that seems to stand out right now is "Without You" by the Crue http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sal Collaziano 4-28-00, 11:28 AM Damn. I don't remember that Crue video. I missed that and all the other ones from the late 80s, etc.. I could really use a few headbangers ball videos..

RetroMan 4-29-00, 12:22 AM One the other hand, the WEIRDEST clip I have ever seen is Video Killed The Radio Star -
incidently the first music video ever shown on MTV!
I still can't work out the concept of the freaky looking girl who gets sucked up that big plastic tube?!? oh another clip was Fade To Grey by Visage - that used to terrify me!!! - the way Steve Strange inwraps the huge bandage from around his head!?!?!?that kind of thing was really disturbing for a little boy (as I was)
------------------
I remember all these videos!!! Land of Confusion was the video with the puppets from DC Follies right?
Now as far as my favorites, it all depends on my moods!
If i just want "eye candy" LOL then I would have to pick Crying Over You from Platinum Blonde (remember I was totally infatuated with Mark Holmes back then, the hair, the clothes, his butt LMAO) and probably any Bon Jovi video (was a toss up between Jon and Richie for me !!)
Now if I choose a video that made me say "Very Cool" it would be Cry by Godley and Creme.
Sorry to ramble......gotta go watch an eye candy video now LMAO

Sal Collaziano 4-29-00, 03:28 AM I'm jealous of all of your brains! I don't remember half the things you's do. Geez.

Roemello 4-29-00, 03:48 AM Well, my memory is aided by the fact that my mother had the wonderful idea to record two 6 hour tapes worth of music videos off of MTV in the 80's http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif Kind of preserves the memory of a once great station turned horid. I took those video tapes the second I found 'em http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
And yes, Land of Confusion was the video with the funky puppets http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif Another one that comes to mind is Thriller...who could forget those funky eyes at the end http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif

Gunner Girl 5-01-00, 11:54 AM My fave video was Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home". They held the most-requested spot forever & set a new record. MTV eventually had to stop taking votes for it & officially retire the video from "Dial MTV" so that other vids could have a chance.
Other faves; anything by Poison, Lita Ford, or Ratt.
------------------
Gunner Girl 5-01-00, 11:57 AM I just remembered, those David Lee Roth vids! They are all some of the funniest videos ever made!!
Yankee Rose - "Can you help me? My doctor says I have to take a laxative!"
"Not in my store you don't!"
Just a Gigalo(sp?) - no description needed!!
------------------
helpmeronda 5-01-00, 01:08 PM I totally agree! I won't even let my kids watch MTV anymore because of all the "spring break" parties, and crap they show! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif Do they ever show videos anymore? One of y favorite was Aha - "Take on me". I love that one!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif
------------------
Nikki_91 5-02-00, 01:43 AM I love that video "Take on Me" . Oh another one I used to love was "Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant.

Check ya later-I'm outta here!*Nikki*
Sal Collaziano 5-02-00, 02:14 AM Didn't David Lee Roth start that whole Assless Pants thing? hehe I just saw something on VH1 that had him swinging on some rope with his ass cheeks out. bah

Roemello 5-02-00, 03:58 AM blech! Pauly Shore wore those things in "Son-in-Law" Cheek chillers I believe he called 'em...lol.

RetroMan 5-02-00, 10:55 AM those things were a bit of a fad with the heavy metal scene there for a while. Blackie Lawless from WASP wore them on stage with his saw blades - Alice Cooper had some, but it looked like he made them himself with a pair of sissors - I also have an early photo of Nikki from the Crue in a pair! they were just all the rage http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/cool.gif
------------------
Sal Collaziano 5-02-00, 11:35 AM I think this would be one of the fads that I would never do. hehe http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

------------------
I have a picture of Prince, (TAFKAP), 0(+>. Whatever you call him, in a pair of cheek chillers. Pretty Cheeky http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/tongue.gif

RetroMan 5-03-00, 01:45 PM That's it! next time I go out on stage with my band - I'm going to wear some cheek chillers! I wonder what the reaction will be?
....probably to start looking for a new band!
------------------
Blaziegirl 5-03-00, 07:58 PM I dare ya to do it! Then come here and tell us all about it lol http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Oh god maybe you shouldn't we don't want the new bands to pick up on it and start showing off they're ugly @$$ES!

videophiliac 5-10-00, 10:16 PM Hello Retro Lovers:
Here are some titles I consider to be "must-haves" in an MTV collection. See if you remember these! Planet P - "Why Me?" from 1983/Missing Persons - "Mental Hopscotch" from 1982/The Romantics - "One In A Million" from 1984(if only my school years had been like this!)/Henry Lee Summer's "I Wish I Had A Girl" from 1988(there need to be more women with the character of the one Henry ended up with at the end of this video)/Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" from 1983(the only time I ever agreed with the award givers)/Cutting Crew's "One For The Mockingbird" from 1987(so many images slam at you so rapidly!)/Lou Reed's "No Money Down" from 1986(demented face-ripping!)/Rob Jungklas' "Boystown" from 1986(this puts Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun" to shame)/Rush's "The Big Money" from 1985(the tempo worked well with the performance clip and helped to get me hooked on the band)/Weezer's "Buddy Holly" from 1994(I was a hardcore "Happy Days" fan and thought that this was so clever!). I regret not having MTV in the first two years when obscure bands like Chilliwack, The John Hall Band, The Shoes, Novo Combo, and Prism were being played. But I will forever cherish my tapes from 1983 on and will always enjoy looking back at the Jordache and Atari commercials. If you would like to talk 80s and/or have videos like Saga's "Catwalk," Goanna's "Solid Rock," Frozen Ghost's "Round And Round," etc., then please get in contact with me! Take care and remember: "Too much is never enough!" Roger

Sal Collaziano 5-12-00, 08:23 PM Well. Most of those I actually dont know. But I will be buying a bunch of MTV videos from DokkenFan so I'll be seeing some videos for the first time..

FrankBooth 1-22-05, 09:08 PM RIO by Duran Duran.
One of the best songs ever made. Plus its video is awesome. Very colorful and pleasing to the eye. Great song to sing in the shower :)
whistledog 1-23-05, 02:59 PM We never had MTV in Canada. Our version of it was called 'Much Music'. It launched in 1984 and to this day, still plays lots of music videos around the clock.
In the late 80's, 'Musique Plus', a french version of Much Music from Quebec was launched
In the late 90's, 'MuchMoreMusic', a VJ free 24-7 music video channel was launched which eventually created the sister stations:
Much Retro - all 80's music videos VJ free 24-7 :bouncy:
Much Loud - all punk, rock, metal, alternative ... all the time 24-7 VJ free :bouncy:
IronMaiden 1-23-05, 07:52 PM Would have to be Walk this Way by Run DMC/Aerosmith, or Yankee Rose by David Lee Roth.
